Аннотация: The expansion in forestry planting since the end of the first world war has provided foresters in Britain with a great deal of fresh knowledge about the particular insect problems associated with these new habitats in different phases of crop life. Most of the 280 species described here are common subjects of enquiry, although some are relatively new exotic pests. This guide aims to aid recognition and enable the reader to take appropriate decisions. This book is a valuable handbook for the naturalist as well as the field forester, manager and arboriculturist.

Аннотация: These mites are among the most host-specific associates of scolytid beetles: 16 of the 18 species or subspecies of Iponemus associated with the nearctic, pine-feeding ipines are monospecific, and each of the other two is restricted two closely related species of hosts. The mites and the beetles together are considered with regard to size correlations, the degree of host specificity, the mites as taxonomic indicators of their hosts, biogeography, life history, and the role of egg parasitism by the mites in the population regulation of their hosts.

Аннотация: The subfamily Ceratopogoninae (sensu Wirth, 1965a) is probably a natural (monophyletic) group but includes both blood sucking forms (Culicoidini) and predators on small insects. The insectivorous forms consist of a diversified array of six tribes and many genera represented in moist habitats throughout the world and especially abundant at lake margins. An attempt is made throughout to view the phenomena in a phylogenetic context.

deer mice -- feeding

Аннотация: Cage feeding of deer mice, and red-backed mice, showed a daily maximum seed consumption of lodgepole pine of about 1,000 seeds and of white spruce, of 2,000 seeds. There was no difference in the amount of seed consumed by the two species of mice. Lodgepole pine seed was preferred over white spruce. Meadow voles, radily are lodgepole pine and white spruce seedlings following germination. Red-backed mice also are seedlings but not to the same degree as the meadow voles. The deer mouse was not tested

seasonal feeding -- life cycle

Аннотация: The life cycle and shoot-feeding of Tomicus piniperda (L.) and T. minor (Hart.) (Col., Scolytidae) was studied in Simonstorp in southern Sweden (N. 58 degrees 47', E. 16 degrees 10') during the period 1972-1976. Special attention was given to the seasonal feeding actvity in the shoots of Scots pine (Pinus sylveastris L.) This shoot-feeding was related to certain events in the life cycle: flight period, departure of parent beetles from brood logs, length of oviposition period and emergence of the new generation. The spatial distribution of beetles within the pine crown was also studied. The influence of environmental conditions and some population factors upon the shoot-feeding was discussed.

resistance -- breeding -- pests -- mammals -- interspecific hybrids

Аннотация: The aim of this study were to determine 1) whether tree species (especially birch), origines, families or genotypes differ with regard to their genetic resistance to feeding by vole and hare, 2) the mechanism of resistance, 3) the phenotypic plasticity in resistance, 4) the correlation between resistance and growth, and 5) whether the differences in palatability found in cafeteria experiments are so relevant in the field conditions that we would be justified in defining resistance breeding as a tool for decreasing damage by mammalian herbivores to a tolerable level.

moose browsing -- feeding behaviour -- stand density -- plant phenology

Аннотация: The purpose of this study was to obtain information about moose feeding behaviour in young Scots pine stands in relation to tree density. This paper examins the following aspects: 1. The response of moose browsing to quantitative differences in food supply in terms of varying tree density. 2. Moose feeding preferences in relation to the nutritional status of food at low and high tree density. 3. The effcet of browsing in the young pine stand with respect to stem damage

flail delimbing -- whole-tree harvesting -- first thinning -- Pinus sylvestris -- Scots pine

Аннотация: Flail-delimbing-debarking-chipping techniques were studied in the harvesting of small-sized trees from the first commercial thinning of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). In the system developed in Finland, trees are felled motor-manually by chainsaw using a felling-piling method. Trees are bucked into approximately 5 m sections and simultaneously topped at a diameter of 5-7 cm, and then subsequently hauled into 4m-high road-side piles, by a forwarder. Delimbing, debarking and chipping are carried out at a landing site or terminal with a Peterson Pacific DDC 5000 unit, equipped with a feeding table to allow the processing of 5 m sections.

moose browsing -- feeding behaviour -- forest plantations -- main stem damage -- Pinus sylvestris

Аннотация: Factors affecting moose browsing in young Scots pine stands was studied in southern Finland. A total of 118 young stands, including stands forming a high density winter range, were inspected in 1988-89. The number of browsed twigs on the different tree species making up the stands emphasized the importance of food resource availability on moose feeding. On the high density winter range, pubescent birch and Scots pine were the main tree species browsed upon. Main stem damages of pine commonly occurred on the high density winter range, when the density of birch was over 6500 saplings/ha. As the height relationship between birch and pine increased, the degree of damage increased significantly. A low density of Scots pine stands easily leads to serious damage in respect to acceptable stand density recommendations.
