Аннотация: This book is the most influential book in agricultural science. It will be of value to students and research workers in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and soil science, and to others concerned with the maintenance of soil fertility and appropriate use of the land. The book emphasizes the quantitative effects of soil and climate on the growth of farm crops, forest crops and natural vegetation. It also takes into account current concern with problems of heavy metal and nitrate pollution.

Аннотация: This book was made an attempt to take full account of three recent developments in forest practice: a large scale use of chemicals in the production of nursery stock and in other phases of silviculture; insufficient increament of stands and plantations on soils of depleted fertility; and erratic results obtained with partial cuttings conducted according to the empirical rules of silvicultural art.The successful handling of these problems requires not only a grasp of technicalities, but also a knowledge of basic relationships, a knowledge of basic relationships, a knowledge which allows the analytical information to be synthesized into a conclusion of practical significance.

pollen shedding -- flowering

Аннотация: The study was performed in a clone traial of Picea abies. Based on the data from this investigation it will be possible to estimate the gene contribution of the individual clones to the filial generation. A phenological study of the clones is also of importance for the composition of the second generation seed orchards if they will be built up by clones from the first generation seed orchards. It was pointed out that the effective number of clones in a seed orchard was lower than the real one depending on variation in fertility and the moment of the flowering. Differences concerning male and female flowering also contribute to a reduction of the effective numbers of clones.

embryos -- endosperm

Аннотация: The development of pollen tubes and ovules and the formtion of embryos and endosperm after different types of pollination: self-pollination, cross-pollination and wind-pollination were studied in ten clones of Pinus silvestris. Pollination and fertilization took place in all types of pollination. At a certain stage of development, however, embryos in some seeds began to degenerate. This degeneration was followed by a breaking down of the endosperm and resulted in empty seeds. The percentage of degenerated seeds was highest after self-pollination, considerably lower after wind-pollination. The results indicate that inviable zygotes, homozygous for lethal or sub-lethal genes, are formed after self-pollination and explain the high percentage of empty seeds usually found after this type of pollination. Wind-pollination may to some extent involve self-pollination. No clone was found to be quite self-sterile, but the differences in self-fertility between the clones were rather great.

site quality -- satellite images -- discriminant analysis -- Markov random field -- sementation

Аннотация: Two operative forest site class estimation methods utilizing sateellite images have been developed for forest income taxation purposes. For this two pixelwise classification methods and two post-processing methods for estimating forest site fertility are compared using different input data. The pixelwise methods are discriminant analysis, based on generalized squared distances, and logistic regression analysis. The results of pixelwise classification are improved either with mode filtering within forest stands or assuming a Markov random field type dependence between pixels. The stand delineation is obtained by using ordinary segmentation techniques. All metrhods are justified by using independent test data.

Аннотация: Soil sampling of 1248 forested sample plots in southern Finland was carried out during 1980-85. pH (in winter), total nitrogen, and ammonium acetate (pH 4.65) extractable P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations were determined from humus layer and surface mineral soil (0-30 cm) samples. Total concentrations of P, K, Ca and Mg were also determined from the humus samples. Only texture was determined from subsoil (65-75 cm) samples.

Аннотация: This study attempts to estimate and to interpret the impact of forest on water circulation in small lowland catchments of the Vistula river basin taking into consideration the climatic, physiographgic and habitat conditions. It uses the finding of the hydrological research conducted between 1966 and 2006 within 46 small catchments with different forest cover, habitat and stand characteristics representative of the majority of larger forest complexes in eastern Poland. The period under study featured variable climatic conditions and marked trends towards a decrease in water resources, as well as changes in the fertility of forest habitats, species and age structure, as well as in stand volume.
