Unfortunately, problems of accurate assessment and precise identification plague the full understanding of the effects of mould on human health. Addressing exposure assessment and identification, Microorganisms in Home and Indoor Work Environments: Diversity, Health Impacts, Investigation, and Control, Second Edition discusses the methodology for conducting investigations on indoor environments, including details on key fungi and actinobacteria, and reflects advances in predicting their occurrence in buildings in various parts of the world. Аннотация: Immunotoxicity, Immune Dysfunction, and Chronic Disease is among the first books to illustrate the linkage between environmental risk factors (e.g., chemicals, drugs, diet, lifestyles), environmentally-induced immune dysfunction and the full range of resulting chronic diseases and conditions. There is a detailed discussion of specific immune-based chronic diseases and conditions that emerge in children and adults and affect different physiological systems. The book integrates a consideration of risk factors and specific immunotoxic alterations with disease outcomes. A significant number of diseases and conditions are discussed, such as systemic allergic diseases affecting the lung, skin and gastrointestinal tract, systemic autoimmune diseases (type 1 diabetes,multiple sclerosis and lupus) and chronic conditions that are not traditionally associated with chemically-mediated immunomodulation (depression, frailty, and atherosclerosis). Inflammatory dysregulation is a common thread that connects many of the diseases and conditions discussed in this book and provides a central focus. Individual chapters are organized by disease with the addition of chapters that provide integrative information on: 1) patterns of disease comorbidities and 2) the safety testing of chemicals and drugs to reduce the risk of immune dysfunction. Аннотация: Researchers with the Northeastern Forest Health Monitoring program visited 256 plots in 1992, collecting data from nearly 8,000 trees in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersy, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. There continues to be no evidence of large, regional-scale declines in the health of forest ecosystems as determined by observations of visual crown indicators on trees, e.g., crown dieback, crown density, and foliage transparency. Several individual species (eastern hemlock, northern white-cedar, Americal beech) show slight evidence of decline in one or more visual crown indicators. Some of this decline is attributed to known cases of disease/pest incidence, e.g., outbreakes of beech bark disease and defoliation by the hemlock looper. Evidence of ozone damage was noted on 28 percent of 39 plots where ozone-sensitive plants were surveyed. Soil sampling was implemented on 50 plots in New England, with plants to cover all plots brginning in 1994.Surveys of off-plot insects and pathogens also showed no evidence of regional-scale decline of the forest resource in the Northeastern United States.

The analysis of numerical change in gypsy moth populations

Аннотация: A study of gypsy moth, population dynamics was carried out over a 7-year period in several areas in northeastern New York. The data were summarized in life tables, stratified by density and sex, and then analyzed by mathematical models. Variation in the survival rates of the instar IV to VI female larvae and the female pupae was the greatest source of variation in density among dense populations. Variation in the survival rates of both instar I to III and IV to VI female larve was most important among sparse populations. Disease was the primary determinant of variation in the survival rate of dense populations of instar IV to VI larvae, while agents other than disease or parasites were most important at this stage among sparse populations. The survival rate of dense populations of the female pupae varied primarily in response to parasites and disease. Variation in the survival rate of the instar I to III larvae was probably primarily a function of variation in the dispertion rate of the newly hatched larvae. A generation model was developed that describes density at the start of a second generation as a function of the environmental variables associated with the above mortality-causing factors. It was tested against an independent body of data with some success.
