Аннотация: The overwhelming focus in this volume of the treatise is on linear waves in homogeneous and stratified lakes on the rotating Earth. It comprises 12 chapters, starting with rotating linear shallow-water waves and demonstrating their classification into gravity and Rossby waves for homogeneous and stratified water bodies. This leads naturally to the analysis of gravity waves in unbounded, semi-bounded and bounded domains of constant depth: Kelvin, inertial and Poincaré waves, reflection of such waves at the end of a gulf and their description in sealed basins as so-called ‘inertial waves proper’. The particular application to gravity waves in circular and elliptical basins of constant depth then builds further confidence towards the treatment of barotropic and baroclinic basin wide wave dynamics affected by the rotation of the Earth. The classical analytical approach to the baroclinic motion in lakes is done using the two layer approximation. Recent observations have focused on higher order baroclinicity, a topic dealt with in two chapters. Whole lake responses are illustrated in barotropic and baroclinic wave analyses in Lake Onega and Lake Lugano, respectively, with detailed comparisons of field data. The final four chapters are then devoted to a detailed presentation of topographic Rossby waves and the generalized Chrystal equations and their identification by field observations.

Аннотация: Through analyses, experimental results, and worked-out numerical examples, Microscale and Nanoscale Heat Transfer: Fundamentals and Engineering Applications explores the methods and observations of thermophysical phenomena in size-affected domains. Compiling the most relevant findings from the literature, along with results from their own research activities, the authors provide a useful treatise on the principal concepts and practical design engineering aspects of heat transfer. The book discusses in detail various modern engineering applications, such as microchannel heat sinks, micro heat exchangers, and micro heat pipes. It covers methods that range from discrete computation to optical measurement techniques for microscale applications. The authors also present the fundamentals of nanoscale thermal phenomena in fluids. The text concludes with an entire chapter devoted to numerical examples of microscale conduction, convective heat transfer, and radiation as well as nanoscale thermal phenomena. Drawing on their hands-on experience, the authors shed light on the differences to consider while developing engineering designs related to micro- and nanoscale systems.

Аннотация: Solar radiation was measured during three months in the summer of 1961 by means of Bellani pyranometers below the canopy of three balsam fir stands, one unthinned and two recently thinned, in Quebec. Observations were made at three randomly selected stations representing average values at each plot. Radiation available below canopy was related to physical dimensions of stands. The average solar radiation beneath fir canopies showed values of 6,8, and 10 per cent of that in the open for stands of 7,600, 5,900, and 4,489 inches of stem density, respectively. Variations in the amount of solar radiation in the open did not change the average percentage of open radiation in the stands. However, with increasing amounts of radiation in the open the scatter of values around the mean percentage of open radiation decreased. It was estimated that thinnings that removed 12 and 36 per cent of the original stand basal area had the immediate effect of increasing the radiation intensity by 25 and 50 per cent.

Аннотация: All management of woodlands and forests depends on estimates and measurements, i.e. on the evaluation of numerical data. The evaluation of the results of observations, estimates and measurements provides a basis for the practical experience which is of particular importance to foresters. In this book, the methods of mathematical statistics and biometrics which are of most importance to forestry, and other fields related to forestry, are explained with the aid of a large number of practical examples. As biometric problems are often influenced by the concepts of economics the author has included a brief discussion of some methods of economic statistics. This book is intended for students, practical workers and researchers.

Аннотация: The objectives of the 1991 FHM field season in the Northeast were to: (1) expand the permanent plot network to include three Mid-Atlantic States; (2) correct problems encountered in 1990 field season; and (3) collect second-year observations on crown-rating data for the six New England States. All of these objectives were met satisfactorily. While it is too early to make reliable assessments of change, the 1991 data support the 1990 contention that there is no evidence of wide-spread decline (as evidenced by tree crown symptoms) in any tree species in the included states. Current plans are to continue monitoing the established plots and eventually add additional plots in order states so that we can continue to provide timely, accurate assessments of forest health in the Northeast.

