Аннотация: This book is the most influential book in agricultural science. It will be of value to students and research workers in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and soil science, and to others concerned with the maintenance of soil fertility and appropriate use of the land. The book emphasizes the quantitative effects of soil and climate on the growth of farm crops, forest crops and natural vegetation. It also takes into account current concern with problems of heavy metal and nitrate pollution.

heat -- sterilized seeds -- incubation

Аннотация: Soil was placed in large tubes, and after these had been heated in an autoclave and inoculated with pure cultures of selected organisms, sterilized seeds of maize or timothy in some of the tubes while others remained unplanted. After the plants had grown for periods varying from several days to a few months, the soil was removed from both the planted and the unplanted tubes, dilute infusions were plated, and colonies were counted after incubation. With few exceptions the soil in which plants growing contained a larger number of organisms than did the unplanted soil. The organisms used were in every case those known to be active in changing nitrogen from one form to another. The conclusion is drawn that at least some crop plants produce a condition in the soil surrounding their roots which favors the growth of certain microorganisms that consume nitrate nitrogen, thus accounting for the disappearance of nitrate nitrogen not absorbed by the plants

methods -- sampling -- incubation experiments

Аннотация: Incubation experiments were perfomed on samples from horizons of middle Swedish podzol profiles, stored under aerobic conditions at room temperature for up to two and a half years. More than one-third of the organic matter in the mor sample from a good site disapeared during two years' incubation at room temperture. Twenty-four to twenty-six per cent of its nitrogen content was simultaneously mineralised, the largest part as ammonia. The loss of organic matter was somewhat lower in samples from three poor sites (between 20 and 30 per cent) and the release of nitrogen was also lower (12 to 17 per cent). Both the breakdown and the release of nitrogen were generally decreased nitrogen lelease in mor samples (often to nil) but increased release in B horizon samples. Liming also increased nitrate formation

old stands -- litter -- humus layers

Аннотация: Laterally isolated micro-plots were used for studying the recovery and vertical distribution of various sources of 15N-labelled fertilizer nitrogen in the soil beneath a 90 years' old stand of Scots pine. The fate of the added nitrogen was followed by sampling and analysing the field layer vegetation, litter and soil after different time intervals during the growing season 1968 (4 times) and also in spring 1969 (once). Of the calcium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and urea-N added, the amounts recovered at the end of the experiment were 23, 63 and 76 per cent, respectively. Less than ten per cent of the recovered N was in inorganic form. Urea-N showed the lowest mobility of the fertilizers applied, and tended to accumulate in the litter and humus layers.

nitrogen mineralization -- leaching -- nitrate

Аннотация: Soil studies were carried out before and after clear felling of an intensively fertilized young spruce plantation on old arable land. Particular attention was devoted to nitrogen mineralisation, nitrification, and leaching. Notable amounts of nitrate in the soil occurred before felling only on plots receiving high doses of ammonium nitrate, after clear felling also on some plots with no or low nitrogen supply. Marked quantities of nitrate nitrogen were observed in the deeper soil layers during fertilizer experiment in plots with high fertilizer additions. The soil reaction indicated an acidification as a result of fertilizer treatment. In a pot experiment with soil from the field experiment the nitrate leaching by percolation was studied.

experimental sites -- forestry -- methods

Аннотация: The aim of this study was to assess the effects on the abundance of enchytraeids and microarthropods from: 1) different dosages of ammonium nitrate; 2) ammonium nitrate at the most commonly used dose in practical forestry at different times after fertilization; and 3) urea in the dose used in practical forestry.

methods -- control -- accumulation

Аннотация: The distribution of fertilizer nitrogen in soil and needle biomass of an 120-year-old stand of Scots pine was studied over a period of six years. The nitrogen was applied as ammonium nitrate or urea and at rates of 150, 300 and 600 kg N per hectare. The soil investigations showed that at the lowest nitrogen application rate, 21% of the ammonium nitrate and 49% of the urea nitrogen were immobilized in the soil in nonexchangeable form. For the corresponding treatments the losses by leaching were estimated to 30-40% and 0-10%, respectively. The accumulation of fertilizer nitrogen in the needle biomass culminated during the third growing season. Relative to control, the total nitrogen accumulation for the lowest ammonium nitrate and urea application rates then amounted to 174 and 134% respectively. As regards volume growth, the ammonium nitrate was greatky superior to urea at the two lowest nitrogen application rates. The dose of 600 kg N per hectare provids to be over-optimal as far as the ammonium nitrate source of nitrogen was concerned.

Partitioning of atmospheric nitrogen under long-term reduced atmospheric deposition conditions in a Norway spruce forest ecosystem
[Текст] : научное издание / Z. Feng. - Gottingen : Universitatsverlag Gottinger, 2010. - 98 с. : il. - (Gottinger Forstwissenschaften, ISSN 1867-6731 ; bd.4). - Библиогр.: с. 87-96. - ISBN 978-3-941875-81-4 : 30.00 р.

Аннотация: IThe results indicated that the stability of atmospheric N retained in the soil increases with soil depth. Atmospheric ammonium retained in the most upper mineral soil layer is more stable than atmospheric nitrate under ambient atmospheric N deposition. Long-term reduced atmospheric N deposition increases mainly the stability of atmospheric nitrate retained in the most upper mineral soil layer.
