Аннотация: In this book a global shape model is developed and applied to the analysis of real pictures acquired with a visible light camera under varying conditions of optical degradation. Computational feasibility of the algorithms derived from this model is achieved by analytical means. The aim is to develop methods for image understanding based on structured restoration, for example, automatic detection of abnormalities. We also want to find the limits of applicability of the algorithms. This is done by making the optical degradations more and more severe until the algorithms no longer succeed in their task. This computer experiment in pattern theory is one of several. The others, LEAVES, X-RAYS, and RANGE, are described elsewhere. This book is suitable for an advanced undergraduate or graduate seminar in Pattern Theory (or Pattern Recognition), or as an accompanying book for Applied Probability, Computer Vision, or Pattern Recognition.

It thus seems appropriate to bring out a small volume surveying the subject in its present state. It is not the authors'intension to extoll the accomplishments of the theory unduly. Indeed, we have emphasized its shortcomingsas well as its achievements, and hope that a critcal awareness of limitations of present theoretical pictures will lead most quickly to their improvement. Similarly, in the experimental realm, while summarizing the basic information that has been gathered, we have tried to point out many gaps and to reveal numerous cases where inadequate control of purity, temperature, radiation conditions, and other variables make results difficult to interpret and of uncertain generality. The book is concerned mostly with the physics of radiation effects, not with the chemistry of such effects, and not at all with biological effects. This means that displaced atoms have been given more prominence than ionization, and that organic substances have been given far less space than any other types of solids. It should be also noted that we are primarily concerned with energetic radiation, of x- ray energies and higher, and thus effects of optical, infrared and ultraviolet irradiation are omitted. Although these phenomena(luminescence, photochemistry, etc.) are unquestionably radiation effects, their study goes much farther back, they have been reviewed in many places, and the theoretical ideas involved are sufficiently different from those relevant to high-energy radiation to allow a practical separation. The book deals mainly with fundamentals, and this means that preference is given to simple systems and to irradiationscarried out under controlled and analyzable conditions. At the same time a survey is given of the more striking physical effects arising from irradiations, many of these being observed in complicated situations where theoretical understanding is difficult. It is hoped that the treatment given will be of use to graduate students, to scientists in fields other than radiation effects, and to specialists in radiation effects who desire a broad and integrated review of the fundamentals of their field. The writers are indebted to their colleagues in the Solid State Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory for many helpful discussions, to R.W. Powell and R.A. Аннотация: Statistical mechanics may be naturally divided into two branches, one dealing with the equilibrium systems, the other with nonequilibrium systems. The equilibrium properties of macroscopic systems are defined in principle by suitable averages in well-defined Gibb's ensembles. This provides a framework for both qualitative understanding and quantitative approximations to equilibrium behaviour. Nonequilibrium phenomena are much less understood at the present time. A notable exception is offered by the case of dilute gases. Here are basic equation was established by Ludwig Boltzmann in 1872.The Boltzmann equation still forms the basis for the kinetic theory of gases and has proved fruitfull not only for a study of the classical gases Boltzmann had in mind but also, properly generalized, for studying electron transport in solids and platsmas, neutron transport in nuclear reactors, phonon transport in superfluids, and radiative transfer in planetaryand stellar atmospheres. Research in both the new fields and the old one has undergone a considerable advance in last thirty years. In the last ten years, a new wave of interest has surrounded the Boltzmann equation, stemming from its unique role in the theory of time-dependent phenomena in large systems. In fact, the Boltzmann equation appears as a prototype of a reduced description taking into account only partial information about the underlying microscopic state (fully described by the coordinate and the momenta of all the molecules), but nevertheless undergoing an autonomous time evolution. Thus the problem of the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from the microscopic description has attracted a certain amount of interest among physicists and mathematicians. This, in turn, has revived the interest in the theory of existence and uniqueness of the solutionsof the Boltzmann equation, since this problem has proved to be intimately tied with the previous one. This justifies the present book (which tries to present a unified approach to the problems arising in different fields mentioned above) by exploiting the similarities whenever they exist and underlining the differences when necessary. The main line of exposition, however, is tied to the classical equation established by Boltzmann, and hence the detailed description of some applications almost exclusively refer to monatomic neutral gases. Appropriate references are given, however, to papers dealing with similar problems arising in other fields, with particular concern for neutron transport, gas mixtures, and polyatomic gases. The material dealing with the basic properties and applications known before 1975 was covered in the previous book by the author; thus, it was natural to incorporate in the present book the material of the first seven chapters of that book. This material is updated in an extensive Appendix, coveringthe developments from 1975 to 1987. But the main feature of the book is Chapter VIII, completely rewritten and covering the important studies resulting from new mathematical approaches to the old problem of existence and uniqueness, and the new once tied up with the question of validity. There is still no satisfactory prooffor existence of solutions under general reasonable initial conditions. The material presented here indicates, however, that a great deal of progress has been achievedin recent times. There is no doubt that the better understanding resulting from this progress will be essential to the further penetration to be expectedin the next few years.It is hoped that the book will be usefull as a textbook for an advanced course in kinetic theory and as a reference for mathematicians, physicists, and engineers interested in the kinetic theory of gases and its applications.

