This paper describes a long-term study of aboveground phytomass before and after the clearfelling of two Norway spruce stands. The clearfelled areas were treated in different ways:(1) slash was left in situ, as in conventional forestry; (2) slash was removed, as in whole-tree harvesting; and (3) controlled burning was carried out, as was common practice in northern Sweden about 40 Years ago. The phytomass of the field-layer vegetation was determined 1, 4. 10, and 16 years after clearfelling. The phytomass of the ground-layer vegetation was measured one and four years after clearfelling.

Аннотация: Biomass burning has become recognized as a key element of global change. Best estimates of current and past emissions suggest fire now profoundly affects atmospheric chemistry, the carbon cycle, and climate and may have done so for millions of years. Literature values place carbon sequestration during biomass burning in excess of 20% of the total anthropogenic C releases to the atmosphere, which, falling oxidative losses, would tie up the globe's surface C in less than 106 yr. And the relative importance of biomass burning may have been greater in the past, before large increases in fossil fuel combustion. The potential importance of these burning rates for biodiversity, C and O cycles, air quality, and climate have impressed a diverse community of ecologists and atmospheric chemists and served as a theme for a recent Dahlem workshop some of us organized on biomass burning.

Аннотация: This monograph covers the impact and role of fire in tropical ecosystems. It also studies the impact of tropical wildland fires and biomass burning on global ecosystem processes. The magnitude and impact of today's escalating tropical vegetation degradation by fire is described by contributions of remote sensing. The guality of emissions from biomass burning and an overall pantropical assessment of gaseous emissions from vegetation burning highlight their impact on a changing global atmosphere. The final chapter demonstrates that global climate change may itself have considerable effects on vegetation and fire regumes.

Аннотация: Human influence during the past 300 years has also undoubtedly changed the character of eastern forests and made them more susceptible to a number of pests, including the gypsy moth. Practices such as land clearing, heavy cutting, grazing, and indiscriminant burning have resulted in a network of forest stands that reflect different successional stages of disturbance.

Аннотация: Total amounts of plant nutrients in biomass, humus and mineral soil were determined in two old Norway spruce ecosystems in central and northern Sweden. Measurements were repeated 1, 4, 10 and 16 years after clearfelling on plots on which slash was retained, removed or burnt. Different analytical methods for plant-available nutrients were used and the relationship between them was calculated.

fire weather -- fuels -- fire behaviour

Аннотация: This report documents synoptic and local weather, indicates the nature and condition of forest fuels, and describes some important aspects of fire behaviour and effects. The identification and measurement of individual fuel and weather factors in fire behavior is basic prediction of critical fire conditions. Much of the information about fire weather, fuels and fire behavior relates to burning conditions in the huge fire south of Lesser Slave Lake but similar conditions appear to have been present for all fires in the zone of high fire occurrence.

Аннотация: This report describes the first step in a comprehensive study of the efficacy of presribed burning in the silvicultural management of white, red and jack pine and associated species in Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest Region of Canada. Most of the research on the effects of fire on vegetation has dealt with prescribed burning and wild fires on a broad scale. The problem is to determine the combinations of heat and time that will dictate whether tree cambium lives or dies. Species differences, determined by comparative heat transfer through bark to the cambium depends on such physical properties as thermal condictivity and diffusivity, specific heat of cork, bark, and wood, density of these tissues, and moisture content. This paper describes a technique developed for studying heat transfer.

air-blast-type machine -- forest fire control -- herbicides and insecticides -- dry chemicals

Аннотация: A back-packed, air-blast-type machine designed to apply herbicides and insceticides, was tested as a forest fire control device using dry-powder the machine extinguishants. Filled with ABC-type dry powder the machine extinguished fires burning in small test cribs of pine slash, but could not-perhaps because of low capacity - control a fire in a section of a red pine plantation. Test results suggest the possibility of controlling crown fires with dry chemical extinguishants. (The machine also quickly dried unlined forestry hose).

humus -- clear-cut -- standard methods -- fire danger

Аннотация: Coniferous raw humus materials were experimentally burned on clear-cut jack pine sites in Central Ontario. The drought conditions associated with each in a series of burns were expressed as drought index - fire danger combinations, all based on local weather and determined by standard methods. Both the moisture content of humus materials and the rates of humus disposal by burning varied with the drought index - fire danger combinations. Other factors affecting the rates of humus disposal included the textural humus types, the original humus depths and the major fuels present. The relationships obtained were considered useful as guides in future burning operations.

Аннотация: The first phase of this study consisted of the development of a computer modeling framework and the use of published information to establish the sector's current role as a net source or a net sink of atmospheric carbon. The framework includes age-dependent carbon sequestration by living forest biomass, net detrital litter fall of carbon to the forest floor, subsequent accumulation and decomposition release an three soil compartments, retention of carbon in manufactured products derived from harvested forest biomass, and burning of forest biomass for energy. There is explicit representation of the role of ecosystem disturbances, such as fire, insect-induced stand mortality, and harvesting (clear-cutting, and slash burning, and partial cuttings), as they affect carbon releases and transfers to the forest floor and to the forest product sector.
