Аннотация: This book summarizes current knowledge on the boreal forest of North America, with some reference to the boreal regions of Eurasia. It utilizes the technique of ecosystem analysis - a research tool useful in the study of ecology, forestry, resource management, protection of the environment, and preservation of natural resources. Its chapters discuss the history of the boreal vegetation since the glacial period, soils and climate of boreal regions, the plant communities of various regions, and the utilization and management of the boreal ecosystem. The book also discusses the terms of physiology and biochemistry, climatology, soil science, microbiology, plant nutrition, geology, and hydrology. It will be useful to students in biology and ecology, forestry researchers, ecologists, plant physiologists, soil scientists, agronomists, geneticists, and climatologists

Аннотация: The book deals with the genus PINUS, its biology their origin and the development, their chemical composition, physiological processes. Certain groups of chemical substances (polythenols, terpens) have been studied extensively' others, such as fats, are still known only sporadically. Alkoloids have been discovered in some pines only recently. Some physiological processes, such as mineral nutrition, have been investigated more thoroughly than others, for example, transpiration

Аннотация: The book deals with the various aspects of nutrition of forest plantations at the basic and applied levels, to be necessary for two important reasons. First, the science and management of forest tree nutrition in its many aspects (spanning soil science, tree physiology and silviculture and ecology) has advanced rapidly over the last 15 years. It is no longer possible for any one worker to have expert knowledge in the full range of topics encompassed in tree nutrition. Yet many, if not most, of these topics are highly complementary. It is important that scientists, advanced students and forest managers seeking rewarding avenues of research and management in increasing plantation productivity, be well aware of concepts and recent developments in these related fields. It is essential that they address their studies and management decisions on a comprehensive background knowlwdge of all the processes which influence productivity. The second major reason relates to the need for increased forest productivity and importance of nutrient management of forest plantations in this.

Аннотация: This book is the most influential book in agricultural science. It will be of value to students and research workers in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and soil science, and to others concerned with the maintenance of soil fertility and appropriate use of the land. The book emphasizes the quantitative effects of soil and climate on the growth of farm crops, forest crops and natural vegetation. It also takes into account current concern with problems of heavy metal and nitrate pollution.

Аннотация: Acid rain is a serious international environmental problem. Scandinavian forests are influenced by acidic precipitation and have been the focus of considerable research on the causes and impacts of atmospheric pollution. This book presents the results of long-term studies (1972-1990) on acid rain in Norwegian forests. This research examined soil chemistry and biology, the impacts of acid rain on tree growth and nutrition, and its influence on ground vegetation, fungi, soil animals, and germination and seeding development and it will be of interest to researchers, and advanced students in ecology, air pollution, forestry, and environmental chemistry as well as to decision makers on environmental issues.

Аннотация: The USDA Forest Service along with various cooperators has initiated Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) in New England to assess the condition and stressors of region's forests, to analyze changes in these data over time, and to identify any relationships between forest condition and stressors. A major component of FHM in New England is 263 permanent plots located across the region on which growth efficiency, foliar condition and nutrition, soil nutrition, and landscape characteristics will be measured and reported annually. This publication describes the forest resources of New England and discusses major influences-insects and pathogens, climate and weather, and atmospheric deposition and pollution.

Аннотация: Effects of fertilisation treatments (amounts and composition) on needle concentrations of micronutrients (boron, copper, iron, manganese and zinc), were studied in a long-term fertilisation experiment with young Norway spruce in Central Sweden. Stored current-year's needles (1967-1989), and material from a biomass sampling in 1989, were used to determine changes in micronutrient status with stand development, and to estimate total amounts of micronutrients, in all aboveground organs for a wide range of nutrient regimes and stand productivities. Fertilisation resulted in a wide range of growth rates: the most optimal treatments grew more than three times as fast as the control stands.

Аннотация: Long-term field experiments are described, in which nitrogen and other plant nutrients were added regularly to young Scots pine stands at two sites in Sweden, Lisselbo (1969-1988) and Norrliden (1971-1989; some treatments still in progress). A main aim was to establish a range of needle nitrogen concentration levels, as stable as possible, and to study the effects of these and of other factors (other added nutrients, soil acidity changes, irrigation) in tree growth and tree nutrient status. The importance of long-term field experiments in the study of urgent environmental problems, such as nitrogen saturation and soil acidification, is discussed.

Аннотация: An attempt was made to gain some indication as to the role of five different "Stressors" in a granulosis of varigated cutworm. In general, it was found that, with the possible exception of ether, none of the test factors (excessive heat, excessive cold, ultraviolet light, abnormal nutrition) sgnificantly enhanced, promoted, or induced granulosis infection in Peridroma larvae. Considerable mortality in the test insects resulted from the action of the test factors themselves, and from other nonvirus causes, such as bacterial infection
