Аннотация: Numerical optimization and parameter estimation are essential tools in a widevariety of applications, such as engineering, science, medecine, sociology and economics. For these optimization techniques to be exploited effectively, problem solvers need to be fully informed of the scope and organization of software for both the specialist and non-specialist; the underlying numerical methods; the aspects of problem formulation that affect performance; the assessment of computer results and the resolution of difficulties that may occur during the solution process.These topics form the basis of the organization of Practical Optimization. Much of the material about the estimation of results and the preparation of the problem has not been previously published. The book contains a description of methods for numerical optimization to a level which should make it a useful course text. It is intended that the book should be self-contained. Аннотация: The main subject of this work is the estimation of variances and confidence intervals, based on multistage samples. A bootstrap technique for variance estimation in multistage sampling is developed, which can easily be extended to an arbitrary number of stages. It gives an unbiased estimator in the linear case, both for sampling without replacement and sampling with replacement. An alternative technique was proposed by Rao and Wu 1988 for two stage samples which not only gives a variance estimator but also a bootstrap distribution. This bootstrap distribution can be used to construct confidence intervals.

Аннотация: Forest ecosystems of North Eurasia play an exclusively impotant role in the stabilization of biospheric processes. The estimation of boreal forests global functions is formred on the conception of forest ecosystems dynamics and mechanisms of their self-regulation based on biodiversity. An interconnected analysis of biodiversity and forests dynamics within the problem of global environmental and climatic changes is a prerequisite of stable functioning of the planet's forest cover. The focus on the problem of biodiversity is connected with the fragility of boreal forests, low indicators of biota's diversity and worsening of forests state under global environmental changes and their intensive economic exploitation. Preservation and replenishment of biodiversity is the base of environmental stabilisation and sustainable development. Different aspects of biodiversity and dynamics of ecosystems are considered in the volume. They are: 1) Scientific-methodological bases of researches; 2) Usage of mathematical modelling and G.E.S.-technologies; 3) Inventarisation of forests state in separate regions; 4) Improvement of economic activities.

Аннотация: In order to assess the methane fluxes from the russian soils to the atmosphere the following steps have been taken: 1)Information concerning soil types, areas, and coordinates for the soils of Russian was collected from the FAO/UNESCO (1974) Soil map of the world. 2) A database, based on experiments described in the literature, was generated concerning methane fluxes and environmental parameters influencing the fluxes. 3) Representative methane fluxes for the majority of the temperate, boreal and tundra soils were calculated based on the database. 4) The period of biological activity (PBA) for the different soils was estimated based on their geographical location. 5) Based on the above information the total annual methane fluxes are estimated based on the different soil's capacities to produce or consume methane. There are very few regions and ecosystems investigated by field measurements in comparison with the natural diversity. Thus, many soil units are not characterized by any measurements of the methane fluxes. The majority of the soil units with measurements represent automorphic soils and wetlands and wet soils are not sufficiently represented.

Аннотация: The aim of the study was to provide statistical and econometric analysis as well as to forecast phenomena and processes of roundwood markets in Poland. Statistical analysis enabled the determination of the main directions and dynamics of major components of the roundwood market in Poland 1987-1997 (the structure and structural changes analysis). The results of the analysis served to evaluate the type and the impact of relationships between phenomena and processes of the roundwood market in the past period (1994-1997) (econometric modelling). The knowledge of the mechanisms ruling the roundwood market in the past period (1994-1997) was the basis to eleborate a short-term (for the year 1998) monthly forecast for the supply, demand and prices of roundwood in Poland (econometric forecasting).

Аннотация: The aim of this study is to develop a method for estimating the accuracy of the site indes curves which is independent of the method used for the construction of the curves. Site index curves for Scots pine in Sweden are used to illustrate the method. The investigation deals with prediction errors, i.e. errors caused by actual height development not following the site index curves. Permanent plot data is used to construct a stochastic, autoregressive simulation model, by means of which it is possible to study the variation of site index over age within stands over long periods. A number of simulations provide figures on sampling and measurement errors which, together with estimated prediction errors, are used to obtain recommendations on the number of plots required within a stand to reach a predefined level of accuracy at site index estimation.

Аннотация: The aim of this study is to establish functional relationships between site index and site properties, which can be used for predicting site index in forestry. The functions are derived from a mathematical frowth model, assuming that the effects of different growth factors interact in a multiplicative way. Data selected from the National Forest Survey and comprising more than 3 000 plots are used to estimate the parameters of the model by means of regression analysis. In total, 10 functions are constructed - 6 for Scots pine an 4 for Nrway spruce. These functions are checcked by an examination of residuals and by a comparison with data not used for constructing the functions. The checks gave fairly satisfactory results, and the functions seem suitable for their purpose.
