Аннотация: The papers in this volume form the basis of a Symposium on microbial ecology. Some papers deal with with the genetic basis of microbial variation, some are about the interaction of microbes with their inanimate environment and interactions between microbes. The other papers discuss the ecology of various groups of microbes, in several cases with special reference to their interaction with higher organisms. Microbial ecology is, in present stage of development, less quantitative than the ecology of animals and plants, but the papers in this volume reveal the extensive development of qualitative investigation that has been carried out in recent years and will from a valuable basis, not only for the discussions , but also for further studies
