Аннотация: This work suggests and discusses possibilities for reductions of infection and prevention of DTR leaf-blight which may be accompished, by "classical methods of agricultural production" such as crop rotation, proper preparation of the seedbeds, suitable choice of wheat types, dressed seeds, optimal sowing and use of fungicides. For direct action against DTR leaf-blight in wheat, an early diagnosis of attack is of decisive importance to allow the best treatment with fungicides to be carried out. It is recommendable to use DTR fungicides at the very start of secondary infections (condia infections). With continuing +infection pressure, second treatments (and third treatments with mulched seeds) are necessary.

Аннотация: Field observations and objective data from "hidden-log" and other study situations, relating to attack flight behaviour of the ambrosia beetle, Trypodendron, lead to the conclusion that beetles are guided to attack by odours from logs. They indicate, also, that when searching for logs, beetles fly against the wind until they are near a source of attraction and then alight and continue their search by crawling. They suggest, furthermore, that stimuli different from those guiding beetles to logs are involved in initiation of burrowing activity. Attractiveness may differ markedly in logs similar in many other respects and may change greatly during a flight season; that of heavily attacked logs decreases while that of lightly- or non-attacked logs may remain low or increase considerably.

Аннотация: The book deals with the basis of biochemical needle analysis the predisposition of Norway spruce to the attack by a needle eating insect is quantified. The physiological bond between the sawfly and spruce is divided in three different experimental levels: (1) Synthesis of insect biomass by plant born nutrients. (2) Physiological potency of the plant to inhibit the insect metabolism by allelochemicals. (3) Physiological potency of the insect to break the plant defense.

After a certain age, trees form heartwood containing increased amounts of extractives which are also formed in injured sapwood or are exuded. Аннотация: The experimental material was put out as 2+ 1 plants in the spring of 1954. In October 1956, four plants in each plot were inoculated with snow blight, and the remaing plants sprayed with a 3% solution of lime-sulphur to protect them from attack. Аннотация: The destructive activity on wood and physiological behaviour of Polyporus betulinus have been studied. When attacking birch wood under favourable conditions P. betulinus proved able to cause a maximal weight loss of about 71%. This was also true for Polyporus marginatus which was chosen as a comparative organism. Wood moisture increased steeply during the attack, at its peak reaching more than three times the moisture at the start. P. betulinus and P. marginatus did not cause so great a weight loss on birch sapwood as the most destructive white rotters

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the various fungi which attack birch wood affect the strength of the wood to diffefering extents. It was also intended to discover whether there was a substantial loss in strength before any loss in weight could be recorded. Later the inerest was focussed on the relationships between alkali solubility, strength and weight loss.

Аннотация: Various methods of recording pine twisting rust have been discussed, and attack frequences on 75 progenies of Pinus silvestris plus trees have been noted. Mention has also been made to the possibility of resistance breeding. Acid ether extracts of annual shoots of Pinus silvestris have been examined by various bioassays. Marked differences in the inhibitor effect between extracts from different pine clones have been established. A possible connection between inhibitor content and resistance has been discussed. Reduction in inhibitor content during axial extension and inhibitors in leachates from pine shoots has been connected with Melampsora occurrence. Gel filtration combined with thin layer chromatography has been used for separating tha extract components. Among the inhibitors a number of resin acids have been identified by chemical means

Аннотация: During investigations on deterioration of wood in different situations, a great number of microfungi have been isolated at the laboratory. Most of the isolates have been assayed for cellulolytic activity and wood degradating capability. The aim of these studies was to examine which species are able to degrade wood, their type of attack and to investigate whether any correlations exist between wood degradation and cellulolytic activity on pure cellulose. The results for 160 different species are presented in a table.

Аннотация: The flight periods of bark beetles and the insect attack on pine logs, felled at intervals of 20 days from January to June, were studied by using window traps and by marking fresh entrance holes in the logs followed by autumn inspection. The periods of flight and attack had similar patterns. Blastophagus piniperda and B. minor, as well as several other bark beetle species, had relatively short periods of flight and attack, while especially Pityogenes chalcigraphus had a long flight period with less accentuated peak. Trypodendron lineatum had a flight pattern with one early and one late peak.

Аннотация: This monograph on the pine bark bug is the result of many years' reserach work in Scandinavia and other countries. The author gives a historical survey of the places of discovery of this insect, which, not so long ago, was hardly regarded as harmful in the West-European countries. The damage is done by sucking out the cell juice of young pine trees which causes deformity and destruction of the vessels. The damage done by the insect has been explained by means of experimental work and observations. This insect is only to be found on Scots pine and larch. It prefers clean, dry and warm places and likes pine cultures on light soil. The thick, shadowy, and mixed cultures are only attacked at the edges. The consequences of the appearnce of the insect depend mainly upon the size of the insect population and the age of the tree. The chances fro 6-10-year-old pines to endure an attack are very small. The necessary prophylactic measure to be taken is to plant the cultures with closer planting space. It is possible to achieve successful results in the control of this insect by fertilizing with nitrogen and also by using the insecticide lindan.

Аннотация: Seeds or fruits of 165 forestry species from nine tropical countries were investigated by x-ray radiography. The results showed that the method can be reliably used for detecting empty, filled, insect-attacked, mechanically damaged and diseased seeds or fruits. The applications of x-ray radiography in tropical forestry for cone, fruit and seed collection, seed processing, nursery practice, seed trade and plant quarantines, and for research etc. are discussed.

Аннотация: A method for assesing resistance to Lophodermium needle cast has been developed and applied for analysis of genetically dependent resistance in Scots pine. Determination of the decrease in height growth caused by the fungal attack was a satisfactory method for assessing the resistance. The relative height growth of the most susceptible progenies was reduced to about 30% of that of the most resistant progenies.

Аннотация: Attack and reproduction of bark beetles and blue staining of timber were studied. The material comprised 357 Scots pine that were felled by autumn storms at four localities in Lapland in 1982 and 1985. Two sample bolts were taken from each tree, one from the top of sawwood portion and the other from the base. Egg galleries, their percent coverage and exit holes of bark beetles were counted and the coverage of blue stain on dissection and phloem was estimated from the sample bolts.

Аннотация: The susceptibility of naturally regenerated pine seedlings and nursery-grown, planted seedlings to attack by the large pine weevil was compared in a 3 year pairwise field trial. No insecticides were used. The risk of attack and seedling mortality were calculated using a logistic model.
