Аннотация: In 2007, scientists estimated the direct cost of diseases associated with mould and dampness on the US population to be in the range of 4 billion dollars, and the indirect costs of lost work and school days are gauged even higher. The US Centers for Disease Control recently concluded that elimination of moisture and mouldy materials in the home definitively results in improved health. Unfortunately, problems of accurate assessment and precise identification plague the full understanding of the effects of mould on human health. Addressing exposure assessment and identification, Microorganisms in Home and Indoor Work Environments: Diversity, Health Impacts, Investigation, and Control, Second Edition discusses the methodology for conducting investigations on indoor environments, including details on key fungi and actinobacteria, and reflects advances in predicting their occurrence in buildings in various parts of the world. Beginning with a review of types of microorganisms in outdoor and indoor air, their growth and control in home and work environments, and their role in respiratory disease, this second edition presents new studies on pollen and its allergenic effects, the mechanistic basis for the effects of toxins and inflammatory agents on lung biology, and the use of molecular methods for determining microbial contaminants. On the practical side, this edition examines remediation, control, and quality assurance; occupational exposures in a wide range of environments; and infectious fungi and bacterial endotoxins in the built environment. Bringing together the state-of-the-science in this health-critical field, this accurate and timely book offers researchers, public health officials, and industrial hygienists crucial information on specific microorganisms in the built environment, along with current measurement and assessment solutions to clean up indoor air and keep residents and workers healthy in the future.

Immunotoxicity, Immune Dysfunction, and Chronic Disease is among the first books to illustrate the linkage between environmental risk factors (e.g., chemicals, drugs, diet, lifestyles), environmentally-induced immune dysfunction and the full range of resulting chronic diseases and conditions. There is a detailed discussion of specific immune-based chronic diseases and conditions that emerge in children and adults and affect different physiological systems. The book integrates a consideration of risk factors and specific immunotoxic alterations with disease outcomes. A significant number of diseases and conditions are discussed, such as systemic allergic diseases affecting the lung, skin and gastrointestinal tract, systemic autoimmune diseases (type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and lupus) and chronic conditions that are not traditionally associated with chemically-mediated immunomodulation (depression, frailty, and atherosclerosis). Inflammatory dysregulation is a common thread that connects many of the diseases and conditions discussed in this book and provides a central focus. Individual chapters are organized by disease with the addition of chapters that provide integrative information on: 1) patterns of disease comorbidities and 2) the safety testing of chemicals and drugs to reduce the risk of immune dysfunction. Each chapter contains a summary of key points as well as recommendations when appropriate. The book stresses the benefits of identifying the environmental risk factors of immune-mediated chronic disease and the potential to reduce the prevalence of these diseases and conditions. This volume is a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, risk assessors and regulators and students. Keywords: Chronic disease - Immune dysfunction - Immune system - Immunology - Immunotoxicity - Robert Luebke - Rodney R. Dietert - Toxicology

Аннотация: The organisms listed in this book include only those that are directly, or in a few instances indirectly, injurious to living trees. Species, such as many wood-boring insects, whose attacks are restricted to fallen trees have been exluded. Weed plants, unless they are at least in some measure parasitic, have also been omitted. Many of the included tree species are most commonly, but not invariably, treated as agricultural crops, and on the borderline the inclusion of some and the omission of others must necessarily be subjective; the principle of including too much rather than too little has been adopted.

Аннотация: Plant diseases are due mainly to the action of fungi, but some are caused by bacteria, a few by plasmodia, while others in which no particulate living organisms have, so far, been discovered, are believed to be due to virus infection. In plant viruses that have been studied in any detail the invisible agent multiplies with great readiness only in the living host from which the virus has been isolated in the form of a nucleoprotein. Other diseases, again, but of a non-parasitic nature, are attributed to physiological or to deficiency troubles, and probably all are influenced by the factors of the environment.

Аннотация: Since 1957, the International Union of Forest Organizations, Sect. 24, has a working group studying what can be done about forets tree diseases that might be dangerous if the the pathogen moved great distances, as from one continent to another. The group was agreed to limit the scope of the work initialy to a few genera of forest trees. In 1958, it was proposed to start with the diseases of the genera Pinus, Populus, and Quercus. On the the basis of these lists, a joint list of parasitical fungi on species of the genera Pinus, Populus and Quercus, and a list of the hosts of the fungi have been made.
