Аннотация: Situated in the southeastern outskirts of the town of Eger, the clay pit of the Wind brickworks is a vast exposure well visible even from a distance of several kilometres. The general dip of its sedimentary series is south-southeasterly; hence the oldest strata are exposed in the northern corner of the pit and the younger ones towards the south. Many layers contain plant remains which may, particularly in the younger layers, locally attain so graet an abandance that the individual fossils cannot even be seperated from one another. This circumstance renders their study fairly difficult on occasion

Аннотация: In this investigation, the effect of three distances: 22, 19 and 13 cm between the water level and the seed bed on Jacobsen apparatus (referred to in the following text as "water distance"), was studied on the germination of 24 samples of fresh and old Scots pine seed. The results showed that in most of the samples there was a tendency for germination percentage to be highest at the shortest water distance used (13 cm), although these differences were significant only in three cases. Also the germination rate was the fastest, at least in the first few days of the test, at 13 cm water distance in several samples. For the practical seed testing work, this study has indicated that it is important to keep the distance between the water level and seed bed on Jacobsen apparatus constant, in order to obtain comparable germination results

Аннотация: Four different afforestation experiments in the same peatland area within a distance of about 1,5 km were included. Soil and needle samples were taken from 116 plots altogether. The soil samples were taken from two depths: 0-10 cm (tilled layer) and 30-40 cm. Soil samples were analyzed for total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, B, Cu, NH4-N, NO3-N, pH and AAAc extractable P, K, and Ca. For the total nutrients the results were calculated per oven dry weight (mg/kg) and per area (kg/ha), and for AAAc extractable P, K, Ca per laboratory volume (mg/I) in addition. NH4-N and NO3-N were calculated only per laboratory volume (mg/1). The bulk density and organic matter content were also determined.

Аннотация: The effect of pollutants emitted by non-ferrous metal works on forest environment was investigated in Scots pine stands, at sites located at various distance from the emission source: a zinc smelter in the Upper Silesia Industrial Region an a cooper plant in the Legnica-Glogow Cooper Region. The obtained results imply that the elevated levels of heavy metals in upper soil horizons create the greatest threat to forests in these regions. Along the gradient of heavy metal pollution a distinct decrease in soil biological activity and decomposition rate was observed. The negative effect of heavy metals on forest environment was also manifested by the changes in plant communities and by a gradual decline of pine stands
