Аннотация: The volume deals with exergonic reactions of the cell are coupled to the esterification of phosphate so that the free energy change of the reaction is not liberated as heat but is rather stored in the new phosphate bond. This phosphate may now be transferred to ADP to form ATP. The phosphate of ATP may be transferred to any of a large number of acceptor molecules. The acceptor molecule, in its phosphorylated form can now enter into the synthetic (endergonic) reactions of the cell. Thus, the free energy change of the exergonic reaction has been coupled to endergonic reaction systems through the intermediary of the adenosine nucleotides. From a stochastic point of view this system provides the organism with an ingenious linkage of the synthetic energy using reactions to the respiratory energy-making reactions. The rate of the respiratory reaction is determined by the rate of the synthetic reactions.
