Аннотация: Crown stem measurements were taken periodically on selected trees in plantations of red pine (PINUS RESINOSA AIT.) over the period 17 to 37 years from seed. Spacings were 5x5, 7x7, 10x10, and 14x14 feet; some of these represented the original planting interval and others had been achieved by mechanical thinning at the start of the experiment. Little mortality occurred during the 20 years, and individual crown size tended to stabilize, with smaller crowns occurring with closer spacings. Periodic volume growth per acre was strongly correlated with average foliage weight for the period. Thinning was followed by an immediate but temporary increase in foliage ranged from 0.023 to 0.038 cubic feet. Crown length, width, and weight, once stabilized, did not show good correlation with parameters of individual stem growth which are cumulative. Height to crown continued to increase and was strongly correlated with total volume per acre and with the ratio average height average spacing. Breast-height growth of sample trees appeared to be a function of height to crown and foliage weight.

Аннотация: This study is a first step in the direction of using PDP system to model regular non-catastrophic individual tree mortality. The study demonstrated that such an approach is promising in comparison to the widely used logistic regression approach. Besides better performance, it also has some advantages over the traditional statistical methods.

Аннотация: A study of gypsy moth, population dynamics was carried out over a 7-year period in several areas in northeastern New York. The data were summarized in life tables, stratified by density and sex, and then analyzed by mathematical models. Variation in the survival rates of the instar IV to VI female larvae and the female pupae was the greatest source of variation in density among dense populations. Variation in the survival rates of both instar I to III and IV to VI female larve was most important among sparse populations. Disease was the primary determinant of variation in the survival rate of dense populations of instar IV to VI larvae, while agents other than disease or parasites were most important at this stage among sparse populations. The survival rate of dense populations of the female pupae varied primarily in response to parasites and disease. Variation in the survival rate of the instar I to III larvae was probably primarily a function of variation in the dispertion rate of the newly hatched larvae. A generation model was developed that describes density at the start of a second generation as a function of the environmental variables associated with the above mortality-causing factors. It was tested against an independent body of data with some success.

Аннотация: An attempt was made to gain some indication as to the role of five different "Stressors" in a granulosis of varigated cutworm. In general, it was found that, with the possible exception of ether, none of the test factors (excessive heat, excessive cold, ultraviolet light, abnormal nutrition) sgnificantly enhanced, promoted, or induced granulosis infection in Peridroma larvae. Considerable mortality in the test insects resulted from the action of the test factors themselves, and from other nonvirus causes, such as bacterial infection

Аннотация: The successful use of microorganisms in the control of insect pests depends to a large degree on the thoroughness with which the basic research required for such work is accomplished. The diagnostic service provided by the laboratory of insect pathology constitutes such fundamental research. The laboratory performs a direct service not only to other scientists and specialists but also to farmers and growers in furnishing information relating to insect mortality. Such activity enables the California specialists to be in a position to discover new diseases and afflictions which may eventually be put to practical use in efforts to aid in the control of certain insect pests through the agency of microorganisms

provenance trials -- mortality -- classification into site

Аннотация: By means of results from provenance trials in northern Sweden, a map of severity index for various latitudes and altitudes was drawn up. The severity index is defined as the expected percentage plant mortality rate in the local population during the first 20 years after establishment of the plantation. By combining transfer effects based on data from all trials, a general trend of the transfer effect was calculated. The regression obtained showed that, at constant altitude, each degree of transfer southwards meant an increase of survival of 10.8 percentage units; at constant latitude, every 100 metres of downward transfer implied an increase in survival of 3.0 percentage units.Optimum transfer is defined as the transfer giving maximum volume yield, which equals 70-80 per cent survival.

Аннотация: The aim of the study was to identify factors with a potential to cause major population change and factors that may explain the differences in population dynamics between outbreak and non-outbreak areas. In particular, outbreak patterns, life history variation, and mortality factors were investigated. Based on results, hypotheses on the population processes were developed as a basis for further stidies and for evaluating population management options.

simulation models -- diameter distribution -- Weibull function -- thinning reaction

Аннотация: The study presents a growth and yield prediction model for a P. kesiya stand by diameter classes. The material consists of temporary sample plots taken from a plantation inventory of permanent sample plots established in commercial compartments and of an espacement trial. The mean basal area of the stand, variance and skewness of thr diameter distribution are predicted. From these variables the parameters of the Weibull function are derived. Site class is assumed to be known or is calculated from measured information. Mortality is also predicted by estimating the number and mean size of dead trees. Thinnings are defined by the number of trees removed and by their relative size. The minimum information is needed for the prediction is planting density, site class as well as the times and removals of thinnings. The used thinning reaction model needs refinement and further studies with annually measured thinning trial material. However, conclusions drawn from the simulations do not substantially change even with the use of a more accurate model.

Аннотация: Several Scots pine stands damaged by G. abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet were found in eastern Lapland during the years 1988-1989. The most severely damaged area 3.6 ha in size was a stand in Rikkilehto, Naruska, Salla. The conditiion of the trees quality of the site and the history as well as the significance of G. abietina in Rikkileho prior to 1991 is reported. The most important damage agent was G. abietina, but also pine shoot beetles (Tomicus spp.) had caused shoot mortality. About 60 % of the Scots pines were dead. Their radial increment had started to decrease in 1960's, and continued to do so in the 1970's and 1980's. The most sever damage was concentrated at the very bottom of the area. The pH of the humus correlated positively with the damage degree.

Аннотация: The data of pheromone traps were used to determine the seasonal dynamics (number of generations and time of swarming) of I. typographus populations. The use of GIS based on tools enabled a better understanding of spatial patterns of I. typographus distribution and dynamics in mountain conditions. The use of this data for risk assessment is limited, due to a high dependence of captures on various environmental factors, mainly: altitude, slope exposition, stand composition and age of the host tree. The environmental effect of the traps is low, regarding both captures of non-target insects and pheromone-induced tree mortality.

Аннотация: The first phase of this study consisted of the development of a computer modeling framework and the use of published information to establish the sector's current role as a net source or a net sink of atmospheric carbon. The framework includes age-dependent carbon sequestration by living forest biomass, net detrital litter fall of carbon to the forest floor, subsequent accumulation and decomposition release an three soil compartments, retention of carbon in manufactured products derived from harvested forest biomass, and burning of forest biomass for energy. There is explicit representation of the role of ecosystem disturbances, such as fire, insect-induced stand mortality, and harvesting (clear-cutting, and slash burning, and partial cuttings), as they affect carbon releases and transfers to the forest floor and to the forest product sector.

Аннотация: These studies indicates that the two predator groups: small mustelids and avian predators, are not able to generate negative-feedback loops affecting endogenous cycles in root vole polulations. However, these studies do provide some new explanations for the mechanisms behind vole cycles: firsrly, that vole survival depend on body mass during each phase of the population cycle, and secondly, that the highest vole mortality during the downward phase of the population cycle occurs in late winter. These two relationships suggest that the quality of food resources may be the factor resposible for root vole cycles in the studied population. this hypothesis now needs to be empirically varified in future studies.
