Аннотация: This book presents a comprehensive account of a pre-and postfire study in a South African mountain fynbos ecosystem. The study site at Swartboskloof is one of a group of important longterm sites selected as representative of the world's Mediterranean-type ecosystems. The book addresses the interactions between climate and structural features of the vegetation, with particular emphasis on how these determine the incidence of fire. Special attention is given to the role of fire in determining community boundaries, notably those between shrublands and forest patches, and in governing invasion of fynbos by alien trees and shrubs. Emphasis is placed on comparison with other Mediterranean-type ecosystems.

Аннотация: Fomes annosus conidia and mycelium were very sensitive to nitrite, germination and growth being completely inhibited by 0.5 per cent sodium nitrite at pH 5.5-6.0. Of nine common Swedish stump fungi, only Coniophora puteana and Stereum sanguinolentum were considerebly less sensitive to nitrite than Fommes annosus. The pH of the medium was shown to influence the toxicity of nitrite to Fommes annosus, maximum toxicity being obtained near pH 4

Аннотация: The microbial invasion of unpeeled birch pulpwood during outside storage was studied. It was shown that the wood was invaded by a number of different micro-organisms - especially by fungi. Fungi with a minor wood-destroying capacity were found early in the wood, but later disappeared, being unable to complete with more pronounced wood-destryers. Temperature had a substantial influence on the antagonistic activity of the bacteria on angar as well as in wood

Аннотация: This book is a collection of papers presented at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop. The papers discuss many interactions between plants and fungal and bacterial pathogens, but also provide a comparison with mycorrhizal and symbiotic relationships, and those involving mycoparasites. It is interesting to consider how often it is necessary for cells to survive penetration if microorganisms are to infect and colonize plant tissues. The mechanisms used by plants to resist invasion and by microorganisms to achieve infection are also described. Already biochemical and molecular studies indicate that both fungi and plants utilize gene transcription to effect their responses.
