Аннотация: Best practices for mitigating environmental damage from conventional power generation This volume of the Wiley Series in Environmentally Conscious Engineering, Environmentally Conscious Fossil Energy Production, seeks to provide new solutions to one of the grand challenges of this century: supplying energy to a growing population while reducing environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The first five chapters cover extraction and transport of fossil fuels; the last four chapters cover power plants. An international roster of contributors, from the United States, Canada, and the Middle East, deals with the wide variety of challenges posed by converting oil, natural gas, and coal to energy. Chapters include: Environmentally Conscious Petroleum Engineering Carbon Management and Hydrogen Requirements in Oil Sands Environmentally Conscious Coal Mining Maritime Oil Transport and Pollution Prevention Accidental Oil Spills Behavior and Control Geological Sequestration of Greenhouse Gases Clean Coal Technology: Gasification Pathway An Integrated Approach for Carbon Mitigation in the Electric Power Generation Sector Energy and Exergy Analyses of Natural Gas Fired Combined Cycle Power Generation Systems

Аннотация: The present publication is a welcome contribution of the followup to UNCED. By focusing on a specific problem, it avoids the pitfall of undue generalization and provides the basis for fruitful discussion between natural scientists, social scientists, and policymakers. To choose as the area of concertration a particular scale also helped to produce meaningful discussion likely to lead to action. In both the natural and the social sciences, the question of scale is of keyimportance as different types of phenomena occur at different scales and different explanatory laws are formulated at these separate scales. Political structures and procedures also differ widely at national, regional, and global scales. The regional scale poses many problems for all the groups interested in global warming. The regional effects of the increase in greenhouse gases are known with less certainty than the global effects. The suitability of the present regional organizations, established and designed on the basis of other economic and political priorities, to deal with problems of environment and development has to be carefylly evaluated and some adaptations may be necessary. The present publication contains an important review both of these general problems and of specific problems related to freshwater resources and to marine resources. It provides an excellent starting point for further work on these important topics. The organizers and authors are to be congratulated on what has been achieved.

Аннотация: Many papers were presented on symposium based on data estimating of greenhouse gases emissions for 1980-1990 period, the IPCC forecasted that that emission of greenhouse gases could lead to a 1 to 3.5 C in global mean surface ait temperature during the next century. The increase will surpass the cumulative change in global temperature over the past 10,000 years. Emissions of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide, methane and nitrose oxide, result from human activities in the energy sector, land use change and forestry sector, and from industry and waste management.

Аннотация: The symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia has been continued for eight years. The scientists working on atmosphere, biosphere and cryosphere discussed the recearch results mainly obtained in the field studies in Siberia. The discussion was fucused on several topics including the ecological and ecophysiological aspects of the Siberian taiga forest and permafrost, the greenhouse gas flux from/to the wetland and taiga forest, and the soil processes. In some of the presentations, special emphasis was placed on the effects of forest fire on the Siberian terrestrial ecosystems.

Аннотация: The report deals with methane emission. Methane (CH4) is present in soils and atmosphere as a trace gas. Methane is also a "greenhouse" gas, which means that the change of its concentration in the atmosphere will affect the Earth's temperature.

Аннотация: The experiment has shown significant effects of depth to water table on jack pine height growth, and therefore supports the interpretation of site index variations of jack pine. The experiment has served to explain the effect of depth to water table gradients on forest distributiion, as black spruce died on the upper slope of the sandy soil, and jack pine survived. Thus it seems certain that the absence of black spruce on dry sites in southeastern Manitoba is due to its inability to form deep root systems on nutritionally poor soils.

Аннотация: The Project deals with global climate changes, how the activities of man modified climate and global environment. How can we disentangle anthropogenic-induced change from natural response to external forcing mechanisms and internal system dynamics? What are the limits of natural greenhouse gas variation and what are the naturalfeedbacks to the global climate system? What are the important forcing factors that produce climate change on societal time scales? What are the causes for abrupt climatic and environmental events and the rapid transitions between quasi-stable climatic states which ocurr on decadal to century time scales?

Аннотация: Meiosis in PMC of aspen in twigs allowed to develop in greenhouse, was studied and demonstarted by photomicrographs. During the conditions prevailing in the greenhouse the development from pachytene to microspores took plaxce within around 30 hours. Pachytene was shown to be the longest lasting stage followed by metaphase I, diplotene and interphase. The development starts in the base of the catkin and proceeds upwards. Several meiotic stages might simultaneously be found in individual flowers

Interacting stresses on plants in a changing climate
/ NATO Scientific Affairs Division ; ed.: M. B. Jackson, C. R. Black. - Berlin ; Heidelberg ; New-York : Springer, 1993. - 771 p. : ил. - (Series I: Global Environmental Change ; vol. 16). - Subject ind.: p. 757-771. - ISBN 3-540-57263-5. - ISBN 0-387-57263-5 : 88134.00 р.

Аннотация: Books dealing with climatic change are commonplace, as are those concerned with effects of environmental stresses on plants. The present volume distinguishes itself from earlier publications by highlighting several interrelated environmental stresses that are changing in intensity as the climate warms in response to the accumulation of 'greenhouse' gases. The stresses examined at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop upon which this book is based include atmospheric pollutants, flooding and submergence, drought and cold. In future, successful farming or landscape management will ultimately depend on strategies, that offset the effects of these and other environmental constraints, while exploiting more favourable features and e.t.c.
