Аннотация: A brief history is given for a 47-acre woodlot successively high-graded for the best timber, grazed by cattle, cut haphazardly for fuelwood then placed under management with the object of developing a balanced stand structure for the maximum production of wood volume under the selection system. Four stem-distributions are being tested, two levels of growing stock and two upper diameter limits, combined with two cutting cycles. From the analysis of the results the best, or ideal, stand structure will be determined for this area

Аннотация: A study of the response of 40- to 50-year-old balsam fir to four levels of crown release, 1 to 3,3 to 5,5 to 7 feet, and a control, was carried out at Green River, New Brunswick, between 1953 and 1958. The treatment led to increased basal area growth, but the degree of release had relatively little influence on the rate. The relationship of increment to various intrinsic and extrinsic factors was examined and basal area increment was found to be related to initial breast height diameter, crown width and a derived competition factor, but much variation is unexplained. An equation for predicting basal area growth is presented and a discussion of the possible factors contributing to the unexplained variation is given.

Аннотация: A multiple regression analysis of parameters which can be measured or interpreted on aerial photographs showed that crown width and tree height exhibit a good correlation with diameter at breast height. A tree volume table based on the above relationship was constructed and tested with good results.

Аннотация: The paper describes a modified intercept-per cent method of preparing yield tables, and shows that intercept-per cent varies with stand age as well as with site. The tables provide number of trees, basal area, average diameter and volume in cubic feet for the merchantable portion of a stand by ten-year age classes. Merchantable volume at 100 years is 2,200 cubic feet on site A, 1,923 cubic feet on site B, 1,523 cubic feet on site F and 1,289 cubic feet on site D.

Аннотация: In this paper the author described the results of the studies on the external appearance of Sugi stems from the sample plots established in Yoshino, Nishikawa, Nakoso and Obi districts as they represent the Sugi forest grown with typical different silvicultural treatments. Outline of the sample plots is shown in Table 1. Results are as follows: 1. The coefficients of variance of the tree height in sample plots appears to become larger as spacing density of the plantation decreases (Table 6). 2. The height of trees from Nishikawa is significantly lower than that of all others under 20 years, and that of trees from Obi is significantly taller than others above 20 years. 3. The coefficient of variance of the breast height diameter of sample trees in the sample plots is minimum for the trees of Obi districts where the plantation spacing is the widest (Table 7). 4. The relation between tree ages and b. h. d. of sample trees. The b. h. d. of sample trees at the same age classes appears to become larger as plantation spacing widens (Fig. 3). 5. The range of variance of the relation between height and b. h. d. of the sample trees appears to become considerably narrower as the spacing of trees in forest widens, and in Obi districts these relations are considerably different from those in others (Fig. 4). 6. The degree of full-body of sample trees in different sample plots appears to be smaller as plantation spacing widens, but the effect on its variance within sample plots is not clear (Table 8). 7. The degree of full-body of sample trees rapidly decreases as tree age increases under 15-20 years, but beyond this critical age it is observed that degree of full-body remains almost constant in Yoshino and Obi, and that it increases slightly in Nakoso and significantly in Nishikawa respectively as tree age increases (Fig. 5). 8. The clear length and the percentage of clear length to tree height in the sample trees seem to become larger as plantation spacing narrows, but it is contrary in the case of the coefficient of variance for the percentage of clear length to tree height. 9. The percentage of clear length to tree height of sample trees generally tends to be larger at the same age classes as plantation spacing narrows (Fig. 8).

A method of estimating site quality of logged land in the Coastal Douglas Fir belt of British Columbia

Аннотация: In recent years there have been many advances towards the practice of forestry in British Columbia. Among these have been attampts at regulating the annual cut in accordance with the principles of sustained yield. This has drawn attention to methods of assessing the growth potentialities of logged lands. This report gives a practical method for estimating the site-quality of logged land in terms of site index and of forest associations, either of which may be of value to the forester. More field data have gone into the preparation of a method for predicting forest associations than into the site-index method, and the former has a higher degree of success in prediction. Four site classes, however, have been predicted in terms of site index as compared to three forest associations. It should be stressed that this method of estimating site-quality, by means of stump diameter-growth measurements, is not an exact one, but merely serves as a rough guide toward the mapping of logged land.

Аннотация: This article deals with Suzuki's work in general, and especially with his secondcontribution in this publication. The importance of Suzuki's findings in the case of the stochastic description of the joint development of diameter and height as a two-dimensional vector has been particularly stressed. There is a need for such tools, also as far as projecting the stand taper curve is concerned. The second part deals with the problem of diffusion property in the growth process of the residual stand, this is done with the help of data analysis and special but quasi-realistic models. Analysis of aproaches, which result from stochastic differential equation has, in the one-dimensional case, led to a necessity to modify the model when ample data material was available. This caused a correction of the assumptions concerning the residual process and an examination of its properties.

Аннотация: Some relationships between crown size and stem diameter at breast height having application in silviculture, aerial inventories of forest resources and fire protection, were determined from 48 red spruce and 80 balsam fir growing together in the same stands. For trees of the same d.b.h., spruce crowns vary in width and average slightly wider than fir crowns, lengths are similar for both species, but spruce crowns are much heavier. All relationships examined were highly significant for both species but the strongest correlation was between d.b.h. and crown weight.

Аннотация: Timber quality in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in Sweden has deteriorated during the 20th century. A possible cause of this is the increasing proportion of timber that originates in planted stands. Two naturally regenerated and two planted pine stands, of the same genetic origin, were compared. The planted stands were established as spacing experiments (1.25 x 1.25-2.5 x 2.5 m) at Tonnersjoheden Experimental Forest (lat. 56 grades 42'N, long, 13 grades 06'E, alt 60 m). Volume growth and timber quality, i.e. taper, crookednees, number of branches, branch thickness, branch angle, crown size, occurrence of spike knots and damage were compared. The quality of dominant and co-dominant trees was higher in the naturally regenerated stands than in the planted stands. Of the planted trees, only 25% were straight, compared with 86% of naturally regenerated trees. In the planted stands, the mean diameter of the thickest branch below 2m was 23 mm, compared to 15mm inthe naturally regenerated stands. Timber quality and planting density were also positively correlated, quality being very poor at the widest spacings. Volume growth at initial spacings of 1.75 x 1.75m and denser was estimated to be 5-10% higher than that in the naturally regenerated stands.

Аннотация: The summary of crown ratings data from open grown, dominant, and codominant trees indicates no pattern of major decline in any species. For many species, these data represent the first such measurement and an exact interpretation is difficult. The full value of the data, as well as diameter measurements, will be realized with plot remeasurement in succeeding years. This year's data will establish the baseline against which to identify changes in subsequent years.

The height and stem increment in pines is described during two growing seasons in the field at 67 degree N and during two months in climate chamber (pine and spruce plants). The daily increment rhythm, which was regular during fair weather days, varied during the season. The stem increment of the pines in the field started at almost the same time during the days (at noon and early in the morning during early and late growing seasons respectively).
