Аннотация: A study of the response of 40- to 50-year-old balsam fir to four levels of crown release, 1 to 3,3 to 5,5 to 7 feet, and a control, was carried out at Green River, New Brunswick, between 1953 and 1958. The treatment led to increased basal area growth, but the degree of release had relatively little influence on the rate. The relationship of increment to various intrinsic and extrinsic factors was examined and basal area increment was found to be related to initial breast height diameter, crown width and a derived competition factor, but much variation is unexplained. An equation for predicting basal area growth is presented and a discussion of the possible factors contributing to the unexplained variation is given.

Аннотация: This book deals with the recent debate on forest decline and possible climatic changes emphasized the need of growth studies. In the 1980's several studies reported a reduction of forest growth whereas other studies resulted in quite opposite findings. A study conducted under auspecies of the European Forest Institute (EFI) on forest resources in Europe between 1950 and 1990 showed a remarkable increase in growing stock. In 1993 EFI started a follow-up-project on "Growth trends in European Forests", which focused on the evaluation of available data at the European level. This publication presents the results of the project . Implications of these trends concerning possible causes, forest management, and future research needs are discussed.

Аннотация: The purpose of the present study is to test critically the covariation of tree growth and rainfall-tree growth as measured by the thicknesses of growth layers on increment cores. There are two general conclusions. First, the evidence indicates rather clearly that variations in tree frowth follow variations of March-July rainfall from year to year very nearly 100% at the immediate site of the trees. Second, the evidence strongly suggests that changes of internal agreement among the trees and changes of average variation , average departure, and average departure from mean variation can be used as a method to reveal changes in rainfall through the years where amount of rainfall, and hence derived soil moisture, approximately equels that present at the location of the dominant members of the Holman Pass collection

Аннотация: The purpose of this paper is to derive yield tables for beech. The material consists of 39 permanent sample plots in beech stands. The development of top height during the study was used as the basis for deriving height development curves. With the aid of these, individual stands were referred to a certain height quality class, defined as the top height of the stand at a total age of 100 years. Basal area increment was culculated by a function obtained by regression analysis, with the help of the material. The yield tables reproduce the average stand development and yield when site quality class, the initial stand and the thinning programme are given. In individual stands, yield deviates from the table , as a rule. The deviations depend partly on experiment error, e.g. errors in estimating basal area increment, and partly on the influence of factors not taken into account by variables in the increment function.

Аннотация: The report gives simultaneous measurements of leading-shoot length, stem diameter and meteorological factors. The height and stem increment in pines is described during two growing seasons in the field at 67 degree N and during two months in climate chamber (pine and spruce plants). The daily increment rhythm, which was regular during fair weather days, varied during the season. The stem increment of the pines in the field started at almost the same time during the days (at noon and early in the morning during early and late growing seasons respectively).

Аннотация: Data from 29 experimental plots in oak plantations are reported and have been utilized in constructing yield tables. The development of top height in indivudual experimental plots has been made the basis for deriving height development curves. In constructing the yield tables the increment per cent in basal area has been calculated by means of a function obtained from regression analysis of the emperical data. It has assumed that the development of top height follows the derived curves. Special account has been taken of the effect of undergrowth on the oak stands. The content of the fine soil fraction is of great interest. This factor, in combination with site index, has been tested as a variable and in the regression analysis. In all functions it proved to be powerful variable and led to greater precisions in the determination of the increment per cent in basal area. The tables show the average stand development for given site quality, here defined in terms of top height at an age of 100 years and content of the fine soil fraction, initial stand and thinning programme.

Аннотация: The stem volume yield of 20 small stands of larch, mainly Larix sukaczewii Dyl., was studied in Northern Sweden. The stand range was 34-89 years. On the most productive sites trees attain a dominant height of 27 m at age 60 years. Tree height increment is still continuing at age 90 years. The productivity of larch varies widely, depending on site quality. During a 100-year rotation, the total volume yield of larch on medium sites was calculated at 500 m3 ha-1, and at 1000 m3 ha-1 on the most productive sites (both including bark). On the most productive sites, stem volume yield of larch exceeded that of indigenous conifers by 10-25 per cent (excluding bark). On poor, dry, flat or waterlogged sites the yield of larch was inferior to that of indigenous conifers. On high-altutude sites, surprisingly high yields were observed.

Аннотация: At the beginning of the investigation period the total biomass of the pine stands on the ordinary sedge pine mire was 48 tn/ha. The biomass of the mixed stands on the herbrich sedge pine mire was 91 tn/ha, out of which about 60% was from pine. The biomass of the spruce stands on the Vaccinium myrtillus spruce mire was 148 tn/ha. The average annual net increment of the stand biomass was 5.8 tn/ha in the unfertilized pine stands and 6.7 tn/ha in the NPK and micronutrient fertilized one during the six-year investigation period. The corresponding figures in the mixed stand were 7.2 tn/ha and 7.6 tn/ha The net increment of the biomass in the unfertilized spruce stand was 6.9 tn/ha and in the fertilized one 8.4 tn/ha. A considerable proportion of the net increment was lost to the ground as litter in all stands.
