Аннотация: To rationalize thinning in young coniferous stands, thinning systems have been developed in the past few years which permit the use of modern harvesters and logging machines. In the spring of 1973 a thinning experiment was established in the forest district Olpe, to examine the influence of largely mechanical cuttings on the increament of young Norway spruce stands. The paper gives a report of this experiment, and mentions the results of similar thinning experiments in the discussion. In conclusion, with regard to these scientific findings and to the thinning rules of the state forestry administrations, recommendations for the treatment of young spruce stands are given

Аннотация: This book was made an attempt to take full account of three recent developments in forest practice: a large scale use of chemicals in the production of nursery stock and in other phases of silviculture; insufficient increament of stands and plantations on soils of depleted fertility; and erratic results obtained with partial cuttings conducted according to the empirical rules of silvicultural art.The successful handling of these problems requires not only a grasp of technicalities, but also a knowledge of basic relationships, a knowledge of basic relationships, a knowledge which allows the analytical information to be synthesized into a conclusion of practical significance.

Аннотация: The writer who carried out some experiments using water cultured plants in winter observed that, when water temperature was higher, transpiration rates of rooted cuttins of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) were influenced not so much by wind and the rates of seedlings of Sirakasi (Quercus myrsinaefolia Blume) were decreased by wind; while transpiration rate of Sugi was increased by wind and the rate of Sirakasi was not much affected when water temperature was lower. He presumed that the effect of wind on leaf temperature and evaporation, and the influence of temperature of evaporating surface on evaporation are combined together and the combination is observed as the results. To make clear these presumption, some further studies were carried out.

Аннотация: The first phase of this study consisted of the development of a computer modeling framework and the use of published information to establish the sector's current role as a net source or a net sink of atmospheric carbon. The framework includes age-dependent carbon sequestration by living forest biomass, net detrital litter fall of carbon to the forest floor, subsequent accumulation and decomposition release an three soil compartments, retention of carbon in manufactured products derived from harvested forest biomass, and burning of forest biomass for energy. There is explicit representation of the role of ecosystem disturbances, such as fire, insect-induced stand mortality, and harvesting (clear-cutting, and slash burning, and partial cuttings), as they affect carbon releases and transfers to the forest floor and to the forest product sector.
