Аннотация: This book is the product of the Third Cary Conference (held in 1989), investigates the utility and limitations of cross-system comparisons in ecology. Among the topics explored in this volume are: methodological and philosophical difficulties in using a comparative approach, productivity and trophic structure in aquatic and terrestrial systems, cross-system comparisons of stress and disturbance, comparison of biogeochemical cycles, comparing tripical and temperate forest ecosystems, feedbacks between consumers and their resources, improving use of existing data.The methodological guidelines and practical advice contained in this volume will be highly applicable for researchers in all areas of ecology and related sciences.
