Аннотация: In spite of increased attention to wetland conservation folowing the Ramsar Convention on wetland of International Importance, the peat-harvesting industry in many countries is still intersted in the further exploitation of peatlands. In some of the most industrialised countries, all natural peatlands have already been lost. In others, only small areas of native peatland remain. Among other possible uses for cut-over peatlands, peatland restoration is one: there is an urgent need for the development of measures for regenerating peat-accumulation processes. The redevelopment of a fen or bog peat landscape is a long-term process, which will probably take centuries. The restoration of any peatland may therefore be considered successful if the outcome is development and growth of plant communities able to produce peat.

Аннотация: In peatland forestry, fertilization is often needed to reach a good yield. Phosphorus and potassium are mainly used, but on nutrient poor fens and bogs nitrogen also has to be added. Аннотация: High floods in watercourses are of great interest, because of the potential hazards they pose to people and low-lying land near rivers. In many parts of the world, inundations are common and in northwest Europe there are high discharges almost every year, occasionally with serious consequences. In Sweden, such a major flood occurred in 1985, causing a damburst. Land use in the area was mainly forestry, and fairly extensive clear-felling and drainage were believed to have amplified high discharges following heavy rain. This led to investigation of the hydrological consequences of this forestry activities. Drainage was carried out both as new drainage of virgin peatlands, and as drainage of moist and wet mineral soils, i.e. remedial drainage of clear-felled areas. The investigations were made on small catchments and utiliesed the calibration period and control basin technique, using lenear regression ralations. Drainage of clear-felled areas partly led to reduced peak flows. A high grounwater level was an important prerequisite for increased discharges.

Аннотация: At the beginning of the investigation period the total biomass of the pine stands on the ordinary sedge pine mire was 48 tn/ha. The biomass of the mixed stands on the herbrich sedge pine mire was 91 tn/ha, out of which about 60% was from pine. The biomass of the spruce stands on the Vaccinium myrtillus spruce mire was 148 tn/ha. The average annual net increment of the stand biomass was 5.8 tn/ha in the unfertilized pine stands and 6.7 tn/ha in the NPK and micronutrient fertilized one during the six-year investigation period. The corresponding figures in the mixed stand were 7.2 tn/ha and 7.6 tn/ha The net increment of the biomass in the unfertilized spruce stand was 6.9 tn/ha and in the fertilized one 8.4 tn/ha. A considerable proportion of the net increment was lost to the ground as litter in all stands.

Аннотация: The fertilized stands accumulated more N,P,K and B than the unfertilized ones during the three-year study period. The increased accumulation corresponded to 35 % (52 kg/ha) of the N applied on the NPK fertilized plots, 10% (6 kg/ha) of the P, 25% (25 kg/ha) of the K and 10% (0.2 kg/ha) of the B on the PK and NPK fertilized plots. The increased amount of B released in litterfall after fertilization was equivalent to 4% of the applied B. Fertilization inhibited the uptake of Mn and Ca.

Аннотация: Four different afforestation experiments in the same peatland area within a distance of about 1,5 km were included. Soil and needle samples were taken from 116 plots altogether. The soil samples were taken from two depths: 0-10 cm (tilled layer) and 30-40 cm. Soil samples were analyzed for total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, B, Cu, NH4-N, NO3-N, pH and AAAc extractable P, K, and Ca. For the total nutrients the results were calculated per oven dry weight (mg/kg) and per area (kg/ha), and for AAAc extractable P, K, Ca per laboratory volume (mg/I) in addition. NH4-N and NO3-N were calculated only per laboratory volume (mg/1). The bulk density and organic matter content were also determined.

Аннотация: In Finland there are 9 mill. ha of peatlands classified as forestry land. About half of the peatlands have been drained for higher wood production. Of the total productive forest area - 20 mill. ha - peatland forests account for a quarter. The importance of peatland forests is increasing. The allowable cut in peatland forests has been increased from about 5 mill. m3 per annum to about 9 mill. m3/a through drainage and intensified silvicultural measures.

Аннотация: The three-parameter Weibull-function was fit by the maximum likelihood method to stem number- and basal area-dbh distributions in 329 drained peatland sample plot stands dominated by pine and birch. The material consists of a sub-sample of the plots of the 7th Finnish National Forest Inventory, altogether c. 600 permanent sample plots on peatlands in north Finland. Аннотация: The settlement of peatland and road right-of-way can be estimated based on geotechnics. The modulus of compression and compression index measured by consolidation tests and the obtained values were tested against the observed settlement data from a literature survey. The regression coefficient between observed and calculated settlement was 0,84 when using only load factor (depth of ditches) as an independent variable and 0,92 when peat moisture content was included into the model. Compression index gave a little higher correlation coefficients, 0,92...0,94. It seems possible to develop simple settlement calculation methods for forest road planning and construction.

Аннотация: Tree nutrition and growth were studied while using apatite and rock phosphate as phosphorus, and phlogopite and potassium chloride as potassium sources for pine on peatlands. Different fertilizer materials were compared in the following combinations: rock phosphate+potassium chloride, apatite+phlogopite and rock phosphate+phlogopite. The study involved nine different experiments totalling 116 plots. Most of the sites were deficient in phosphorus and potassium. Peat nitrogen content ranged from low (0.9 %) to fairly high (2.6 %) concentrations. Apatite was a satisfactory phosphorus source for trees, but the effects on both needle phosphorus concentrations and tree growth were slower than with rock phosphate. The dealy of growth was 3-8 years. Phlogopite increased the peat total potassium contents slightly more than potassium chloride. Phlogopite raised needle potassium concentrations during the first 2-6 years after fertilization less than potassium chloride.

Аннотация: The leaching of elements from artificial basins (drained in 1967) in Central Finland was studied. 4 basins were fertilized in 1987 before snowmelt, and 4 basins after snowmelt. 500 kg/ha of a commercial PK-fertilizer and 215 kg/ha of urea were applied. 8 basins were left unfertilized. Extremely high runoff water N-, P-, K-< Ca-, Mg-, Na-, S- and B-concentrations were observed during the snowmelt period. Except for nitrogen, considerable leaching occurred from the basins that were fertilized after snowmelt as well. The distinct decrease in runoff water pH as well as long-term leaching of phosphorus appear to be the most serious environmental effects of the fertilizations.
