Аннотация: To rationalize thinning in young coniferous stands, thinning systems have been developed in the past few years which permit the use of modern harvesters and logging machines. In the spring of 1973 a thinning experiment was established in the forest district Olpe, to examine the influence of largely mechanical cuttings on the increament of young Norway spruce stands. The paper gives a report of this experiment, and mentions the results of similar thinning experiments in the discussion. In conclusion, with regard to these scientific findings and to the thinning rules of the state forestry administrations, recommendations for the treatment of young spruce stands are given

Аннотация: Analyses of aggregated data of the dynamics of Russian forests during the period from 1966 to 1993 have identified a rather stable development of Forested Areas (FA) and growing stock (an increase of 8% and 5%, respectively). Unforested Areas (UFA) have decreased significantly; for example, the total amount od unforested burned areas declined from 68.4 to 31.9 million ha over the period. Average growing stock by age groups increased for all main forest-forming species (excluding mature and overmature coniferous stands). Development in the growing stock in European Russia has been positive, but Asian Russia has experienced a rather sever decline. Studies of the 1983-1993 period show somewhat different results. Official data show that the total growing stock for Russia underwent aserous decline over this period. An adjistment for systematic inventory errors still show that there has been a substantial decrease in the growing stock in Asian Russia. The decline identified during this latter period cannot be explained by the harvest carried out, but is probably due to disturbances such as forest fires, pest, insects, and anthropogenic activities. From analyses, it can be concluded that the quality of the forests has been seriously impoverished in Russia during the 1966-1993 period. This impovershment is due to severe local overharvesting in regions witrh development infrastructure and to so-called creaming - namely, the harvesting of the best stands of specific species over huge areas. There are still vast areas of unexploited and unmanaged forests in Russia. In spite of serious shortcomings in Russian forest management, the stability of Russian boreal forests and their capasity for natural regeneration seem to be extremely high. Therefore, it may to be premature to speak of "disappearing Russian forests".

Аннотация: Balsam fir, a small to medium-sized coniferous tree, is one of the most symmetrical and beautiful spesies of our northern forests. The wood is light in weight and color, limber, soft, and low in decay resistance. It has good pulping properties and is used principally in the manufacture of pulp. Balsam fir is also widely used for interior knotty panelling, fish box construction, crates, cooperage, millwork, and similar products not requiring high structural strength.

Аннотация: The book presents the principal schemes of the rhythmic variability of coniferous growth in the upper and northern limits in Eurasia in the form of generalized series for 400 and 500 years accordingly. A possibility of using the dendroindicator information for quantitative values of the influence of natural processes (fluctuating climate, mountain glaciation, volcanism, consequences of Tungus catastrophe, and others) and industrial waste on tree growth is examined. An interdependence is revealed concerning the tree growth anomalies distribution at the Extreme North of Eurasia, Scandinavia, Alaska, and Labrador with regards to changes of atmosphere circulation, fields of temperature anomalies, iciness of the Baltic Sea, Arctic Ocean, and geomagnetic and solar activity. The book is intended for geobotanists, foresters, biogeographers, climatologists, ecologists, dendrochronologists.

Аннотация: An attempt was made to raise the level of objectivity of bioindicato used to assess the quality of pine tree stands and environment. The bioindicators employed were: (1) the biometric characteristics of dominant trees (pine), (2) the developmental features of pine (vitality, self-sowing), and (3) pine ectomycorrhizae. To show the extent of threat from the pollution load, an analysis was carried out of the air monitoring data of the Forest Research Institute, considered to be the most systematic, complete and comprehensive (testing the biggest number of parameters). The general level of air pollution in the Wielkopolska National Park was established, and a comparison was made between the state of the abiotic environments of the WNP and other national parks and neighbouring forest inspectorates. Using a measuring tool known as an AS-1 conditiometer, an in vivo definition of intra-tissue changes was attempted. The fluorine deposit in the soil and plant tissues was assessed using standard chemical analyses. Studies were conducted in old-aged stands of pine in fresh coniferous forest habitats on four 1-ha observation plots delineated within the WNP boundaries as defined in 1957, and varying in their exposure to threat (3rd - 1st danger zones).

The island of Gotland, Sweden, with its diversity of natural systems (such as coniferous forests, wetlands, beach, and coastal ecosystems) and extensive human industry (including agriculture, forestry, and fisheries), presented an ideal opportunity to perform comprehensive studies on the interactions between resource use, economic activity, and the environment. The authors combined empirical studies with mathematica; models and emphasize in this work the integration of economic and ecological models. They consider the use of energy in the past and in the future, and they develop optimization models for assessing the contribution of renewable energy technologies in the context of the regional system.

Аннотация: The aim of the study was to provide statistical and econometric analysis as well as to forecast phenomena and processes of roundwood markets in Poland. Statistical analysis enabled the determination of the main directions and dynamics of major components of the roundwood market in Poland 1987-1997 (the structure and structural changes analysis). The results of the analysis served to evaluate the type and the impact of relationships between phenomena and processes of the roundwood market in the past period (1994-1997) (econometric modelling). The knowledge of the mechanisms ruling the roundwood market in the past period (1994-1997) was the basis to eleborate a short-term (for the year 1998) monthly forecast for the supply, demand and prices of roundwood in Poland (econometric forecasting).

Аннотация: These preliminary observations demonstrate that the phytotron will make it possible to determine the various photo- and thermoperiodic systems controlling the growth of different provenances of European conifers. It is quite likely that optimal growth and bud breakage are determined by night temperature in one provenance, by day temperature in others, and by the difference between the day and night temperature in still others as demonstrated for different coniferous tree species of North America. Finally, there may be provenances in which thermoperiodic growth control is absent and only photoperiodism operates. A set of 30 climates differeing with regard to photoperiods and thermoperiods are being used simultaneously in the phytotron for this purpose

Аннотация: The influence of growing conditions upon pigmentation in needles from seedlings of Scots pine and Norway spruce has been studied. The plant material was grown either in the open or in plastic greenhouses. A pronounced seasonal variation of both chlorophyll and carotenoids was found. The content of pigments was influenced also by growing conditions, plant age, needle age and origin of the seed source. The new technique of growing coniferous seedlings in greenhouses during the vegetation period does not have any harmful effect upon the seedlings, as far as the pigmentation of the needles is concerned.

Аннотация: The aim of the present study has been to evaluate the extension of eventual influences on the surrounding vegetation of the emission from the iron-sintering plant in Sweden- in close proximity to the communities Koskullskulle, Malmberget and Gallivare. The yearly emission of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride has been around 2000 ton and 175 ton, respectively for the last years. The content of sulphur and fluorine in the needles of Scots pine from the sample plots has been analysed and correlated to the emission source. The needle drop of coniferous trees, well-known from air polluted areas, has been quantitatively recorded and correlated with the occurrence and physiological reactions in some lichen species from the emission source.

Аннотация: The heating values of wood, inner and outer bark, and foliage components of seven small-s.ze tree species were studied. Significant differences were found between species within each component. However, the differences between species for weighted stem, crown and whole-tree biomass are very small. The weighted heating value of the crown mass is slightly higher than that of the stem in all species. The heating value of stem, crown and whole-tree material was found to increase with increasing latitude. The effective heating of wood correlated best with the lignin content, inner bark with carbohydrate, and outer bark with carbohydrates and the extractives soluble in alcalic solvents. It is suggested that the determination of the heating value might be used as an indicator of the cellulose content of coniferous wood.
