Аннотация: The results from the experimental area at Laxa could be interpreted as indicating that pine seed for use in Middle Sweden should be obtained from good stands farther north- as far as southern Norrland- however, the data are scanty, and should preferably be reinforced before more definite conclusions can be drawn. Where Inner Norrland was concerned, the investigation reemphasised the disirability of brining seed from the north for use in the south, rather than the reverse. By a process of "clearing" throughout Norrland from Norrbotten southwards, it should be possible to create favourable conditions for obtaining seed for reforestation at higher altitudes. A closer contact between the seed agencies concerned would improve the chances of satisfactorily solving the problem of seed supply until such time as the seed orchards can provide seed suitable for higher sites in larger quantities

stand -- germination -- stress -- methods and results

Аннотация: The present investigation is an attempt to describe further some of the complicated connections between the temperature climate and germinability of pine seeds and simultaneously their changing content of various types of sugar. To limit the ecological variation as far as possible, with the exception of the temperature factor, the studies have been based on material collected from one and the same pine stand. Collections of pine cones were made during three consecutive years, and the local temperatures were taken and recorded at the same time. The study is part of a more extensive investigation into ripening conditions of Scots pine seeds at higher altitudes in northern Sweden.

growth rhythm -- plant heit -- genetic correlations

Аннотация: The purpose of the present study is to throw more light on the variation between Picea abies populations for traits of economic interest that may be of value for tree breeding and gene conservation. To obtain the information we collected cones on 21 trees in four geographically wedely separated (lat 56-64 degrees ) populations of Picea abies in the rich cone crop year 1977

cones -- seeds -- stand

Аннотация: Cones from a young (24-28 years) and an old stand (120-280 years) of Pinus sylvestris L., originating from Lycksele in north Sweden were examined in the laboratory to establish whether there are biological restrictions on the use of seeds from young stands. The number of cones per ha was approximately 71 000 in the old stand and about 29 000 in the young stand, which corresponded to 4.3 respectively 2.1 kg of filled seeds. Cones from the young stand exceeded cones from the old stand in length, volume and dry weight: consequently the seeds from the young stand were heavier than those from the old stand. There were no differences between the two stands in other properties, such as germination rate and capacity, number of seeds per cone, percentage of empty seeds and extractability. There appears to be no biological reason for restricting cone collection from a young stand of the above age.

Conifers around the world : conifers of the temperate zones and adjacent regions   Vol. 1

Аннотация: Until now, the world's temperate conifers have never in a single publication, in a standardized format, been depicted in photographs taken from natural habitats. The authors traveled the world over 4 decades to document temperate woody plants for a planned Dendrological Atlas. The 2-volume Conifers Around the World will appeal to a wide range of readers, from scholars to armchair travelers. The conifers are presented by geographical region, offering an account of their natural distribution. Starting in Europe (including North Africa, Anatolia, and Macaronesia), the reader is invited to follow the conifers through Asia, then to the Americas (explored from west to east and then south), and finally to Australia+Tasmania and New Zealand. The two hardcover volumes (9 × 12") offer the reader over 3700 color photographs in 1089 pages, including: 1) An in-depth, richly illustrated introduction to conifer conservation, classification, morphology, climate, and distribution 2) A 44-page chapter on the 7 conifer families and 56 genera discussed in the book, including 1300 detail drawings and 6 pages of illustrations depicting pollen cones from each genus 3) 175 habitat photographs showing the most representative and picturesque conifer habitats on 6 continents 4) 474 distribution maps showing the natural range of each taxon 5) A Bark Gallery with 646 color photographs The species plates (541 species, subspecies, and varieties covered) are arranged geographically into 11 regions, each plate with 3-5 detail photos that highlight the most characteristic features of the taxon and one image showing each in its natural habitat. A brief text accompanying each plate provides essential descriptive and historical information. The Appendix in Volume 2 includes images and concise descriptions of 28 additional taxa, followed by a glossary, and extensive list of references, lists of the covered conifers by scientific and common names, and a quick finder index.
