Аннотация: The paper describes the distribution of acidity in the soil profile, especially in the podzol profile, and gives some data regarding the effect of the storage of the soil samples on acidity, and the differences between the pH-values in water and in KC1. Storage of the samples has generally lowered the acidity, particularly so in strongly podzolized soils. The changes were least in brown earth and in weakly podzolized soil. Research on the distribution of acidity shows that the pH-value first rises (from surface of mineral soil onwards) with increasing depth, reaches a maximum at the lower part of the B-horizon, and thereupon falls, soon to rise to the value which is characteristic of the subsoil in question. In ordinary northern podzol soils, this maximum is found between 25 and 35 cm, and the decrease between 35 and 45 cm. The chemical differentiation of the profile is generally the folowing: the maximum of humus is uppermost, than tha maximum of sesqui-oxides and underneath that of the pH-values. The ph-difference between water and KC1 was least in the B-horizon, and greatest in strongly washed A-horizon and in the subsoil of grass-herb forests.

Аннотация: Seasonal fluctuations of humus pH of three commonly occurring forest soils in Quebec were assessed to determine which of four different methods was best suited for comparisons of pH among sites. Seasonal variations of 1.1 to 1.3 units were observed on all soil types tested. Humus pH was highest in midsummer and decreased as winter approached. Different pH values were obtained from the same time by the different methods used. Reproducibility of pH measurements is briefly discussed.

Аннотация: Total amounts of plant nutrients in biomass, humus and mineral soil were determined in two old Norway spruce ecosystems in central and northern Sweden. Measurements were repeated 1, 4, 10 and 16 years after clearfelling on plots on which slash was retained, removed or burnt. Different analytical methods for plant-available nutrients were used and the relationship between them was calculated.

Аннотация: The book deals with the numerous biological, physical, and chemical processes which continuously go on in the soil in which microbes are involved. Without soil microbes, life on this planet would soon come to a standstill. The soil is a more or less homogeneous system which has resulted from the decomposition of plant and animals remains. The numerous living forms which spend all or part of their life in the soil range from the submicroscopic viruses and phages, through the microscopic bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, algae, and protozoa to the lower animal forms, the worms, insects, and rotifers, many of which can be seen and recognized with the naked eye.This organisms, comprising both the living forms and their dead bodies, as well as the products of their decomposition, such as carbon dioxide and organic acids, interact with rock constituents to give rise to soil. The soil thus gains the caracteristic properties that make it a suitable medium for plant and animal life.

Аннотация: Mycorrhiza-forming species mainly of the genera Amanita, Boletus and others and some litter-decomposing species were employed. For ecological characterisation of the experimental material, most of these species were tested for the ability to produce the extra-cellular enzymes, cellulase, pectinase, proteinase and laccase. The result from experimental series having raw humus as the only nitrogen source indicated that the myccorhiza-forming fungi, like most of the litter-decomposers, could utilise to a very limited extent or not at all the nitrogen bound in the humus. The inoculation of cultures of pine seedlings on gamma-sterilised, N15- labelled raw humus with pure culture suspensions of different mycorrhiza-formers and litter-decomposers influenced to varying degrees both the supply of assimilable nitrogen and plant development.

Аннотация: In the present paper it is shown how Boletus subtomentosus, that normally is a mycorrhiza forming fungus can stimulate the development of pine plants. A physiological strain of this fungus is used which has the ability to decompose litter. The typical mycorrhiza fungus also stimulated the plant growth to a certain extent. However, the stimulating effect ceased when strong fertilization was used or when the light intensity was reduced. Constant illumination resulted in the plants developing well and with good mycorrhiza formation. When the period of illumination was reduced to 16 hours a day the plants developed less vigorously and the mycorrhiza formation was reduced.

Аннотация: Laterally isolated micro-plots were used for studying the recovery and vertical distribution of various sources of 15N-labelled fertilizer nitrogen in the soil beneath a 90 years' old stand of Scots pine. The fate of the added nitrogen was followed by sampling and analysing the field layer vegetation, litter and soil after different time intervals during the growing season 1968 (4 times) and also in spring 1969 (once). Of the calcium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and urea-N added, the amounts recovered at the end of the experiment were 23, 63 and 76 per cent, respectively. Less than ten per cent of the recovered N was in inorganic form. Urea-N showed the lowest mobility of the fertilizers applied, and tended to accumulate in the litter and humus layers.

Аннотация: Morphological studies of mor of different ages were carried out with the purposes of describing and elucidating biological activity on the basis of morphological properties, and deducing the rate of genesis. This site was characterized by a quartz-rich sand deposit, low ground-water table, poor vegetation and orthic podzol. In the morphological analyses the mor was separated into different horizons. Micromorphological studies showed that fungi were very important in the decomposition process. Soil animals were of less significance. The formation of the fermentation horizon was a fast process. After a period of 20 years a ferminatation horizon had developed although it was characterized by a low content of altered organic matter. The formation of a humus-substance horizon was a much slower process.

Аннотация: The water relations in planted seedlings of Pinus sylvestris were measured to find out whether poor water uptake was an important factor affecting the palnting result.Seedlings were planted in the field on six different occasions. The soil was prepared in four ways: (a) Scarified patch, (b) A mound of mineral soil on the scarified patch, (c) A mound of mineral soil on a section of upturned humus, (d) No scarification. Needle conductance, needle water potential and plant water conductance (Gp) were measured on the seedlings during the period after planting (1-4 years). It was found that the planted seedlings suffered from water stress. Gp only being 2-46% of that in established references. Water uptake was reduced for several years after planting. Planting in mounds placed on mineral soil or in scarified patches favoured a high water uptake of the seedlings. The low water uptake of the seedlings after planting may explain the poor reforestation results frequently observed.

Аннотация: The aim of this study is to characterize the sites in Central Finland where Scots pine was found to be suffering from Scleroderris canker. The relationships between damage degree, topography, vegetation, forest site type and soil are investigated. The sites were classified according to the Cajander forest classification system and also numerically, using TWINSPAN analysis based on the ground vegetation. The disease was most sever in depressions and frost pockets. No typical vegetational pattern of forest site type of the severely affected stands could by detected. Most of the stands were growing on medium-coarse, unfertile soil with a rather thick humus layer.
