Аннотация: The young growth of black walnut was investigated in six 8-32-year-old stands on the Rhine plain. Until up to the age of 10 years the number of plants decreases dramatically (up to 80%). There is a clear relationship between the number of stems and the diameter. Up to an age of 8 years the average height increment is about 1 m, up to an age of 32 years this decreases to 0.75 m. Compared to seed, set plants are retarded in their height development during the seedling stage. Self pruning was not greatly stimulated by a lower-story of beech and maple. Cleaning and thinning of black walnut should be carried out earlier than by English oak. Only then can the crown of black walnut be provided with sufficient space at all ages.