Аннотация: Researchers with the Northeastern Forest Health Monitoring program visited 256 plots in 1992, collecting data from nearly 8,000 trees in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersy, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. There continues to be no evidence of large, regional-scale declines in the health of forest ecosystems as determined by observations of visual crown indicators on trees, e.g., crown dieback, crown density, and foliage transparency. Several individual species (eastern hemlock, northern white-cedar, Americal beech) show slight evidence of decline in one or more visual crown indicators. Some of this decline is attributed to known cases of disease/pest incidence, e.g., outbreakes of beech bark disease and defoliation by the hemlock looper. Evidence of ozone damage was noted on 28 percent of 39 plots where ozone-sensitive plants were surveyed. Soil sampling was implemented on 50 plots in New England, with plants to cover all plots brginning in 1994.Surveys of off-plot insects and pathogens also showed no evidence of regional-scale decline of the forest resource in the Northeastern United States.

Аннотация: Field observations and objective data from "hidden-log" and other study situations, relating to attack flight behaviour of the ambrosia beetle, Trypodendron, lead to the conclusion that beetles are guided to attack by odours from logs. They indicate, also, that when searching for logs, beetles fly against the wind until they are near a source of attraction and then alight and continue their search by crawling. They suggest, furthermore, that stimuli different from those guiding beetles to logs are involved in initiation of burrowing activity. Attractiveness may differ markedly in logs similar in many other respects and may change greatly during a flight season; that of heavily attacked logs decreases while that of lightly- or non-attacked logs may remain low or increase considerably.

Аннотация: A research programme in New Brunswick coordinating the use of radar, specially-instrumented aircraft, and observations from platforms extending above the forest canopy has established the massive scale and regularity of evening take-off flights by spruce budworm moth, Choristoneura fumiferena, and of subsequent nocturnal dispersal at levels high above the ground. A night-viewing telescope showed moths taking off from the tree crowns up until 2330 h, 2.5 h after sunset, while radar dot echoes of uniform strength and size began to appear each night at about the same time. Direct identification of radar echoes was provided by simultaneous catches of budworm moths taken in insect-collecting nets on Cessna 185 aircraft. Moths collected during emigration, displacement, and immigration contained a high proportion of egg-carrying females.

Аннотация: The subfamily Ceratopogoninae (sensu Wirth, 1965a) is probably a natural (monophyletic) group but includes both blood sucking forms (Culicoidini) and predators on small insects. The insectivorous forms consist of a diversified array of six tribes and many genera represented in moist habitats throughout the world and especially abundant at lake margins. An attempt is made throughout to view the phenomena in a phylogenetic context.

Аннотация: Needle analysis studies were presented to supplement the growth analysis of combined green-pruning and nitrogen-fertilizing on Norway spruce (Picea abies) by Kramer. The experiment included the following variations: unpruned-unfertilized, pruned-unfertilized, unpruned-fertilized and pruned-fertilized. Several different development tendencies differenciated from the needle analysis: 1. A general production increase in all plots due to thinning by rows and cleaning. 2. Results of fertlizing. 3. Results of pruning. 4. Interaction, espacially between 1. and 2. 5.General observations were made for the interpretation and the method of the needle analysis which in part add to, or contradict the present level of knowledge, experiences and hypothesis.

Аннотация: The available observations upon the behavior of streams in USA and abroad have established the following facts: 1.The total discharge of large rivers depends upon climate, precipitation, and evaporation. 2. The regularity of flow of rivers and streams throughout the year depends upon the storage capacity of the watershed, which feeds the stored water to the streams during the summer through underground seepage and by springs. In winter the rivers are fed directly by precipitation, which reaches them chiefly as surface run-off. 3. The forests play an important part, especially on impermeable soils, of forest cover on the watersheds.4. Floods which are produced by exceptional meteorological conditions can not be prevented by forests, but without their mitigating influence the floods are more servere and destructive
