Аннотация: Professor Maz'ya is one of the foremost authorities in various fields of functional analysis and partial differential equations. Maz'ya is a prominent figure in the development of the theory of Sobolev spaces. He is the author of the well-known monograph Sobolev Spaces (Springer, 1985). The following topics are discussed in this volume: Orlicz-Sobolev spaces, weighted Soboleb spaces, Besow spaces with negative exponents, Dirichlet spaces and related variational capacities, classical inequalities, including Hardy inequalities (multidimensional versions, the case of fractional Sobolev spaces etc.) Hardy-Maz'ya-Sobolev inequalities analogs of Maz'ya's isocapacitary inequalities in a measure-metric space setting, Hardy type, Sobolev, Poincare, and pseudo-Poincare inequalities in different contents including Riewmannian manifolds, measure-metric spaces, fractal domains etc. Maz'yas capacity analogue of the coarea in metric probability spaces, sharp constants, extension operators, geometry of hypersurfaces in Carnot groups, Sobolev homecomorsms, a converse to the Maz'ya inequality for capacities and applications of Maz'ya capacity method.

Аннотация: Long-term field experiments are described, in which nitrogen and other plant nutrients were added regularly to young Scots pine stands at two sites in Sweden, Lisselbo (1969-1988) and Norrliden (1971-1989; some treatments still in progress). A main aim was to establish a range of needle nitrogen concentration levels, as stable as possible, and to study the effects of these and of other factors (other added nutrients, soil acidity changes, irrigation) in tree growth and tree nutrient status. The importance of long-term field experiments in the study of urgent environmental problems, such as nitrogen saturation and soil acidification, is discussed.

Аннотация: The available observations upon the behavior of streams in USA and abroad have established the following facts: 1.The total discharge of large rivers depends upon climate, precipitation, and evaporation. 2. The regularity of flow of rivers and streams throughout the year depends upon the storage capacity of the watershed, which feeds the stored water to the streams during the summer through underground seepage and by springs. In winter the rivers are fed directly by precipitation, which reaches them chiefly as surface run-off. 3. The forests play an important part, especially on impermeable soils, of forest cover on the watersheds.4. Floods which are produced by exceptional meteorological conditions can not be prevented by forests, but without their mitigating influence the floods are more servere and destructive

Аннотация: Irregular seed production is a rather common phenomenon on forest trees, including several species of conifers. Good and poor crops follow each other at intervals. This makes it necessary to store seed of disired species, so that regular supplies are available each year for planting purposes. In order that seed may not lose its germination capacity during storage, suitable conditions must be provided, e.g. low temperature, low relative humidity, etc. . An important factor affecting by the germination capacity of stored seed is the amount of mechanical damage it possesses (e.g. from dewinging, etc.)

Аннотация: The microbial invasion of unpeeled birch pulpwood during outside storage was studied. It was shown that the wood was invaded by a number of different micro-organisms - especially by fungi. Fungi with a minor wood-destroying capacity were found early in the wood, but later disappeared, being unable to complete with more pronounced wood-destryers. Аннотация: Cones from a young (24-28 years) and an old stand (120-280 years) of Pinus sylvestris L., originating from Lycksele in north Sweden were examined in the laboratory to establish whether there are biological restrictions on the use of seeds from young stands. The number of cones per ha was approximately 71 000 in the old stand and about 29 000 in the young stand, which corresponded to 4.3 respectively 2.1 kg of filled seeds. Cones from the young stand exceeded cones from the old stand in length, volume and dry weight: consequently the seeds from the young stand were heavier than those from the old stand. There were no differences between the two stands in other properties, such as germination rate and capacity, number of seeds per cone, percentage of empty seeds and extractability. There appears to be no biological reason for restricting cone collection from a young stand of the above age.

Аннотация: A back-packed, air-blast-type machine designed to apply herbicides and insceticides, was tested as a forest fire control device using dry-powder the machine extinguishants. Filled with ABC-type dry powder the machine extinguished fires burning in small test cribs of pine slash, but could not-perhaps because of low capacity - control a fire in a section of a red pine plantation. Test results suggest the possibility of controlling crown fires with dry chemical extinguishants. (The machine also quickly dried unlined forestry hose).

Аннотация: Microbial parameters derived from the short-term Michaelis-Menten type model are tested and applied on the ecosystem study Soil dried immediately after sampling and stored at 4 graduate C was moistened to 60% water holding capacity and CO2 production was measured (GC) after 24 h (respiration response to water supply, Vds). The glucose was added into the soil and CO2 production was measured 16 to 24 h later (maximum respiration, Vmax). Substrate saturation kinetics of respiration was measured after addition of glucose in 6 different concentrations. Soil heterotrophic respiratory potential was expressed as Vds/Vmax ratio; biologically available C (ACbr) and potential flush of the biologically available C (ACds/ACbr) was estimated using Michaelis-Menten type model. After moistening of the soils, extra C is released, the amount of which is characteristic for the given soil. Application pf the short-term kinetic approach on the upper soil layer of various ecosystems (Western Canada, Central Siberia transect).
