Аннотация: The author discusses the role of protection of individual pine trees that are natural monuments and of the conservation of various types of forest communities with pine as an important component. A list of the individuals protected by the law is presented. Special note was made in the list of trees that are very thick, with a girth of 300-400 cm, that have a collor type of bark peeling, and those that were used as bee-hives. These latter ones are remnants of the intensive apiculture that characterized the early historical period. In the paper the value of forest reserves, seed stands and plus trees is stressed for the conservation of the gene pool within the natural populations of forest trees. In tables and figures the distribution of forest reserves, seed stands and plus trees in Poland is presented.

Аннотация: Researchers with the Northeastern Forest Health Monitoring program visited 256 plots in 1992, collecting data from nearly 8,000 trees in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersy, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. There continues to be no evidence of large, regional-scale declines in the health of forest ecosystems as determined by observations of visual crown indicators on trees, e.g., crown dieback, crown density, and foliage transparency. Several individual species (eastern hemlock, northern white-cedar, Americal beech) show slight evidence of decline in one or more visual crown indicators. Some of this decline is attributed to known cases of disease/pest incidence, e.g., outbreakes of beech bark disease and defoliation by the hemlock looper. Evidence of ozone damage was noted on 28 percent of 39 plots where ozone-sensitive plants were surveyed. Soil sampling was implemented on 50 plots in New England, with plants to cover all plots brginning in 1994.Surveys of off-plot insects and pathogens also showed no evidence of regional-scale decline of the forest resource in the Northeastern United States.

Ein prominentes und aktuelles Beispiel fur diesen Konfliktbereich ist die Entwicklung der Borkenkafer-Kalamitat im Nationalpark "Bayerischer Wald". Hier ist lange daruber gestritten worden, ob und wie die Massenvermehrung ohne Gegenmassnahmen naturlich zusammenbricht. Die zunehmende und anhaltende Kalamitatsentwicklung, im Trend gegenlaufig zur Situation im ubrigen Bundesgebiet, hat diese Frage weitgehend beantwortet und so auch ein aus Sicht des Waldschutzes hochinteressantes Forschungsobjekt beschert.

Аннотация: These mites are among the most host-specific associates of scolytid beetles: 16 of the 18 species or subspecies of Iponemus associated with the nearctic, pine-feeding ipines are monospecific, and each of the other two is restricted two closely related species of hosts. The mites and the beetles together are considered with regard to size correlations, the degree of host specificity, the mites as taxonomic indicators of their hosts, biogeography, life history, and the role of egg parasitism by the mites in the population regulation of their hosts.

Аннотация: The flight periods of bark beetles and the insect attack on pine logs, felled at intervals of 20 days from January to June, were studied by using window traps and by marking fresh entrance holes in the logs followed by autumn inspection. The periods of flight and attack had similar patterns. Blastophagus piniperda and B. minor, as well as several other bark beetle species, had relatively short periods of flight and attack, while especially Pityogenes chalcigraphus had a long flight period with less accentuated peak. Trypodendron lineatum had a flight pattern with one early and one late peak.

Аннотация: This monograph on the pine bark bug is the result of many years' reserach work in Scandinavia and other countries. The author gives a historical survey of the places of discovery of this insect, which, not so long ago, was hardly regarded as harmful in the West-European countries. The damage is done by sucking out the cell juice of young pine trees which causes deformity and destruction of the vessels. The damage done by the insect has been explained by means of experimental work and observations. This insect is only to be found on Scots pine and larch. It prefers clean, dry and warm places and likes pine cultures on light soil. The thick, shadowy, and mixed cultures are only attacked at the edges. The consequences of the appearnce of the insect depend mainly upon the size of the insect population and the age of the tree. The chances fro 6-10-year-old pines to endure an attack are very small. The necessary prophylactic measure to be taken is to plant the cultures with closer planting space. It is possible to achieve successful results in the control of this insect by fertilizing with nitrogen and also by using the insecticide lindan.

Аннотация: The aim of this study is to describe the magnitude and sources of provenances variation in wood density and tracheid length in Sweden. The study indicates that changes in forest management and forest tree breeding are needed in order to increase basic density and fibre length. Basic density and tracheid length were assessed in 67 provenances from one or more of 18 provenance traials at the age of 30 years. From each provenance and trial 10 trees were sampled from a 1.25 metre spacing and 10 trees from 2.0 metre spacing whenever possible. Assessments were made at growth rings five and ten respectively from the bark for basic density and at growth ring five from the bark for tracheid length.

Аннотация: The stem volume yield of 20 small stands of larch, mainly Larix sukaczewii Dyl., was studied in Northern Sweden. The stand range was 34-89 years. On the most productive sites trees attain a dominant height of 27 m at age 60 years. Tree height increment is still continuing at age 90 years. The productivity of larch varies widely, depending on site quality. During a 100-year rotation, the total volume yield of larch on medium sites was calculated at 500 m3 ha-1, and at 1000 m3 ha-1 on the most productive sites (both including bark). On the most productive sites, stem volume yield of larch exceeded that of indigenous conifers by 10-25 per cent (excluding bark). On poor, dry, flat or waterlogged sites the yield of larch was inferior to that of indigenous conifers. On high-altutude sites, surprisingly high yields were observed.

Аннотация: The heating values of wood, inner and outer bark, and foliage components of seven small-s.ze tree species were studied. Significant differences were found between species within each component. However, the differences between species for weighted stem, crown and whole-tree biomass are very small. The weighted heating value of the crown mass is slightly higher than that of the stem in all species. The heating value of stem, crown and whole-tree material was found to increase with increasing latitude. The effective heating of wood correlated best with the lignin content, inner bark with carbohydrate, and outer bark with carbohydrates and the extractives soluble in alcalic solvents. It is suggested that the determination of the heating value might be used as an indicator of the cellulose content of coniferous wood.
