Аннотация: Meiosis in PMC of aspen in twigs allowed to develop in greenhouse, was studied and demonstarted by photomicrographs. During the conditions prevailing in the greenhouse the development from pachytene to microspores took plaxce within around 30 hours. Pachytene was shown to be the longest lasting stage followed by metaphase I, diplotene and interphase. The development starts in the base of the catkin and proceeds upwards. Several meiotic stages might simultaneously be found in individual flowers

Аннотация: In the present paper the meiotic development of three larch species was srudied. Emphasis was paid to the analysis of the conditions of importance for beaking the dormancy of the deplotene stage as well as the factors resposible for the initiation of further development from diplotene. On the basis of detailed analysis of meiosis in a few clones 1966-67 as well as in larger number of clones in 1967-68, the following characteristics of the meiotic development of the three species were observed. It was shown that irregularities did not appear until sensitive cells were exposed to low temperatures. All phases of active division during meiosis were believed to be highly sensitive to low temperatures. A direct relationship between the maximum percentage of irregularities during meiosis and pollen sterility was demonstrated. This means that cytological examinations during meiosis could advantageously be performed in order to predict the pollen sterility. With the aid of such tests the crossing programmes in seed orchards should be planned

Аннотация: The purpose of the present investigation was to compare the megasporogenesis in a clone of Norway spruce with an ordinary seed set and a clone of a reduced seed set. The early prophase I stages had the same appearance in both clones. During the last part of diplotene there was a separation of the bivalents (i.e. desynapsis occurred) in the clone with the reduced seed set. During metaphase I - anaphase I 97 per cent of the embryo sac mother cells from the desynaptic clone cantained at least one univalent. As a consequence of the occurrence of univalent micronuclei and other irregularities were observed during subsequent stages. Frequently the irregularities caused a degeneration of the cells. Thus, it was proved that the desynapsis was resposble for the poor seed set in the desynaptic clone of Norway spruce.
