balsam fir -- properties -- characteristics -- growth

Аннотация: Balsam fir, a small to medium-sized coniferous tree, is one of the most symmetrical and beautiful spesies of our northern forests. The wood is light in weight and color, limber, soft, and low in decay resistance. It has good pulping properties and is used principally in the manufacture of pulp. Balsam fir is also widely used for interior knotty panelling, fish box construction, crates, cooperage, millwork, and similar products not requiring high structural strength.

Аннотация: A study of the response of 40- to 50-year-old balsam fir to four levels of crown release, 1 to 3,3 to 5,5 to 7 feet, and a control, was carried out at Green River, New Brunswick, between 1953 and 1958. The treatment led to increased basal area growth, but the degree of release had relatively little influence on the rate. The relationship of increment to various intrinsic and extrinsic factors was examined and basal area increment was found to be related to initial breast height diameter, crown width and a derived competition factor, but much variation is unexplained. An equation for predicting basal area growth is presented and a discussion of the possible factors contributing to the unexplained variation is given.

Аннотация: Solar radiation was measured during three months in the summer of 1961 by means of Bellani pyranometers below the canopy of three balsam fir stands, one unthinned and two recently thinned, in Quebec. Observations were made at three randomly selected stations representing average values at each plot. Radiation available below canopy was related to physical dimensions of stands. The average solar radiation beneath fir canopies showed values of 6,8, and 10 per cent of that in the open for stands of 7,600, 5,900, and 4,489 inches of stem density, respectively. Variations in the amount of solar radiation in the open did not change the average percentage of open radiation in the stands. However, with increasing amounts of radiation in the open the scatter of values around the mean percentage of open radiation decreased. It was estimated that thinnings that removed 12 and 36 per cent of the original stand basal area had the immediate effect of increasing the radiation intensity by 25 and 50 per cent.

Аннотация: The concept of stand density is fundamental in forestry. Investigations of problems of mensuration, growth and yield, and silviculture need to consider density as one of the main stand variables. Several methods of expressing density were defined and discussed in an earlier study (Vezina 1963a). This paper discusses the results obtained in testing some common methods of expressing stand density in relation to crown closure of both balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.). stands in Quebec. A more general objective was to discuss the development of the stand density concept: how it developed in the past and how one may expect it to develop in the future.

Аннотация: Some relationships between crown size and stem diameter at breast height having application in silviculture, aerial inventories of forest resources and fire protection, were determined from 48 red spruce and 80 balsam fir growing together in the same stands. For trees of the same d.b.h., spruce crowns vary in width and average slightly wider than fir crowns, lengths are similar for both species, but spruce crowns are much heavier. All relationships examined were highly significant for both species but the strongest correlation was between d.b.h. and crown weight.

Аннотация: A study was made of the actual rates and distribution patterns of aerially applied urea fetilizer using norminal rates of 50 and 100 lb./ac. nitrogen. It was concluded that: 1. The variation in distribution at the 50 lb./ac. N rate was great enough to render such application unsuitable. 2. The amount of fertilizer monitored falling through the tree canopy (jack pine, Pinus banksiana Lamb.) was similar to that monitored in open strips. 3. At nominal rates of 100 lb./ac. N, monitoring catchers of 1 square foot area were as suitable as those of 2 square feet area. 4. The estimated numbers of monitoring catchers needed to measure urea fertilizer at 100 lb./ac. N rate was determined for various assumed levels of accuracy. 5. It was suggested that narrow rectangular monitoring plots using 10 catchers each be used to determine fertilizer distribution and tree growth plot locations. 6. Growth responses to fertilizer treatments are more realistic when related to both a response curve and the area distribution of fertilizer. A system of monitoring catchers and plots is recommended which will enable this to be accomplished. 7. The use of cacodylic acid to kill trees in lines, so that the dead red brown foliage would provide marker lines for the aircraft feasible. It should be noted that although jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) retain their dead foliage for a year or more, the foliage of spruces Picea falls after the tree's death.

area -- regeneration after fire -- mature stands

Аннотация: In August 1940 a 16-square-mile area on the Little Pabos River limits of the Gaspesia Pulp and Paper Company was burned over. The fire ran through recently cut-over areas, some 10- to 20-year-old stands, and some mature stands. 20 years later the burn was obviously restocking so slowly that production in the area would be greatly reduced for at least one rotation. The study of forest development after the 1940 Little Pabos fire is the subject of this paper. Stocking, distribution, growth, age and the establishment of balsam fir, spruce, and white birch after fire are described and discussed
