Аннотация: In spite of increased attention to wetland conservation folowing the Ramsar Convention on wetland of International Importance, the peat-harvesting industry in many countries is still intersted in the further exploitation of peatlands. In some of the most industrialised countries, all natural peatlands have already been lost. In others, only small areas of native peatland remain. Among other possible uses for cut-over peatlands, peatland restoration is one: there is an urgent need for the development of measures for regenerating peat-accumulation processes. The redevelopment of a fen or bog peat landscape is a long-term process, which will probably take centuries. The restoration of any peatland may therefore be considered successful if the outcome is development and growth of plant communities able to produce peat.

Аннотация: Seedling of Pinus sylvestris, grown in low humified peat, were exposed to different soil water potentials and soil temperatures. The water potential and temperature were controlled by the use of a semi-permeable membrane system, and the seedlings were placed in a growth chamber during the experiments. Needle water potential, needle conductance and plant water conductance were measured on the seedlings. When the soil water potential decreased to-0.1 MPa, the needle conductance decreased to about 25% of the maximum whereas the plant water conductance decreased even more. The results are discussed in relation to resistance to water flow in the soil and in the root-soil interface. Soil temperature did not markedly change the relative responce of needle conductance and plant water conductance and soil water potential. Water uptake was considerably lower at lower soil temperatures.

Аннотация: Field experiments were carried out at four sites in Sweden to investigate the possibility of establishing downy birch and silver birch on abandoned fields by natural regeneration, direct seeding or both. The effects of six soil preparation methods on the vegetation cover, seedling survival, dominant seedling height and seedling establishment were studied up to four years after seedling emergence.Seedling survival and establishment without preparation, and with rotary cultivation, were close to nil, while the other soil preparation methods generally were more effective. Best seedling survival and establishment were obtained on seedbeds created by removing topsoil or by transposing it by deep ploughing or inversion. Application of peat litter to the seedbed promoted seedling establishment.

Аннотация: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of drainage on thermal conditions in peat soils. In addition, the study includes an examination of inter- and intraannual temperature variation at various depths in peat. The study material was collected during the period 1965-1973 from pine and spruce mire experimental plots laid out in the Vilpuula and Kivalo research areas of the Finnish Forest Research Institute. The water level in the ditches had been regulated to be 10, 30, 50 and 70 cm below soil surface. Peat temperature at five depths (5,10, 15, 20 and 40 cm) and the ground water level were recorded 1-5 times per week during the growing period

Аннотация: The settlement of peatland and road right-of-way can be estimated based on geotechnics. The modulus of compression and compression index measured by consolidation tests and the obtained values were tested against the observed settlement data from a literature survey. The regression coefficient between observed and calculated settlement was 0,84 when using only load factor (depth of ditches) as an independent variable and 0,92 when peat moisture content was included into the model. Compression index gave a little higher correlation coefficients, 0,92...0,94. It seems possible to develop simple settlement calculation methods for forest road planning and construction.

Аннотация: Tree nutrition and growth were studied while using apatite and rock phosphate as phosphorus, and phlogopite and potassium chloride as potassium sources for pine on peatlands. Different fertilizer materials were compared in the following combinations: rock phosphate+potassium chloride, apatite+phlogopite and rock phosphate+phlogopite. The study involved nine different experiments totalling 116 plots. Most of the sites were deficient in phosphorus and potassium. Peat nitrogen content ranged from low (0.9 %) to fairly high (2.6 %) concentrations. Apatite was a satisfactory phosphorus source for trees, but the effects on both needle phosphorus concentrations and tree growth were slower than with rock phosphate. The dealy of growth was 3-8 years. Phlogopite increased the peat total potassium contents slightly more than potassium chloride. Phlogopite raised needle potassium concentrations during the first 2-6 years after fertilization less than potassium chloride.

Аннотация: The effect of single and repeated fertilization on the nutrient status and stemwood growth of Scots pine on drained peatlands was investigated in the study. The magnitude of the growth increment obtained with single fertilization depended on the nitrogen content of the substrate. On nitrogen-poor peatlands (N content of the surface peat below 1.75 %) P- fertilization increased the volume growth of pine during the 7-year period by only 0.2-0.3 m3/ha/a. The effect of NPK was at its greatest 3-5 years after fertilization, and gave a measurable stand growth increase for about 10 years. The effect of fertilization was reflected in the needles as slightly elevated P and K concentrations.

Аннотация: The goals of the studies were the determination of the direction and the rate of vegetation changes going on forest wetland communities. The studies were carried out on hydrogenic sites in NE Poland, where the marches habitats are the most natural. The vegetation science survey included 251 releves which concerned 9 plant associations. The study presents the results of the research on peat deposits of four mires. The obtained results shows, that the main part of studied associations indicate the changes of species composition during the last 40 years. The changes are caused by the decrease of sites moisture which were conditioned of the global climate changes. It was explained by the analysis of an average species indicator values of soil moisture.
