Аннотация: Resource Economics is a text for students with a background in calculus and intermediate microeconomics and a familiarity with the spreadsheet program Excel. The book covers basic concepts (Chapter 1); shows how to set up spreadsheets to solve simple dynamic allocation problems (Chapter 2); and presents economic models for fisheries, forestry, nonrenewable resources, and stock pollutants (Chapters 3–6). Chapter 7 examines the maximin utility criterion when the utility of a generation depends on consumption of a manufactured good, harvest from a renewable resource, or extraction from a nonrenewable resource. Within the text, numerical examples are posed and solved using Excel’s Solver. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter. These problems help to make concepts operational, develop economic intuition, and serve as a bridge to the study of real-world problems in resource management. Jon M. Conrad is Professor of Resource Economics in the Department of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1973 to 1977, joining the Cornell faculty in 1978. His research interests focus on the use of dynamic optimization techniques to manage natural resources and environmental quality. He has published articles in the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, Land Economics, Marine Resource Economics, Biomathematics, Ecological Economics, Natural Resource Modeling, and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, where he served as an Associate Editor. He is coauthor, with Colin Clark, of the text Natural Resource Economics: Notes and Problems (Cambridge University Press, 1987) and is past President of the Resource Modeling Association. Cambridge published the first edition of Resource Economics in 1999.

Аннотация: The static tree pulling method, strength and components of anchorage, structure and dynamics of root systems and the influence of stemreduction strategies on allocation of biomass and wind stability of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were analyzed. Concluding , that the wind stability is supported by implementing 'the lowest possible stem number in early years and the highest possible stem number in older age", a decreasing thinning intensity with increasing age (from D-Grade (very heavy thinning) to A-Grade (non-thinning) was proposed. The book describes the natural ecological basis for wind resistance of Conifers.

Аннотация: The Rio Conference achieved cosensus in more than one area: first, it secured a set of agreements between governments which marks a significant advance in international cooperation on development and environment issues. Second, it marshalled political commitment to these arrangements at the highest level and placed the issue of sustainable development at the heart of the international agenda. Third, it opened new paths for communications and cooperation between official and non-official organisations working towards developmental and environmental goals. Fourth, it led to an enormous increase in public awareness of the issues that were tackled in the process - an awareness that ought to facilitate the adoption of policies and the allocation of additional resources to fulfill the task.

Аннотация: Effects of fertilisation treatments (amounts and composition) on needle concentrations of micronutrients (boron, copper, iron, manganese and zinc), were studied in a long-term fertilisation experiment with young Norway spruce in Central Sweden. Stored current-year's needles (1967-1989), and material from a biomass sampling in 1989, were used to determine changes in micronutrient status with stand development, and to estimate total amounts of micronutrients, in all aboveground organs for a wide range of nutrient regimes and stand productivities. Fertilisation resulted in a wide range of growth rates: the most optimal treatments grew more than three times as fast as the control stands.

Аннотация: At the beginning of the investigation period the total biomass of the pine stands on the ordinary sedge pine mire was 48 tn/ha. The biomass of the mixed stands on the herbrich sedge pine mire was 91 tn/ha, out of which about 60% was from pine. The biomass of the spruce stands on the Vaccinium myrtillus spruce mire was 148 tn/ha. The average annual net increment of the stand biomass was 5.8 tn/ha in the unfertilized pine stands and 6.7 tn/ha in the NPK and micronutrient fertilized one during the six-year investigation period. The corresponding figures in the mixed stand were 7.2 tn/ha and 7.6 tn/ha The net increment of the biomass in the unfertilized spruce stand was 6.9 tn/ha and in the fertilized one 8.4 tn/ha. A considerable proportion of the net increment was lost to the ground as litter in all stands.

Аннотация: Ideally, the limited resources of a forest protection agency should be allocated to the various activities of the agency in a manner that will achieve the greatest return. However, up to now, such decisions have been based largely on intuition. Now operations research techniques offer an improved aid to dicision makers, techniques developed for other disciplines-notably defence and water resources- but surprisingly well adaptable to forestry problems.

    Plant physiological ecology

Аннотация: This book begins with the primary processes of carbon metabolism and transport, plant water relation, energy balance. After considering individuel leaves and whole plants, these physiological processes are then scaled up to the level of the canopy. Subsequent chapters discuss mineral nutrition and the ways in which plants cope with nutrient-deficient or toxic soils. The book then looks at patterns of growth and allocation, life-history traits, and interactions between plants and other organisms. Later chapters deal with traits that affect decomposition of plant material and with plant physiological ecology at the level of ecosystems and global environmental processes.
