Аннотация: Test were prepared with four types of adhesives similar to those used in industry for the fabrication of structural glued-laminated timber. Strength tests were made on these adhasives in glueline thicknesses ranging from 0.001 to 0.051 inch in increments of 0.005 inch. The strength of all the adhesives generally decreases with an increase of glueline thickness and casein glue was found to possess very poor gap-filling properties. The effects of long-term aging on adhesives in thick gluelines is under study

Аннотация: Beginning with a review on the biochemical strategies of synthesis and degradation of plant cell walls, with special emphasis in theire nature as wood composites, the following aspects of production of wood composites are presented: the possibilities of using tannins as adhesives; the use of potato pulp as matrix component and binder for wood composites; the mycological treatment of wood chips as a method for saving energy for the defibration for making wood fibres and reducing the demand for binders during the subsequent production of fiberboards; the use of white-rot fungi fro the decontamination of wood which contains organic wood preservatives as a way for the recycling of otherwise unrecyclable wood; the enzymatic activation of the lignin from wood fibres for the production of wood composites which are completely free from adhesives
