Аннотация: In this study, several alternative phytosanitary treatments for forest tree seeds in general were evaluated and experiments on the long-term storage of acorns were conducted. Seed treatments with low-energy electron beams were carried out on acorns, beechnuts, and seeds of Sitka spruce. This method, the effect of which is restricted to the outer seed parts, is based on the biological effect of ionising radiation and is intended to kill microfungi in the pericarp and testa. The second evaluated phytosanitary measure consisted of the microwave treatment of acorns, which relies on a thermal effect. In addition, the phenomenon of artificially induced frost hardiness of acorns was examined in order to explore the possibility of storing acorns at temperatures lower than the present limit of -3 C.

Аннотация: Fomes annosus conidia and mycelium were very sensitive to nitrite, germination and growth being completely inhibited by 0.5 per cent sodium nitrite at pH 5.5-6.0. Of nine common Swedish stump fungi, only Coniophora puteana and Stereum sanguinolentum were considerebly less sensitive to nitrite than Fommes annosus. The pH of the medium was shown to influence the toxicity of nitrite to Fommes annosus, maximum toxicity being obtained near pH 4

microfungi -- cellulose clearing method -- degradation of wood -- attack

Аннотация: During investigations on deterioration of wood in different situations, a great number of microfungi have been isolated at the laboratory. Most of the isolates have been assayed for cellulolytic activity and wood degradating capability. The aim of these studies was to examine which species are able to degrade wood, their type of attack and to investigate whether any correlations exist between wood degradation and cellulolytic activity on pure cellulose. The results for 160 different species are presented in a table.

Аннотация: The objects of the present investigation were two: 1) to demonstrate the production of cellulase, xylanase and mannanase, enzymes which a priori were assumed to be produced by the wood-degrading species, and 2) to obtain information about the conditions under which these enzymes are produced in order to achieve a better understanding of the mechanisms of wood degradation. No specific studies of the activities of the various enzymes were attemted. The purpose was merely to demonstrate the presence or absence of the various enzymes by the use of different test methods.

microfungi -- wood-degrading species

Аннотация: The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of different culture conditions on the ability of a number of microfungi to degrade various cellulosic substrates and in particular to study the formation of soft rot cavities in various cellulosic fibres. The microfungi employed in the present study were selected to include representatives of different categories with respect to the degradation of birch wood and purified cellulose. The fibre materials were: wood fibres, delignified wood fibres, non-wood lignified fibres and a pure cellulose fibre, viz. cotton. The degradation of cellophane was also studied. Interest was primarily focussed on the "non-cellulolytic" soft rot fungi in order to obtain an explanation of their anomalous behaviour in the degradation of cellulose
