Аннотация: Acid rain is a serious international environmental problem. Scandinavian forests are influenced by acidic precipitation and have been the focus of considerable research on the causes and impacts of atmospheric pollution. This book presents the results of long-term studies (1972-1990) on acid rain in Norwegian forests. This research examined soil chemistry and biology, the impacts of acid rain on tree growth and nutrition, and its influence on ground vegetation, fungi, soil animals, and germination and seeding development and it will be of interest to researchers, and advanced students in ecology, air pollution, forestry, and environmental chemistry as well as to decision makers on environmental issues.

Аннотация: The objective of the Russian-Scandinavian Larch Project is to study the genetics of the four main larch species within Russia, and to make future research on genotype-evironment interaction in other parts of the northern hemisphere possible. The project started in 1994 and the first step, seed collection, is finished now 7 years later. It is a result of co-operation between four different Russian research organisations and two partners in Scandinavia, one in Japan and one in USA.

Аннотация: Cage feeding of deer mice, and red-backed mice, showed a daily maximum seed consumption of lodgepole pine of about 1,000 seeds and of white spruce, of 2,000 seeds. There was no difference in the amount of seed consumed by the two species of mice. Lodgepole pine seed was preferred over white spruce. Meadow voles, radily are lodgepole pine and white spruce seedlings following germination. Red-backed mice also are seedlings but not to the same degree as the meadow voles. The deer mouse was not tested

Аннотация: Irregular seed production is a rather common phenomenon on forest trees, including several species of conifers. Good and poor crops follow each other at intervals. This makes it necessary to store seed of disired species, so that regular supplies are available each year for planting purposes. In order that seed may not lose its germination capacity during storage, suitable conditions must be provided, e.g. low temperature, low relative humidity, etc. . An important factor affecting by the germination capacity of stored seed is the amount of mechanical damage it possesses (e.g. from dewinging, etc.)

Аннотация: Fomes annosus conidia and mycelium were very sensitive to nitrite, germination and growth being completely inhibited by 0.5 per cent sodium nitrite at pH 5.5-6.0. Of nine common Swedish stump fungi, only Coniophora puteana and Stereum sanguinolentum were considerebly less sensitive to nitrite than Fommes annosus.The pH of the medium was shown to influence the toxicity of nitrite to Fommes annosus, maximum toxicity being obtained near pH 4

Аннотация: In this investigation, the effect of three distances: 22, 19 and 13 cm between the water level and the seed bed on Jacobsen apparatus (referred to in the following text as "water distance"), was studied on the germination of 24 samples of fresh and old Scots pine seed. The results showed that in most of the samples there was a tendency for germination percentage to be highest at the shortest water distance used (13 cm), although these differences were significant only in three cases. Also the germination rate was the fastest, at least in the first few days of the test, at 13 cm water distance in several samples. For the practical seed testing work, this study has indicated that it is important to keep the distance between the water level and seed bed on Jacobsen apparatus constant, in order to obtain comparable germination results

Аннотация: In this investigation the effect of the germination periods of 14, 21 and 30 days was studied on the percentage and the rate of germination of Pinus silvestris and Picea abies seed. Samples from areas lying between 50 degrees N and 68 degrees N latitudes were used. Seed with well-developed embryo and endosperm and with high viability, as well as that with reduced viability due to age or due to poor embryo and/or endosperm development was tested. The results showed that in former type of seed, a germination period of 14 days may be adequate. However, in the later type of seed, a longer period (21 or 30 days) may be desirable, so that a sample can attain its maximum germination percentage

Аннотация: Stands of Scots pine along the south-eastern coast of Sweden differ from inland stands at the same latitude as regards frequency of trees with broad crowns and crooked stems. In oder to investigate the nature and extent of the differences, a provenance trial was established with material of coastal and inland origin. The experimental design involved testings at two sites (coastal and inland), at two spacings at each site and with two methods of establishment (sowing and planting). Differences between provenances were established as regards germination, survival, occurrence of prolepsis and some blanching characteristic. Inland pines were less well adapted to coastal conditions than were coastal pines to inland environment. Different methods were demonstrated.

Аннотация: Aged seeds of Scots pine left different eluate spots on the blotter in a germinator after about 24 hours' incubation. Fresh seeds do not give off such eluates. Among the leached substances were found proteins, nucleic acids, amino acids, fats, sugars, etc. The eluate spot are visible on the blotter only after development by simple biochemical methods used in paper chromatography. Possibility of using this eluate-development method as a seed viability test, and other practical aspects, are described.

Аннотация: The present investigation is an attempt to describe further some of the complicated connections between the temperature climate and germinability of pine seeds and simultaneously their changing content of various types of sugar. To limit the ecological variation as far as possible, with the exception of the temperature factor, the studies have been based on material collected from one and the same pine stand. Collections of pine cones were made during three consecutive years, and the local temperatures were taken and recorded at the same time. The study is part of a more extensive investigation into ripening conditions of Scots pine seeds at higher altitudes in northern Sweden.

Аннотация: Cones from a young (24-28 years) and an old stand (120-280 years) of Pinus sylvestris L., originating from Lycksele in north Sweden were examined in the laboratory to establish whether there are biological restrictions on the use of seeds from young stands. The number of cones per ha was approximately 71 000 in the old stand and about 29 000 in the young stand, which corresponded to 4.3 respectively 2.1 kg of filled seeds. Cones from the young stand exceeded cones from the old stand in length, volume and dry weight: consequently the seeds from the young stand were heavier than those from the old stand. There were no differences between the two stands in other properties, such as germination rate and capacity, number of seeds per cone, percentage of empty seeds and extractability. There appears to be no biological reason for restricting cone collection from a young stand of the above age.
