Evaluating an improved parameterization of the soil emission in L-MEB
/ J. P. Wigneron [et al.] // IEEE Trans. Geosci. Remote Sensing. - 2011. - Vol. 49, Is. 4. - P. 1177-1189, DOI 10.1109/TGRS.2010.2075935. - Cited References: 26 . - ISSN 0196-2892
Аннотация: In the forward model [L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB)] used in the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity level-2 retrieval algorithm, modeling of the roughness effects is based on a simple semiempirical approach using three main "roughness" model parameters: H-R, Q(R), and N-R. In many studies, the two parameters Q(R) and N-R are set to zero. However, recent results in the literature showed that this is too approximate to accurately simulate the microwave emission of the rough soil surfaces at L-band. To investigate this, a reanalysis of the PORTOS-93 data set was carried out in this paper, considering a large range of roughness conditions. First, the results confirmed that Q(R) could be set to zero. Second, a refinement of the L-MEB soil model, considering values of N-R for both polarizations (namely, N-RV and N-RH), improved the model accuracy. Furthermore, simple calibrations relating the retrieved values of the roughness model parameters H-R and (N-RH - N-RV) to the standard deviation of the surface height were developed. This new calibration of L-MEB provided a good accuracy (better than 5 K) over a large range of soil roughness and moisture conditions of the PORTOS-93 data set. Conversely, the calibrations of the roughness effects based on the Choudhury approach, which is still widely used, provided unrealistic values of surface emissivities for medium or large roughness conditions.

The fine magnetic microstructure of the magnetization "ripple" was studied by a numerical analysis of micromagnetic model of nanocrystalline films with a random distribution of directions of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in crystallites. Obtained results were compared with the results of theoretical studies.

Аннотация: Possibility of remote sensing of both the surface temperature and the temperature gradient in the permafrost active layer from L-band brightness temperature observations is theoretically investigated at a SMOS frequency of 1.4 GHz. Bare soil emission is simulated based on the semi-empirical L-MEB model. The brightness temperature is simulated using the soil density, surface roughness, temperature, and moisture profiles measured in situ at the Biosphere Station Franklin Bluffs, Alaska, USA (69°39'N, 148°43'W) from September 2, 1999, to August 23, 2001. The soil permittivity is calculated using the temperature-dependent generalized refractive mixing dielectric model for the organic rich soil sample collected in North Slope, Alaska (68°38'N, 149°35'W). This model predicts the complex dielectric constant of moist soil both thawed and frozen at temperatures from-30°C to +25°C and moistures from 0 to 0.94 g/g. The brightness temperatures simulated for field-of-view angles from 0 to 60\circ are inverted into the temperature profiles, and their deviations from the temperature profiles measured in situ are estimated. The error in reconstructing temperature profiles is found to be no greater than 1.8 °C to depths of 0.15 m. © 2013 IEEE.

Аннотация: Quantum chemical modeling of the electronic structure and evaluation of the total energy of several biological molecules important for the ecology have been carried out. The first example is represented by pheromone molecules of the gypsy moth and the Siberian silk moth and their responses to substances present in the forest and to electromagnetic radiation. The second example is concerned with the molecular mechanism of bioluminescence. Here we report the quantum chemical modeling of the excited states of coelenteramide embedded in the active site of the protein. We demonstrate that the fluorescence wavelength extremely depends on the proton position between coelenteramide and histidine.

Аннотация: Предлагается обзор современных представлений о влиянии температуры на диэлектрическую проницаемость влажных почв и простая диэлектрическая модель почвы, учитывающая температурную зависимость.
The dielectric constant of soils depends on the frequency of the electromagnetic field, moisture, temperature and type of soil. Temperature affects the dielectric constant of unfrozen soil less, so the studies, both experimental and theoretical, on this subject are much less. An overview of modern views on the effect of temperature on the dielectric constant of wet soil and a simple dielectric model of soil, taking into account the temperature dependence are provided

Аннотация: The studies were designed to ensure correct inclusion of profiles into our model. These promising results will be followed by a validation stage. To do that, we have experimental data sets. We have moisture measurements (with the presence of gradients) and emissivities from the site of SMOSREX (nearly no temperature gradients). On the other hand, we have measurements of high temperature gradients, moisture, emissivity and bi static scattering coefficients from a measurement site in Siberia [8].

