Аннотация: The purpose of the present investigation was to compare the megasporogenesis in a clone of Norway spruce with an ordinary seed set and a clone of a reduced seed set. The early prophase I stages had the same appearance in both clones. During the last part of diplotene there was a separation of the bivalents (i.e. desynapsis occurred) in the clone with the reduced seed set. During metaphase I - anaphase I 97 per cent of the embryo sac mother cells from the desynaptic clone cantained at least one univalent. As a consequence of the occurrence of univalent micronuclei and other irregularities were observed during subsequent stages. Frequently the irregularities caused a degeneration of the cells. Thus, it was proved that the desynapsis was resposble for the poor seed set in the desynaptic clone of Norway spruce.

Аннотация: The study was performed in a clone traial of Picea abies. Based on the data from this investigation it will be possible to estimate the gene contribution of the individual clones to the filial generation. A phenological study of the clones is also of importance for the composition of the second generation seed orchards if they will be built up by clones from the first generation seed orchards. It was pointed out that the effective number of clones in a seed orchard was lower than the real one depending on variation in fertility and the moment of the flowering. Differences concerning male and female flowering also contribute to a reduction of the effective numbers of clones.

Аннотация: The development of pollen tubes and ovules and the formtion of embryos and endosperm after different types of pollination: self-pollination, cross-pollination and wind-pollination were studied in ten clones of Pinus silvestris. Pollination and fertilization took place in all types of pollination. At a certain stage of development, however, embryos in some seeds began to degenerate. This degeneration was followed by a breaking down of the endosperm and resulted in empty seeds. The percentage of degenerated seeds was highest after self-pollination, considerably lower after wind-pollination. The results indicate that inviable zygotes, homozygous for lethal or sub-lethal genes, are formed after self-pollination and explain the high percentage of empty seeds usually found after this type of pollination. Wind-pollination may to some extent involve self-pollination. No clone was found to be quite self-sterile, but the differences in self-fertility between the clones were rather great.

Аннотация: Some applications of the isozyme technique for studies in seed orchards are discussed. The basis of these studies is the opportunity to use clones in the seed orchards which are isozymetically distinct from the others. If a clone in one locus carries one or two alleles unique or rare to the orchard, it may then be possible to trace the contribution of this particular clone to the seed formation. The use of this method in studies on the net effect of open pollination in a seed orchard is pointed out. In the absence of such unique alleles for the estimation of the pollination situation, another method is suggested. This method can be made use of by collecting open-pollinated seeds from a clone and counting plants from these which, by means of the isozyme pattern, show a documented cross-pollination. In this way it is possible to obtain information on the occurrence of selfing. Checking of the isolation technique for controlled crosses is also possible with the isozyme technique.
