A chapter has also been added on the use of crawler tractors in logging work because theirb rapid adaptation to the logger's needs indicates the extensive adoption of this form of equipment. This chapter hs been prepared by A. Koroleff, a Russina forest engineer, who has spent much time in studying the use of this kind of equipment on logging operations in the United States. The subject matter has been rearranged, in part, to better meet the needs of the teacher and student and much of the text has been rewritten

Аннотация: To rationalize thinning in young coniferous stands, thinning systems have been developed in the past few years which permit the use of modern harvesters and logging machines. In the spring of 1973 a thinning experiment was established in the forest district Olpe, to examine the influence of largely mechanical cuttings on the increament of young Norway spruce stands. The paper gives a report of this experiment, and mentions the results of similar thinning experiments in the discussion. In conclusion, with regard to these scientific findings and to the thinning rules of the state forestry administrations, recommendations for the treatment of young spruce stands are given

Аннотация: Data for natural stands of 700, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 and 5000 stem per acre are analyzed to show the influence of changing stand structure on both forest growth and cost harvesting. Inferences are drawn regarding the effect of thinning on stand growth and logging cost. It is noted that silvicultural control can be used only to produce more wood but also to produce a forest which is less costly to harvest.

Аннотация: There are two very important problems humanity faces which are tightly bound together: global climate change and anthropogenic pressure. Forests and forest soils represent objects of these impacts. Soils, being a central part of terrestrial ecosystems, reflect not only present environment conditions but also previous ones. Soil is not a living organism, but a medium where organisms live. Transformations of soil differ from plant successions and evolution as well as their buffering capability and tolerance. In turn, the hypothesized global climate change depends mostly on CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and thus on carbon cycling. Soils are regarded to be even a greater sink of CO2 than vegetation (and all living biomass). Soil properties shift affects terrestrial ecosystems in many ways, on a local scale as well as influence to the global climate. There is much data about soil pollution or arable land degradation, but only a few works have been done about forest soils transition under clearcuts or wildfires. This is especially true for soil organic matter behavior, the most intriguing and mysterious feature of any soil which is equally important for local site productivity and global carbon cycle analysis. An assessment of these two human impacts to forest soils, as well as dynamics of their properties, is a matter of great concern at the present time.

Аннотация: Watershed research begun in 1960, with initial emphasis placed upon instrumentation of experimental basins. Marmot Creek Basin was selected to study the hydrology of spruce-fir forest. In late 1962, the first streamgauge was constructed, following installation of five meteorological stations earlier in the year. During 1963, meteorological instrumentation was expanded and additional controls installed on the three main tributary streams. Basin inventory, comprising soil and geophysical survey, habitat-type mapping, timber inventory and improved aerial photography was begun. Groundwater measurements is envisaged.Then a second experimental basin has been chosen. The hydrology of montane trembling aspen forests and associated grasslands will be studied there, through instrumentation emplaced in 1964. Other basins with lodgepole pine cover will be selected in 1964. Meteorological and hydrometric networks are simultaneousley being critically examined and improved. Studies to establish the relationships between various environmental and biological factors have commenced. Land classification methods have been explored. Studies to classify surficial deposits on the basis of relative susceptibility to erosion when disturbed by logging have followed.

Аннотация: A description of logging conditions and of the changes in forest production and techniques is given. During the period, the development of the pulp industry greatly changed the composition of the harvested timber. Logging and transport costs increased during the period of investigation . This may be explained by changes in the book-keeping system, the type of wood produced, the properties of harvested stands and the fluctuations of the value of money etc. An analysis of the influence of these various factors on the costs is presented.

The sample was obtained from interviews with some 2 000 woodlot ownwers. The method of analysis is known as the Automatic Interaction Detector (AID). For a given population, this method can be used to explain the variation in a creterion variable (dependent variables).
