Аннотация: Scientists of the world are confronted with the task of increasing plant productivity to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding world population for food and fiber without increasing the use of non-renewable energy resources. The availability of nitrogen in a utilizable form is a prerequisite for plant growth. In natural environments a delicate balance is established between the rate of plant growth and the supply of available soil nitrogen. The amount of nitrogen available in the soil is controlled by the rate of acumulation and nitrification of organic nitrogen and by the rate of attrition of nitrogen via leaching or denitrification.

Аннотация: In this study we analyze how the ion concentrations in forest soil solution are determined by hydrological and biogeochemical processes. A dynamic model ACIDIC was developed, including processes common to dynamic soil acidification models. The model treats up to eight interacting layers and simulates soil hydrology, transpiration, root water and nutrient uptake, cation exchange, dissolution and reactions of Al hydroxides in solution, and the formation of carbonic acid and its dissociation products. The paper also deals with the other questiones.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
trees, nutrition, soil ecology, forest ecology

Аннотация: This volume offers a collection of in-depth analyses of the key mechanisms governing forest responses to acidic inputs. Among the mechanisms reviewed here foliage leaching, aluminium, mobilization, mineral weathering, soil organisms, and rhizosphere processes. Researchers and students in soil science, forest ecology and environmental science as well as policy makers and forest managers concerned with assessment of acidic deposition effects will value this concise monograph for its detailed examination of select technical issues and its comprehensive reference sections.

nitrogen mineralization -- leaching -- nitrate

Аннотация: Soil studies were carried out before and after clear felling of an intensively fertilized young spruce plantation on old arable land. Particular attention was devoted to nitrogen mineralisation, nitrification, and leaching. Notable amounts of nitrate in the soil occurred before felling only on plots receiving high doses of ammonium nitrate, after clear felling also on some plots with no or low nitrogen supply. Marked quantities of nitrate nitrogen were observed in the deeper soil layers during fertilizer experiment in plots with high fertilizer additions. The soil reaction indicated an acidification as a result of fertilizer treatment. In a pot experiment with soil from the field experiment the nitrate leaching by percolation was studied.

methods -- control -- accumulation

Аннотация: The distribution of fertilizer nitrogen in soil and needle biomass of an 120-year-old stand of Scots pine was studied over a period of six years. The nitrogen was applied as ammonium nitrate or urea and at rates of 150, 300 and 600 kg N per hectare. The soil investigations showed that at the lowest nitrogen application rate, 21% of the ammonium nitrate and 49% of the urea nitrogen were immobilized in the soil in nonexchangeable form. For the corresponding treatments the losses by leaching were estimated to 30-40% and 0-10%, respectively. The accumulation of fertilizer nitrogen in the needle biomass culminated during the third growing season. Relative to control, the total nitrogen accumulation for the lowest ammonium nitrate and urea application rates then amounted to 174 and 134% respectively. As regards volume growth, the ammonium nitrate was greatky superior to urea at the two lowest nitrogen application rates. The dose of 600 kg N per hectare provids to be over-optimal as far as the ammonium nitrate source of nitrogen was concerned.

phosphorus -- nitrogen -- leaching -- fertilization -- peatlands

Аннотация: The leaching of elements from artificial basins (drained in 1967) in Central Finland was studied. 4 basins were fertilized in 1987 before snowmelt, and 4 basins after snowmelt. 500 kg/ha of a commercial PK-fertilizer and 215 kg/ha of urea were applied. 8 basins were left unfertilized. Extremely high runoff water N-, P-, K-< Ca-, Mg-, Na-, S- and B-concentrations were observed during the snowmelt period. Except for nitrogen, considerable leaching occurred from the basins that were fertilized after snowmelt as well. The distinct decrease in runoff water pH as well as long-term leaching of phosphorus appear to be the most serious environmental effects of the fertilizations.