Аннотация: The composition and writing of these Lecture Notes arose from the realization of two facts. The first one is, that the approach of the fiftieth birthday of W.Eckhaus who has been a versatile and influential applied mathematician, working in the United States of America, in France and in the Netherlands. He has contributed fundamentally in the field of non-linear stability theory of partial differential equations, asymptotic analysis especially attracted many young mathematicians in the Netherlands with as a result a rapid and varied developement of the theory. This leads us to the second fact. Asymptotic analysis arose from now classical theories in celestial mechanics and fluid mechanics. The flourishing of asymptotics during the last ten years, however, took place within the discipline of applied mathematics and there is an understandable lag in the application of these new theories. One expects the subleties of the matching conditions or the estimationtheory by Hilbert-space methods to take some time before being appliedin the physical sciences. The realization of this second fact has providedthe main idea behind the writing of most of papers in this book: to show that asymptoticanalysisas a branch of mathematics can be applied to develop new theories in such varied fields as biology, plasmaphysics, celestial mecanics, Hamiltonian mechanics, the theory of ocean currents etc. It is in this dynamic sense that the contents of the book should reflect the title.

Подробно рассмотрены проблемы привлечения инвестиций в комплексные программы утилизации и переработки попутного газа. Аннотация: Представлены современные аспекты мультидисциплинарного изучения влияния микроэлементного загрязнения окружающей среды на природные популяции мелких млекопитающих - доминирующих компонентов микрофауны Урала. Монография является теоретико - экспериментальной работой, компенсирующей в какой-то степени неполноту системного анализа токсичных техногенных эффектов на организм. Обсуждаются молекулярные механизмы компенсаторно- приспособительных реакций системы крови, азотистого и окислительного метаболизма, анализируются уровни накопления в организме эссенциальных микроэлементов и токсикантов. Фактический материал свидетельствует о снижении уровня популяционного здоровья. Экспериментально установлено, что значительные резервные механизмы аварийного регулирования в гомеостатической системе млекопитающих природных популяций, индуцируя процессы детоксикации и стимулируя элиминацию генотоксических эффектов, способствуют восстановлению неспецифической резистентности к действию повреждающих агентов, что и определяет толерантность и высокую экологическую пластичность данных видов. Книга адресована физиологам, исследующим аспекты адаптации, специалистам в области экологии и молекулярной биологии, патологам, изучающим микроэлементы.

Аннотация: В монографии анализируются результаты исследований, проводившихся авторами в разные годы в контролируемых условиях и в естественной среде обитания, характерной для Средней Сибири, по влиянию стрессовых факторов: низкой температуры, гипоксии и дефицита воды в ризосфере на рост, морфогенез, содержание углеводов, общего и белкового азота, свободных аминокислот, фотосинтетических пигментов и активности ряда гидролитических и окислительно-восстановительных ферментов в тканях надземных органов и корней трёх основных лесообразующих видов хвойных: сосны обыкновенной, лиственницы сибирской и лиственницы Гмелина. Оценены результаты опытов по имитации влияния мерзлоты, затопления и почвенной засухи на биохимические показатели. Показаны специфические и неспецифические реакции хвойных на указанные стрессовые воздействия, оценена роль антиоксидантной системы защиты растений в стрессовых условиях. Книга предназначена для физиологов древесных растений, лесоводов и экологов.

Аннотация: Immunotoxicity, Immune Dysfunction, and Chronic Disease is among the first books to illustrate the linkage between environmental risk factors (e.g., chemicals, drugs, diet, lifestyles), environmentally-induced immune dysfunction and the full range of resulting chronic diseases and conditions. There is a detailed discussion of specific immune-based chronic diseases and conditions that emerge in children and adults and affect different physiological systems. The book integrates a consideration of risk factors and specific immunotoxic alterations with disease outcomes. A significant number of diseases and conditions are discussed, such as systemic allergic diseases affecting the lung, skin and gastrointestinal tract, systemic autoimmune diseases (type 1 diabetes,multiple sclerosis and lupus) and chronic conditions that are not traditionally associated with chemically-mediated immunomodulation (depression, frailty, and atherosclerosis). Inflammatory dysregulation is a common thread that connects many of the diseases and conditions discussed in this book and provides a central focus. Аннотация: Immunotoxicity, Immune Dysfunction, and Chronic Disease is among the first books to illustrate the linkage between environmental risk factors (e.g., chemicals, drugs, diet, lifestyles), environmentally-induced immune dysfunction and the full range of resulting chronic diseases and conditions. There is a detailed discussion of specific immune-based chronic diseases and conditions that emerge in children and adults and affect different physiological systems. The book integrates a consideration of risk factors and specific immunotoxic alterations with disease outcomes. A significant number of diseases and conditions are discussed, such as systemic allergic diseases affecting the lung, skin and gastrointestinal tract, systemic autoimmune diseases (type 1 diabetes,multiple sclerosis and lupus) and chronic conditions that are not traditionally associated with chemically-mediated immunomodulation (depression, frailty, and atherosclerosis). Inflammatory dysregulation is a common thread that connects many of the diseases and conditions discussed in this book and provides a central focus. Individual chapters are organized by disease with the addition of chapters that provide integrative information on: 1) patterns of disease comorbidities and 2) the safety testing of chemicals and drugs to reduce the risk of immune dysfunction. Each chapter contains a summary of key points as well as recommendations when appropriate. The book stresses the benefits of identifying the environmental risk factors of immune-mediated chronic disease and the potential to reduce the prevalence of these diseases and conditions. This volume is a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, risk assessors and regulators and students. Аннотация: The conditions of the sorption preconcentration of phenols from samples of natural and potable waters in Diapak P concentrator cartridges filled with super-cross-linked polystyrene are optimized. Countercurrent desorption with acetonitrile or methanol ensures the elimination the step of organic solvent evaporation. The observed reduction of the sorption of humic and fulvic acids (HFA) on the addition of sodium sulfite to the samples of natural and potable waters prior to their processing probably relates to the change of pH. The preconcentration of phenols from natural and potable waters at pH 6-8 substantially reduces the sorption of HFA. The method is used to determine phenols in samples of tap water and water from the Yenisei river by the added-found method.
