Аннотация: Monitoring can be defined as the repeated measurement or sampling of pertinent data for comparison to a reference system or identified baseline. It always involves the determination of changes over time, usually interpreted against a baseline. Its ultimate value comes when the information that is collected, analyzed, and interpreted is used in making management and policy decisions. Currently, the Forest Service gathers data on the forest resource and forest pests in various ways. The data are collected from a permanent plot network, other off-detection plot surveys, and other data sources.

Аннотация: The organisms listed in this book include only those that are directly, or in a few instances indirectly, injurious to living trees. Species, such as many wood-boring insects, whose attacks are restricted to fallen trees have been exluded. Weed plants, unless they are at least in some measure parasitic, have also been omitted. Many of the included tree species are most commonly, but not invariably, treated as agricultural crops, and on the borderline the inclusion of some and the omission of others must necessarily be subjective; the principle of including too much rather than too little has been adopted.

Аннотация: In this report, pests consifered to be currently most significant in terms of their present or potential economic or environmental impact are described in detail under "Major Forest Insects and Diseases." Regional surveys of pest problems in special situations or of specific pests are summarized under "Special Surveys." The status of many other pests is presented in tabular form by region under title "Other Insects and Diseases.". This section has been expanded in 1983 and 1984 to reflect the importance of these pests. Although they do not, in most cases, have spectacular effects they are important because of their potential for expansion, quarantine considerations, and as vectors and indicators of other problems.

Аннотация: Forest entomology is that branch of the biological sciences which deals with insects in their relation to forests and forest products. The majority of species treated in this book have a direct effect either upon the trees themselves or upon the products derived from the trees. Some, however, have an indirect effect in that they are predaceous or parasitic and prey upon the tree pests. In addition to these two types there is a multitude of insects entering into the forest economy that are neither pests of trees nor parasitic or predatory enemies of those pests.
