In the book the optimization approach widely spread in physics and economics is used to ecological systems. The cornerstone ofthis approach consists in application of the maximum and minimum principle (for example, minimization of light ring way or maximization of profit). Such ecological phenomena as intra- and interspecies relations, energy consumption in living organisms, resource distribution, changes in species composition in ecosystems during their development, and tree growth have been studied. The book is intended for ecologists, graduate and post graduate students, specialists intersted in the mathematical modeling of ecological processes.

Аннотация: Resource Economics is a text for students with a background in calculus and intermediate microeconomics and a familiarity with the spreadsheet program Excel. The book covers basic concepts (Chapter 1); shows how to set up spreadsheets to solve simple dynamic allocation problems (Chapter 2); and presents economic models for fisheries, forestry, nonrenewable resources, and stock pollutants (Chapters 3–6). Chapter 7 examines the maximin utility criterion when the utility of a generation depends on consumption of a manufactured good, harvest from a renewable resource, or extraction from a nonrenewable resource. Within the text, numerical examples are posed and solved using Excel’s Solver. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter. These problems help to make concepts operational, develop economic intuition, and serve as a bridge to the study of real-world problems in resource management. Jon M. Conrad is Professor of Resource Economics in the Department of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1973 to 1977, joining the Cornell faculty in 1978. His research interests focus on the use of dynamic optimization techniques to manage natural resources and environmental quality. He has published articles in the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, Land Economics, Marine Resource Economics, Biomathematics, Ecological Economics, Natural Resource Modeling, and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, where he served as an Associate Editor. He is coauthor, with Colin Clark, of the text Natural Resource Economics: Notes and Problems (Cambridge University Press, 1987) and is past President of the Resource Modeling Association. Cambridge published the first edition of Resource Economics in 1999.

cuttings -- forest products -- consumption -- world forest resources

Аннотация: The book deals with the study of forest resources and markets for forest products in all the principal regions of the world. The forecast made of future supply and demand for wood on the basis of certain specified assuymptions is held to be of special interest, as in no other field of man's economy production of an important raw-material is such a long-time proposition. Such forecast can only serve as a guide.

deer mice -- feeding

Аннотация: Cage feeding of deer mice, and red-backed mice, showed a daily maximum seed consumption of lodgepole pine of about 1,000 seeds and of white spruce, of 2,000 seeds. There was no difference in the amount of seed consumed by the two species of mice. Lodgepole pine seed was preferred over white spruce. Meadow voles, radily are lodgepole pine and white spruce seedlings following germination. Red-backed mice also are seedlings but not to the same degree as the meadow voles. The deer mouse was not tested

softwood lumber -- hardwood lumber

Аннотация: This report examines the domestic consumption patterns of forest products for the period 1960-2000 as well as projecting the domestic consumption. The projection methodology involves a two-step procedure. First, multiple regression analysis is used to relate the consumption of a specific forest product to a distributed lag of some general measure of economic activity (e.g. real gross domestic product in the construction industry). Second, forecasts of the measures of economic activity up to the year 2000 are obtained and placed into the models developed in step 1 in order to generate the final projections.

demand modeling -- nesprint industry -- recursive models -- advertising

Аннотация: Factors determing newsprint consumption in Finland during the period 1960-1986 were analyzed. An econometeric recursive multi-equation model desribing the structure of the newspaper industry was formulated and estimated to obtain information on direct factors influencing neasprint demand. Short-term and long-term demand elesticities for newspaper and newspaper advertising were estimated.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
forest taxation -- timber supply -- economic efficiency -- two-period model -- comparative statistic analysis

Аннотация: The effects and relative efficiency of alternative forest taxes are analyzed theoretically. The Fisherian two-period model of consumption, savings and timber harvesting is extended by incorporating the management intensity decision and deriving the concept of long-run timber supply. The effects of lump-sum (site productivity), realized income (yield) and ad valorem property taxes on short-run timber supply, management intensity, and long-run timber supply are establishhed. As the core of the study, the alternative taxes are compared in order to determine the appropriate forest tax regime in terms of the production efficiency. The study distinguishes between an initially undistored economy an an economy with pre-existing distortions due to capital income taxation (interest charge deductions).

Аннотация: This volume summarizes the current knowledge on the exchange of trace gases between forests and atmosphere with restriction that only carbon and nitrogen compounds are included. For this purpose the volume brings together and interconnects knowledge from different disciplines of biological and atmospheric sciences. It covers microbial and plant processes involved in the production and consumption of trace gases; the exchange processes between forest soils and vegetation on the one hand, and the atmosphere on the other hand; the fate of the trace gases exchanged inside the atmosphere as well as environmental influences on the exchange trace gases between forest ecosystems and atmospere.
