Аннотация: This book provides a series of case studies showing how the ecological effects of afforestation can be examined using a variety of methods and approaches from a number of academic disciplines, and describing the effects of different forms of plantation management. Case studies are drawn from the UK, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Belgium. The book will interest students, researchers, and practitioners in a number of disciplines: ecology, forestry, geography, environmental science and conservation

Аннотация: Huge areas of the Russian forests suffer from insufficient forest management. A scenario has been developed for an improved management program that would be implemented over the next 40 years. Possible options have been aggregated into three interlinked groups: increase in forest productivity, decrease of carbon by mitigation of disturbance regimes, and improvement of landscape management. In this report a simple model is described to illustrate the following possibilities foe increased carbon fixation by improved forest management: largescale of reforestation and afforestation, replacement of stands with low productivity and replacement the so called soft deciduous species and "climax" stands, and implementation of rational silviculture (thinning). The results indicate a potential for an increase in carbon fixation in Russian forest ecosystems of 24.4 Pg over 100 years, after the first year that the actions discussed are impleneted. The net sink of carbon was determined to be 16.5 Pg in the low estimate and 42.5 Pg in the high estimate. There is great potential for economically justified increased carbon fixation through improved forest management in Russia.

Аннотация: The book provides theoretical and practical guidelines to use and enhance the potential of forests to absorb carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel resources. To understand the interactions linked with such concepts, the book addresses the folowing topics: forest dynamics and carbon budget: deforestation and afforestation; emerging programs for sustainable development; timber as substitute for high energy materials and fossil fuels; forest responses to climate cxhange and socioeconomic pressures; policy aspects. Apart from the production of timber, forests fulfill numerous additional ecological and social functions. This book has a strong interdisciplinary focus and integrates global aspects with regional and national studies.

afforestation -- standard method -- basic habitat -- density

Аннотация: This study was primarily intended to ascertain variations in numbers of small mammals between distinct forest types. A second aim was to elucidate general habitat variables correlated with the abundance of the various species. Finally, the abundance would be analysed in relation to management practices. It was thus intended to make a survey of relative densities of the small mammal species in various forest environments. Such a description may be of practical value to foresters wishing to avoid undue damage from these animals. Causal relations behind the distribution of the animals will be treated in other contexts.

afforestation -- arable land -- seedling -- soil preparation

Аннотация: Field experiments were carried out at four sites in Sweden to investigate the possibility of establishing downy birch and silver birch on abandoned fields by natural regeneration, direct seeding or both. The effects of six soil preparation methods on the vegetation cover, seedling survival, dominant seedling height and seedling establishment were studied up to four years after seedling emergence.Seedling survival and establishment without preparation, and with rotary cultivation, were close to nil, while the other soil preparation methods generally were more effective. Best seedling survival and establishment were obtained on seedbeds created by removing topsoil or by transposing it by deep ploughing or inversion. Application of peat litter to the seedbed promoted seedling establishment.

nutrients -- soil analysis -- afforestation -- agricultural peatland

Аннотация: Four different afforestation experiments in the same peatland area within a distance of about 1,5 km were included. Soil and needle samples were taken from 116 plots altogether. The soil samples were taken from two depths: 0-10 cm (tilled layer) and 30-40 cm. Soil samples were analyzed for total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, B, Cu, NH4-N, NO3-N, pH and AAAc extractable P, K, and Ca. For the total nutrients the results were calculated per oven dry weight (mg/kg) and per area (kg/ha), and for AAAc extractable P, K, Ca per laboratory volume (mg/I) in addition. NH4-N and NO3-N were calculated only per laboratory volume (mg/1). The bulk density and organic matter content were also determined.

Scots pine -- Norway spruce -- Silver birch -- afforestation -- peatlands -- plantations

Аннотация: For the study of the results of field afforestation in the area of the Forestry Board of Lapland, 53 fields, afforested with various species in 1973-74 and 1981-82, were inventoried. Systematic sampling emloyed 10 to 20 circle plots (20 m2 in each plantation). Sixty percent of the plantations were located on peatlands. Tilt ploughing was the most common site preparation method; chemical or mechanical grass control was used in most cases; and the state of ditches was poor.

Аннотация: Line-plot inventories were made in central Ostrobothnia, western Finland, of Scots pine and Silver birch plantations (ages 7-8 and 15-16 years) established on old fields. Soil samples (0-10 cm) were analysed for their bulk density, proportion of organic matter, pH, total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, B, Zn, Mn and ammonium acetate extractable P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe and Zn. Foliar samples were taken from the Scots pine plantations and (with the exception of iron) these were analysed for the same nutrients as was the case with soil samples.

Аннотация: The aim of the study was to investigate the genetic relationship between selected parental and offspring stands of Scots pine at the level of quantitative traits and DNA variation. At the same time? the influence of these relationships on the distribution of genetic variation and changes in the genetic diversity of the gene pool in the offspring population established by planting was analysed. Scots pine is the main forest tree species in Poland. Pine stands are regenerated mainly by artificial afforestation (planting). The results of this study are then related to processes observed during the regeneration of forests in most areasof the country and e.t.c.