Аннотация: A generalized method of conditional moments for computation of effective elastic constants of anisotropic rocks with spatially oriented microcracks is considered. The method involves an additional operation of averaging of known solution data for a modeled rock of orthorhombic structure with ellipsoidal microcracks whose semiaxes are oriented along the coordinate axes. The averaging is performed using the distribution function of rock microcrack orientations, which is expanded into a series in terms of generalized spherical functions. The expansion coefficients are determined by an experiment. In calculating the effective elastic constants of anisotropic rocks, there are no constraints on the concentration of microcracks. We have studied the parameters of azimuthal anisotropy of elastic-wave velocities in modeled amphibolites with ellipsoidal hornblende grains oriented along the coordinate axes and with three-planar and spatially oriented systems of microcracks. The obtained results agree with experimental data of ultrasonic determinations of elastic constants for amphibolite samples.

The role of rocks saturated with metallic iron in the formation of ferric carbonate-silicate melts: experimental modeling under PT-conditions of lithospheric mantle

Аннотация: Experimental modeling of the processes of formation of ferric carbonate-silicate melts through the carbonate-oxide-metal interaction is performed in the (Mg,Ca)CO3-SiO2-Al2O3-Fe0 system at 6.3 and 7.5 GPa and within 1150-1650 °C, using a multianvil high-pressure apparatus of “split-sphere” type (BARS). Two parallel reactions run in the subsolidus region (1150-1450 °C): decarbonation, producing pyrope-almandine (Fe# = 0.40-0.75) and CO2 fluid, and redox interaction between carbonate and Fe0, resulting in the crystallization of iron carbide in assemblage with magnesiowustite (Fe# = 0.75-0.85). It is shown that the reduction of carbonate or CO2 fluid by iron carbide and parallel redox interaction of magnesiowustite with CO2 produce graphite in assemblage with Fe3 + -containing magnesiowustite. In the temperature range of 1450-1650 °C, generation of carbonate-silicate melts coexisting with pyrope-almandine, magnesiowustite, magnetite, ferrospinel, and graphite takes place. The composition of the produced melts is as follows: SiO2 - 10-15 wt.%, X(FeO + Fe2O3) = 36-43 wt.%, and Fe3+/XFe - 0.18-0.23. These Fe3 + -enriched carbonate-silicate melts/fluids are saturated with carbon and are the medium of graphite crystallization. Oxide and silicate phases (almandine, ferrospinel, and magnetite) coexisting with graphite are also characterized by high Fe3+/XFe values. It has been established that Fe3 + -enriched carbonate-silicate melts can result from the interaction of Fe0-containing rocks with carbonated rocks. In the reduced mantle (with the presence of iron carbides or oxides), melts of this composition can be the source of carbon and the medium of graphite crystallization at once. After separation and ascent, these ferric carbonate-silicate melts can favor oxidizing metasomatism in the lithospheric mantle.

Аннотация: A process of lithium atoms penetration into silicon (1 0 0) subsurface layers was investigated with the help of DFT method. It was shown that, while the concentration of lithium adatoms on reconstructed (1 0 0) silicon surface is low, the bonding energy of lithium atoms in the subsurface layers is smaller than the bonding energy on the surface, so lithium atoms are unlikely to migrate into the crystal. When the (1 0 0) silicon surface is covered by 2 layers of lithium, migration into the subsurface layer becomes favorable. In addition to this, the reconstruction of the surface changes to the form with symmetric dimers as the concentration increases. Thus, all possible lithium migration paths become energy-wise equal, so the rate of lithium atom transfer into silicon crystal rises. In addition to the ab initio calculations, an ad-hoc empirical interatomic potential was developed and the kinetics of lithium diffusion into silicon were studied. It was shown that lithium penetration proceeds in a layer-by-layer way with a sharp border between undoped and lithiated silicon. This is accounted for the fact that, once a tetrahedral interstice is occupied by a lithium atom, the migration barriers between the adjacent interstices become lower and the rate of diffusion increases. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Аннотация: In this theoretical paper, we propose method for the measurement of temperature profile in the topsoil of Arctic tundra using observations of brightness temperature at frequencies of 1.4, 6.93, 7.3 and 10.7 GHz. A multi-frequency physical model of microwave emission of bare soil and dielectric model of Arctic tundra soil, with temperature profiles, which were measured in the active topsoil with using Toolik climate station on the North Slope of Alaska, were used to calculate "measured" values of brightness temperature. In the approximation of piecewise linear profile of soil temperature, from the 'measured' values of brightness temperature were retrieved temperature profiles and were compared with ones, which were measured at the Toolik station from 2010 to 2011. The retrieved values of soil temperatures at the depth of 0.6cm and 16.0cm deviated from measured ones by 1.3°C and 3.2°C in terms of root-mean-square error, and by 0.92 and 0.62 in terms of determination coefficient, respectively. © 2015 IEEE.

