Аннотация: The overwhelming focus in this volume of the treatise is on linear waves in homogeneous and stratified lakes on the rotating Earth. It comprises 12 chapters, starting with rotating linear shallow-water waves and demonstrating their classification into gravity and Rossby waves for homogeneous and stratified water bodies. This leads naturally to the analysis of gravity waves in unbounded, semi-bounded and bounded domains of constant depth: Kelvin, inertial and Poincaré waves, reflection of such waves at the end of a gulf and their description in sealed basins as so-called ‘inertial waves proper’. The particular application to gravity waves in circular and elliptical basins of constant depth then builds further confidence towards the treatment of barotropic and baroclinic basin wide wave dynamics affected by the rotation of the Earth. The classical analytical approach to the baroclinic motion in lakes is done using the two layer approximation. Recent observations have focused on higher order baroclinicity, a topic dealt with in two chapters. Whole lake responses are illustrated in barotropic and baroclinic wave analyses in Lake Onega and Lake Lugano, respectively, with detailed comparisons of field data. The final four chapters are then devoted to a detailed presentation of topographic Rossby waves and the generalized Chrystal equations and their identification by field observations.

The book discusses in detail various modern engineering applications, such as microchannel heat sinks, micro heat exchangers, and micro heat pipes. It covers methods that range from discrete computation to optical measurement techniques for microscale applications. The authors also present the fundamentals of nanoscale thermal phenomena in fluids. The text concludes with an entire chapter devoted to numerical examples of microscale conduction, convective heat transfer, and radiation as well as nanoscale thermal phenomena. Drawing on their hands-on experience, the authors shed light on the differences to consider while developing engineering designs related to micro- and nanoscale systems.

Аннотация: Analyses of aggregated data of the dynamics of Russian forests during the period from 1966 to 1993 have identified a rather stable development of Forested Areas (FA) and growing stock (an increase of 8% and 5%, respectively). Unforested Areas (UFA) have decreased significantly; for example, the total amount od unforested burned areas declined from 68.4 to 31.9 million ha over the period. Average growing stock by age groups increased for all main forest-forming species (excluding mature and overmature coniferous stands). Development in the growing stock in European Russia has been positive, but Asian Russia has experienced a rather sever decline. Studies of the 1983-1993 period show somewhat different results. Official data show that the total growing stock for Russia underwent aserous decline over this period. An adjistment for systematic inventory errors still show that there has been a substantial decrease in the growing stock in Asian Russia. The decline identified during this latter period cannot be explained by the harvest carried out, but is probably due to disturbances such as forest fires, pest, insects, and anthropogenic activities. From analyses, it can be concluded that the quality of the forests has been seriously impoverished in Russia during the 1966-1993 period. This impovershment is due to severe local overharvesting in regions witrh development infrastructure and to so-called creaming - namely, the harvesting of the best stands of specific species over huge areas. There are still vast areas of unexploited and unmanaged forests in Russia. In spite of serious shortcomings in Russian forest management, the stability of Russian boreal forests and their capasity for natural regeneration seem to be extremely high. Therefore, it may to be premature to speak of "disappearing Russian forests".

Аннотация: An attempt was made to raise the level of objectivity of bioindicato used to assess the quality of pine tree stands and environment. The bioindicators employed were: (1) the biometric characteristics of dominant trees (pine), (2) the developmental features of pine (vitality, self-sowing), and (3) pine ectomycorrhizae. To show the extent of threat from the pollution load, an analysis was carried out of the air monitoring data of the Forest Research Institute, considered to be the most systematic, complete and comprehensive (testing the biggest number of parameters). The general level of air pollution in the Wielkopolska National Park was established, and a comparison was made between the state of the abiotic environments of the WNP and other national parks and neighbouring forest inspectorates. Using a measuring tool known as an AS-1 conditiometer, an in vivo definition of intra-tissue changes was attempted. The fluorine deposit in the soil and plant tissues was assessed using standard chemical analyses. Studies were conducted in old-aged stands of pine in fresh coniferous forest habitats on four 1-ha observation plots delineated within the WNP boundaries as defined in 1957, and varying in their exposure to threat (3rd - 1st danger zones).

Аннотация: An important prerequisite for the scheduled promotion of the beneficial and social effects of the forests is their economic assessment. In this connection, use-value and value fulfil their specific task and have to be separated from each other. Exemplified by the recreation function of the forests possibilities for the determination of their use-value and of its combination with expenditure index figures by means of analyses of use-value and costs are outlined. In this way, not easily quantifiable effects can be made aceessible to economic analyses in compliance with our present level of knowledge.

Аннотация: The procedure is based upon X-ray fluorescence, and has been found very suitable with a largr number of samples. The results of analysis indicated that pine needles and birch leaves contain chloride in no more than negligible amounts. The highest percentages of sulphur encountered in pine needles were less than one half of the amount considered dangerous (0.5 per cent), and practically the same as those derived ealier in the vicinity of soidium sulphite pulp mill in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. Similar mean values were found for the total sulphur in pine needle samples collected from Lahti and from the central area of Rauma town locating about two kilometers to the north and north east from pulp mill

Аннотация: This study is restricted to the seed of Scots pine (Pinus silvestris and Norway spruce of which were stored 92 and 56 seedlots from different years and different places throughout Sweden.
