Аннотация: The work presented considers whole plant aspects of the effects of non-nutrient metals on Picea abies seedlings. All work was carried out using seedlings grown in nutrient solutions under controlled conditions. The investigation concentrated on the effect of the metals, Al, Pb, Hg and CH3Hg. The distribution of metals between apoplast and symplast was determined using 109Cd. The aim of study was to develop a model of the effect of these metals on Picea abies in terms of the whole plant, and to assess the relevance of these metals as a soil-mediated stress in forest ecosystems.

Аннотация: The book deals with the various aspects of nutrition of forest plantations at the basic and applied levels, to be necessary for two important reasons. First, the science and management of forest tree nutrition in its many aspects (spanning soil science, tree physiology and silviculture and ecology) has advanced rapidly over the last 15 years. It is no longer possible for any one worker to have expert knowledge in the full range of topics encompassed in tree nutrition. Yet many, if not most, of these topics are highly complementary. It is important that scientists, advanced students and forest managers seeking rewarding avenues of research and management in increasing plantation productivity, be well aware of concepts and recent developments in these related fields. It is essential that they address their studies and management decisions on a comprehensive background knowlwdge of all the processes which influence productivity. The second major reason relates to the need for increased forest productivity and importance of nutrient management of forest plantations in this.

Аннотация: In this study we analyze how the ion concentrations in forest soil solution are determined by hydrological and biogeochemical processes. A dynamic model ACIDIC was developed, including processes common to dynamic soil acidification models. The model treats up to eight interacting layers and simulates soil hydrology, transpiration, root water and nutrient uptake, cation exchange, dissolution and reactions of Al hydroxides in solution, and the formation of carbonic acid and its dissociation products. The paper also deals with the other questiones.

Аннотация: Effects of fertilisation treatments (amounts and composition) on needle concentrations of micronutrients (boron, copper, iron, manganese and zinc), were studied in a long-term fertilisation experiment with young Norway spruce in Central Sweden. Stored current-year's needles (1967-1989), and material from a biomass sampling in 1989, were used to determine changes in micronutrient status with stand development, and to estimate total amounts of micronutrients, in all aboveground organs for a wide range of nutrient regimes and stand productivities. Fertilisation resulted in a wide range of growth rates: the most optimal treatments grew more than three times as fast as the control stands.

Аннотация: Long-term field experiments are described, in which nitrogen and other plant nutrients were added regularly to young Scots pine stands at two sites in Sweden, Lisselbo (1969-1988) and Norrliden (1971-1989; some treatments still in progress). A main aim was to establish a range of needle nitrogen concentration levels, as stable as possible, and to study the effects of these and of other factors (other added nutrients, soil acidity changes, irrigation) in tree growth and tree nutrient status. The importance of long-term field experiments in the study of urgent environmental problems, such as nitrogen saturation and soil acidification, is discussed.

Аннотация: This book presents a summary and synthesis of two decades of research on biogeochemical cycling and related processes in Walker Branch Watershed, a mixed deciduous watershed near Oak, Ridge,Tennessee, which is one of only a few long-term, intensive ecosystem studies in the United Ststes aimed at the quantification of land-water interactions in a forested landscape. The book pulls together for the first time results from this study in the areas of forest meteorology, atmospheric deposition, hydrology, carbon dynamics and productivity, terrestrial nutrient cycling, stream chemistry and ecology, and mathematical modelling. The data sets obtained allow extrapolation to eastern deciduous forests in general and provide scientists and environmental managers with baselines against which future changes in forest ecosystem composition and behavior may be assessed. Researchers and professionals in environmental sciences will be interested how these results compare and contrast with those of other major watershed studies.

Аннотация: An experiment was made with grafts of four different clones of Scots pine planted in 1963 in poor sandy soil, with two different spacings and with and without an annual supply of fertilizers from 1964 onwards. The nutrient status of the pines was followed by foliar analysis of needles sampled every autumn. Measurements of a great number of traits were made in 1967 and 1969 and subsequent statistical anlyses showed that both clones and treatment had significant effects on tree properties. Fertilizer strongly affected many properties, such as diameter, branch length, and diameter, cone setting and needle length.

Аннотация: The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of mineral nutrition on frost hardiness. Frost hardiness in Scots pine with different concentrations of mineral nutrients in the needles was determined during winter by different freezing treatments. For the determinations, needles from a fertiliser experiment in central Sweden were used. The main effect of fertilisation on nutrient concentrations in the needle was on nitrogen, which showed a marked responce to treatment. Frost hardiness determinations were made by measuring the leakage of electrolytes from the needles. With freezing treatmen ts that caused heavy damage, there was a maximum hardiness at nitrogen concentrations of between 1.3 to 1.8 % dw, whilst with moderate damage, no such maximum could be detected. In this case, a tendency towards decreasing hardiness with incresing nitrogen concentration was observed.

Аннотация: In peatland forestry, fertilization is often needed to reach a good yield. Phosphorus and potassium are mainly used, but on nutrient poor fens and bogs nitrogen also has to be added. These fertilizers affect the environment and thereby influence the runoff waters. The aim of this investigation were to determine the concentrations of fertilizer compounds in runoff water downstream from the fertilized mires and to calculate the losses of applied fertilizers. Consequences on pH and biota, primarily fish, from increased concentrations of fertlizers in the runoff waters were to be investigated

Аннотация: Genetic variation in the physiological characteristics and biomass accumulation was studied in both field and laboratory conditions. Variation in the growth characteristics, foliar nutrient concentration, phyllode anatomy and stomatal frequency was analyzed in 16 different origins under field conditions in Central Thailand. Family variation and heritability of growth and flowering frequency were calculated using 20 open-pollinated families at the age of 28 months. The effect of environmental factors on diameter growth in different provenances is also discussed. Under laboratory conditions, such physiological characteristics as transpiration rate, leaf conductance and leaf water potential were measured at varying soil moisture conditions. The responses of photosynthesis, photorespiration and dark respiration as well as the CO2 compensation point to temperature and irradiance were also investigated. All physiological characteristics indicated differences among provenances. An attempt was made to relate the results obtained in the laboratory to the growth performance in the field. Recommendations on provenance selection for the planting of A.mangium in Thailand are also given.
