Аннотация: In terrestrial ecosystems, soil microorganisms and soil animals are essential for litter degradation, soil formation and availability of nutrients and trace elements. The measurement of biological soil parameters allows a rapid evaluation of the effects of chemical and physical influences due to pollutants or soil management. This book introduces a number of well proved methods for the analysis of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycles. It focuses further on the determination of the number and biomass of microorganisms, algae and animals in the soil. Particular emphasis is placed on the comprehensible and complete description of the experimental procedures.

Аннотация: Total amounts of plant nutrients in biomass, humus and mineral soil were determined in two old Norway spruce ecosystems in central and northern Sweden. Measurements were repeated 1, 4, 10 and 16 years after clearfelling on plots on which slash was retained, removed or burnt. Different analytical methods for plant-available nutrients were used and the relationship between them was calculated.

litter-decomposers -- enzymes -- seedlings

Аннотация: Mycorrhiza-forming species mainly of the genera Amanita, Boletus and others and some litter-decomposing species were employed. For ecological characterisation of the experimental material, most of these species were tested for the ability to produce the extra-cellular enzymes, cellulase, pectinase, proteinase and laccase. The result from experimental series having raw humus as the only nitrogen source indicated that the myccorhiza-forming fungi, like most of the litter-decomposers, could utilise to a very limited extent or not at all the nitrogen bound in the humus. The inoculation of cultures of pine seedlings on gamma-sterilised, N15- labelled raw humus with pure culture suspensions of different mycorrhiza-formers and litter-decomposers influenced to varying degrees both the supply of assimilable nitrogen and plant development.

Аннотация: In the present paper it is shown how Boletus subtomentosus, that normally is a mycorrhiza forming fungus can stimulate the development of pine plants. A physiological strain of this fungus is used which has the ability to decompose litter. The typical mycorrhiza fungus also stimulated the plant growth to a certain extent. However, the stimulating effect ceased when strong fertilization was used or when the light intensity was reduced. Constant illumination resulted in the plants developing well and with good mycorrhiza formation. When the period of illumination was reduced to 16 hours a day the plants developed less vigorously and the mycorrhiza formation was reduced.

Аннотация: Laterally isolated micro-plots were used for studying the recovery and vertical distribution of various sources of 15N-labelled fertilizer nitrogen in the soil beneath a 90 years' old stand of Scots pine. The fate of the added nitrogen was followed by sampling and analysing the field layer vegetation, litter and soil after different time intervals during the growing season 1968 (4 times) and also in spring 1969 (once). Of the calcium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and urea-N added, the amounts recovered at the end of the experiment were 23, 63 and 76 per cent, respectively. Less than ten per cent of the recovered N was in inorganic form. Urea-N showed the lowest mobility of the fertilizers applied, and tended to accumulate in the litter and humus layers.

lime -- soil micromorphology -- soil biology

Аннотация: It is proposed that the long-term impact of lime on soil leads to drastic changes in the type of litter turnover and to a change in the humus form towards calcareous mull. The change towards mull is generally considered to increase the site's productivity. Limimg might have a restrictive influence on production in the short run whereas the long-term impact ia regarded to be the reserve.

Аннотация: The present investigation , the establishment, growth, and development of nitrogen-fixing A. incana and Lupinus spp. were studied on degenerated forest soil in the interior of northern Sweden. Four sites with various site characteristics were included in our study. Effects of adding alder leaves to the soil were also studied. At a later stage, the impact of successfylly established notrogen-fixing plants on the soil will be evaluated.

afforestation -- arable land -- seedling -- soil preparation

Аннотация: Field experiments were carried out at four sites in Sweden to investigate the possibility of establishing downy birch and silver birch on abandoned fields by natural regeneration, direct seeding or both. The effects of six soil preparation methods on the vegetation cover, seedling survival, dominant seedling height and seedling establishment were studied up to four years after seedling emergence.Seedling survival and establishment without preparation, and with rotary cultivation, were close to nil, while the other soil preparation methods generally were more effective. Best seedling survival and establishment were obtained on seedbeds created by removing topsoil or by transposing it by deep ploughing or inversion. Application of peat litter to the seedbed promoted seedling establishment.

Аннотация: At the beginning of the investigation period the total biomass of the pine stands on the ordinary sedge pine mire was 48 tn/ha. The biomass of the mixed stands on the herbrich sedge pine mire was 91 tn/ha, out of which about 60% was from pine. The biomass of the spruce stands on the Vaccinium myrtillus spruce mire was 148 tn/ha. The average annual net increment of the stand biomass was 5.8 tn/ha in the unfertilized pine stands and 6.7 tn/ha in the NPK and micronutrient fertilized one during the six-year investigation period. The corresponding figures in the mixed stand were 7.2 tn/ha and 7.6 tn/ha The net increment of the biomass in the unfertilized spruce stand was 6.9 tn/ha and in the fertilized one 8.4 tn/ha. A considerable proportion of the net increment was lost to the ground as litter in all stands.

Аннотация: A study was made of the fuel complex in 70-year-old lodgepole pine stands in west-central Alberta to facilitate measurement and prediction of weight-and-size distribution of fuel components. Results showed that the weight of the entire fuel complex increased with increasing stand density in the range of 300 to 900 stems per acre (741 to 2,224 stems per hectare) but that the weight of some fuel components decreased in the same stand-density range. Correlations between basal area and expressions of fuel weight were used to construct prediction equations for minor vegetation, forest-floor litter (except humus), slash, the standing tree crop, and the entire fuel complex

Аннотация: The first phase of this study consisted of the development of a computer modeling framework and the use of published information to establish the sector's current role as a net source or a net sink of atmospheric carbon. The framework includes age-dependent carbon sequestration by living forest biomass, net detrital litter fall of carbon to the forest floor, subsequent accumulation and decomposition release an three soil compartments, retention of carbon in manufactured products derived from harvested forest biomass, and burning of forest biomass for energy. There is explicit representation of the role of ecosystem disturbances, such as fire, insect-induced stand mortality, and harvesting (clear-cutting, and slash burning, and partial cuttings), as they affect carbon releases and transfers to the forest floor and to the forest product sector.

Аннотация: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fire damage on pine stands by assessing the diferences between 24 stands in forest districts of Regional Directorate of Warsaw State Forests. Comparisons were made of the amount of lying dead wood, thickness of forest litter, forest-floor cover by herbaceous plants and shrubs, the density of seedlings, natural seeding regeneration, low and high undergrowth, and number and condition of stumps in pine stands of 2nd and 3rd age classes following 5-6 years after understorey fires.
