Аннотация: In this book a global shape model is developed and applied to the analysis of real pictures acquired with a visible light camera under varying conditions of optical degradation. Computational feasibility of the algorithms derived from this model is achieved by analytical means. The aim is to develop methods for image understanding based on structured restoration, for example, automatic detection of abnormalities. We also want to find the limits of applicability of the algorithms. This is done by making the optical degradations more and more severe until the algorithms no longer succeed in their task. This computer experiment in pattern theory is one of several. The others, LEAVES, X-RAYS, and RANGE, are described elsewhere. This book is suitable for an advanced undergraduate or graduate seminar in Pattern Theory (or Pattern Recognition), or as an accompanying book for Applied Probability, Computer Vision, or Pattern Recognition.

Аннотация: Dynamical Models in Biology offers an introduction to moderm mathematical biology. This book provides a short introduction to modern mathematical methods in modeling dynamical phenomena and treats the broad topics of population dynamics, epidemialogy, evolution, immunology, morphogenesis, and pattern formation. Primary employing differential equations, the authors presents accessible descriptions of difficult mathematical models. Recent mathematical results are included, but the author's presentation gives intuitive meaning to all the main formulae. Besides mathematicians who want to get acquainted with this relatively new field of applications, this book is useful for physicians, biologists, agricultural engineers, and environmentalists.

Topics covered include important ecological problems such as the limits to primary production and biomass accumulation, biotic regulation of energy flow and biogeochemistry, the relatioships between species diversity and stability, variations in biogeochemical behavior over time, and the effect of the weathering-erosion interaction on productivity. According to the authors, a carefully defined and documented case history provides, at this stage of evolution of ecosystem science, the best means for determining the principles of ecosystem structure and function. In addition, from a holistic standpoint, such a case history enables ecologically sound programs of landscape management to be developed

Аннотация: The author has studied the meiosis in the pollen mother cells (PMC) and the pollen formation of Larix decidua Mill. (European larch), L.leptolepis (Sieb et Zucc.) Gord. (Japanese larch) and L. sibirica Ledb. (Siberian larch). Special emphasis was paid to the pattern of development and its implications for pollen formation. Furthermore the possibilities of inducing waxy or waxy-resembling pollen grains were investigated.

For many species, these data represent the first such measurement and an exact interpretation is difficult. Аннотация: Waterflow patterns of Southeast Alaska salmon streams are characterized by marked fluctuation in flow and recurring fall floods. A low stage in the dead of winter while precipitation is stored as snow, a considerable spring run-off that is quite stable until the snow is dissipated, and summer and fall flows fluctuating with rainfall seems to be the typical pattern. Extreme low water follows rainless periods in summer. On streams having no lakes to exert a stabilizing influence, the sustained heavy rainfalls of autumn cause violent floods.

Аннотация: The flight periods of bark beetles and the insect attack on pine logs, felled at intervals of 20 days from January to June, were studied by using window traps and by marking fresh entrance holes in the logs followed by autumn inspection. The periods of flight and attack had similar patterns. Blastophagus piniperda and B. minor, as well as several other bark beetle species, had relatively short periods of flight and attack, while especially Pityogenes chalcigraphus had a long flight period with less accentuated peak. Trypodendron lineatum had a flight pattern with one early and one late peak.

Аннотация: Some applications of the isozyme technique for studies in seed orchards are discussed. The basis of these studies is the opportunity to use clones in the seed orchards which are isozymetically distinct from the others. If a clone in one locus carries one or two alleles unique or rare to the orchard, it may then be possible to trace the contribution of this particular clone to the seed formation. The use of this method in studies on the net effect of open pollination in a seed orchard is pointed out. In the absence of such unique alleles for the estimation of the pollination situation, another method is suggested. This method can be made use of by collecting open-pollinated seeds from a clone and counting plants from these which, by means of the isozyme pattern, show a documented cross-pollination. In this way it is possible to obtain information on the occurrence of selfing. Checking of the isolation technique for controlled crosses is also possible with the isozyme technique.
