Аннотация: Effects of Acid Rain on Forest Processes investigates the influence of acidification on forest soil, rhizosphere, and plant life, and on the processes linking them. The Solling Project, which ran from 1966 to 1973 in Europe, was a pioneering study on forest ecosystems. Because European forests have suffered the effects of acid rain years ahead of hose in North America, this book will provide a valuable glimpse of what may lie ahead in North America. This book reflects the more recent developments in investigations of the consequences of acid deposition. It has become increasingly clear that the major influence of acid deposition is indirect, i.e. the effects are mediated by changes in soil chemistry that influence all other processes. The chapters have been written by experts in their fields, and the text represents a balance of their research with a comprehensive review of the literature.This volume will be of particular interest to environmental scientists, ecologists, forest and soil scientists, agronomists, and microbiologists

Аннотация: This book gives a final eveluation of a multidisciplinary study on air pollution at a Norway spruce stand in North Germany and on the interactions of atmospheric constituents with the forest ecosystem. Some of the special features of this research work are the application of advanced trace analysis thechniques, the use of improved methods for quantifying extensively the dry deposition, the determination of element and gas fluxes including their balances as well as the assessment of the responses of the forest ecosystem. Comprehensive data are presented on the nutrient and carbon dioxide budget. Other subjects refer to the seasonal variations and the long-term trends of air pollution.

The book examins the current status of water chemistry and characterizes the processes controlling water chemistry on a regional bases by using and comparing high-quality data sets. Methods for assessing long-term changes in water chemistry and their effects on fish and other biota are critically evaluated. The book demonstrates the substatial diversity among geographical regions with respect to the nature of surface waters and the complexity of their response to acidic deposition. Аннотация: The USDA Forest Service along with various cooperators has initiated Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) in New England to assess the condition and stressors of region's forests, to analyze changes in these data over time, and to identify any relationships between forest condition and stressors. A major component of FHM in New England is 263 permanent plots located across the region on which growth efficiency, foliar condition and nutrition, soil nutrition, and landscape characteristics will be measured and reported annually. This publication describes the forest resources of New England and discusses major influences-insects and pathogens, climate and weather, and atmospheric deposition and pollution.

Аннотация: This book presents a summary and synthesis of two decades of research on biogeochemical cycling and related processes in Walker Branch Watershed, a mixed deciduous watershed near Oak, Ridge,Tennessee, which is one of only a few long-term, intensive ecosystem studies in the United Ststes aimed at the quantification of land-water interactions in a forested landscape.The book pulls together for the first time results from this study in the areas of forest meteorology, atmospheric deposition, hydrology, carbon dynamics and productivity, terrestrial nutrient cycling, stream chemistry and ecology, and mathematical modelling.The data sets obtained allow extrapolation to eastern deciduous forests in general and provide scientists and environmental managers with baselines against which future changes in forest ecosystem composition and behavior may be assessed. Researchers and professionals in environmental sciences will be interested how these results compare and contrast with those of other major watershed studies.

Аннотация: A new dynamic weighing lysimeter is described. Digital values of evapotranspiration, condensation or wet fog deposition are summed up during 1-2 minutes and are recorded automatically. The evapotranspiration from lichens and heather vegetation measured by means of the lysimeter and that calculated by the Bowen ratio energy balance method are compared. Some errors in evaluation of evapotranspiration by means of both methods are discussed.

Аннотация: IThe results indicated that the stability of atmospheric N retained in the soil increases with soil depth. Atmospheric ammonium retained in the most upper mineral soil layer is more stable than atmospheric nitrate under ambient atmospheric N deposition. Long-term reduced atmospheric N deposition increases mainly the stability of atmospheric nitrate retained in the most upper mineral soil layer.