Перевод заглавия: Температурно зависимая диэлектрическая модель на частоте 1,4 ГГц для талой и мерзлой сельскохозяйственной почвы
Аннотация: A mono-frequency dielectric model for the agricultural soil both thawed and frozen has been developed. The model is based on the soil dielectric measurements carried out in the ranges of volumetric moisture from 0,03 to 0,51 cm3/ cm3, dry soil density from 1.12 to 1.64 g/cm3, and temperature from -30 to 25°C (heating run), at the frequency of 1.4 GHz used in the SMOS mission. To fit the results of measurements of the soil complex refractive index (CRI) as a function of soil moisture, the refractive mixing model was applied. As a result, the parameters of the refractive mixing model linked to soil solids, as well as the bound, transient, and free soil water components were derived as a function of temperature. The error of the proposed dielectric model was shown to be in the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. © 2015 IEEE.

Аннотация: The dielectric model for an arctic soil both thawed and frozen has been developed. The model is based on the soil dielectric measurements carried out in the ranges of gravimetric moisture from 0.01 to 0.43 g/g, dry soil density from 1.25 to 1.83 g/cm3, and temperature from 25 to -30°C (cooling run), in the frequency range 0.05-15 GHz. To fit the results of measurements of the soil complex dielectric constant as a function of soil moisture and wave frequency, the refractive mixing dielectric model in conjunction with the Debye multi-relaxation equations were applied. As a result, the spectroscopic parameters of dielectric relaxations for the bound, transient bound, and unbound soil water components were derived, being further complimented with the thermodynamics parameters to ensure a complete set of parameters of the temperature dependent multi-relaxation spectroscopic dielectric model for moist soils proposed. To calculate complex dielectric constant of soil, the following input variables have to be assigned: 1) density of dry soil, 2) gravimetric moisture, 3) wave frequency, and 4) temperature. The error of the dielectric model was evaluated in terms of RMSE, yielding the values RMSE of 0.53 and 0.43 for the soil dielectric constant and loss factor, respectively. These values appeared to be in the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. The dielectric model suggested can be applied in the active and passive remote sensing techniques in microwave to develop algorithms for retrieving soil moisture and freeze/thaw state of the topsoil in the Arctic regions. © 2015 IEEE.

Аннотация: A single-frequency dielectric model for thawed and frozen Arctic organic-rich (80%-90% organic matter) soil was developed. The model is based on soil dielectric data that were measured over the ranges of volumetric moisture from 0.007 to 0.573 cm3/cm3, dry soil density from 0.564 to 0.666 g/cm3, and temperature from 25°C to -30°C (cooling run), at the frequency of 1.4 GHz. The refractive mixing model was applied to fit the measurements of the soil's complex refractive index (CRI) as a function of soil moisture, with the values of temperature being fixed. Using the results of this fitting, the parameters of the refractive mixing model were derived as a function of temperature. These parameters involve the CRIs of soil solids as well as bound, transient, and free soil water components. The error of the dielectric model was evaluated by correlating the predicted complex relative permittivity (CRP) values of the soil samples with the measured ones. The coefficient of determination (R2) and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) were estimated to be R2 = 0.999, RMSE = 0.27 and R2 = 0.993, RMSE = 0.18 for the real and imaginary parts of the CRP, respectively. These values are in the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. The proposed dielectric model can be applied in active and passive remote-sensing techniques used in the areas with organicrich soil covers, mainly for the SMOS, SMAP, and Aquarius missions.

Аннотация: Using the exactly solvable model known in statistical physics as the infinite-range interaction model (the van der Waals model), we obtain expressions for the hierarchy of multispin multiquantum time correlation functions for a solid-state paramagnetic nuclear spin system with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between nuclei. These functions are observed experimentally using contemporary multiquantum NMR spectroscopy methods. We write the complete set of orthogonal multispin operators explicitly and find the time dependence for amplitudes of multiparticle time correlation functions. The proposed model describes the behavior of multiparticle correlation functions well, at least for not very large numbers n of expansion harmonics. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental data obtained for hexamethylbenzol.
