When establising young plantations, certain courses are taken which in the future will have a susbstantial influence on the volume and quality production, on the total expenses and the forest rent as well as on stand safety. The type and the quality of stock and the spacing are of particular concern for the artificial regeneration of Norway spruce. By comparing informative results found in literature and in light of the institute's own research projects, this book endeavours to serve as a directive for forest planning and forestry practice

Аннотация: The report deals with a study of the old Norway spruce plantations ranging from 30 to 45 years in age and widely distributed in the Great Lake-St. Data were collected in 12 plantations from a total of 23 fifth-acre plots. All stands were planted during the 1914-1928 period and some of them have contributrd seed for the more recent establishment of some 1,000 acres of second generation plantations

larch -- variability -- hybridization -- distribution

Аннотация: There is a growing interest in Siberian larch species among researchers and practicioners from abroad, mainly due to their fast growth and excellent wood properties. Some attempts of introducing Siberian larch species as commercial plantations have already been initiated in western countries. However, the knowledge of botanical, ecological and silvicultural features of Siberian larch species is rather poor outside of Russia. Because of its economic importance for Russian forestry the Siberian larch species have been comprehensively studied for many years and many papers as well as a number of monographs have been published, most of them in Russian. The large Russian expertise concerning regionalisation of seed sources, seed crop and quality, seed orchards, seedling production in nurseries and silvicultural practices in commercial plantations beyond their range of natural distribution is presented in this report. May it support foreign foresters in their efforts to enlarge use of Siberian larch species.

Аннотация: The purpose of this study was to provide improved means for estimating the contents of plantation-grown red pine in Ontario. Few available volume data are directly applicable, since they are based on measurements made in stands with a different type of development-i.e., natural stands, or plantations in other regions where growth rates may differ appreciably. Further, volumes are not generally expressed in terms most conveniet for the current standards of utilization in these plantations.

Аннотация: Crown stem measurements were taken periodically on selected trees in plantations of red pine (PINUS RESINOSA AIT.) over the period 17 to 37 years from seed. Spacings were 5x5, 7x7, 10x10, and 14x14 feet; some of these represented the original planting interval and others had been achieved by mechanical thinning at the start of the experiment. Little mortality occurred during the 20 years, and individual crown size tended to stabilize, with smaller crowns occurring with closer spacings. Periodic volume growth per acre was strongly correlated with average foliage weight for the period. Thinning was followed by an immediate but temporary increase in foliage ranged from 0.023 to 0.038 cubic feet. Crown length, width, and weight, once stabilized, did not show good correlation with parameters of individual stem growth which are cumulative. Height to crown continued to increase and was strongly correlated with total volume per acre and with the ratio average height average spacing. Breast-height growth of sample trees appeared to be a function of height to crown and foliage weight.

Аннотация: This paper describes a long-term study of aboveground phytomass before and after the clearfelling of two Norway spruce stands. The clearfelled areas were treated in different ways:(1) slash was left in situ, as in conventional forestry; (2) slash was removed, as in whole-tree harvesting; and (3) controlled burning was carried out, as was common practice in northern Sweden about 40 Years ago. The phytomass of the field-layer vegetation was determined 1, 4. 10, and 16 years after clearfelling. The phytomass of the ground-layer vegetation was measured one and four years after clearfelling.

Аннотация: The book deals with the various aspects of nutrition of forest plantations at the basic and applied levels, to be necessary for two important reasons. First, the science and management of forest tree nutrition in its many aspects (spanning soil science, tree physiology and silviculture and ecology) has advanced rapidly over the last 15 years. It is no longer possible for any one worker to have expert knowledge in the full range of topics encompassed in tree nutrition. Yet many, if not most, of these topics are highly complementary. It is important that scientists, advanced students and forest managers seeking rewarding avenues of research and management in increasing plantation productivity, be well aware of concepts and recent developments in these related fields. It is essential that they address their studies and management decisions on a comprehensive background knowlwdge of all the processes which influence productivity. The second major reason relates to the need for increased forest productivity and importance of nutrient management of forest plantations in this.

Аннотация: According to the latest forest inventory in Germany the total area of Douglas-fir plantations is approximately 134.000 hectares. At present approxomately 80% of these stands are in the first and second age classes (less than 40 years old). Therefore the majority of the growing stock is composed of small sized timber. As a result of the present situation in the timber market the utilization of small sized Douglas-fir timber from thinned stands is problematic. The following conclusions are drawn. By planting Douglas-fir stands with 1800 to a maximum of 2500 trees per hectare it should be possible within the first thinning measure to reduce the amount of the small sized timber which is difficult to sell. The thinnings offer better possibilities of utilization and cosequently for sale because of their larger dimension, their high portion of heardwood and their more homogenous inner wood properties and also because of a higher portion of sawlog stem sections. With the recommended number of plants per hectare it should also be possible to grow stable stands for high value timber production.

Аннотация: The central importance of the components of urban horticulture - e.g. parks, lawns, tree plantations, flower beds, avenue trees, suburban productions, private gardens, roof gardens - for climatization, air quality, architectural planning and forming of city compartments, ecological networks and biodiversity in urban areas and, last not least, the well-being of urban dwellers has been already recognised. There are however, still many questions to be answered. The International Symposium on Plant Health in Urban Horticulture is meant to be a platform to discuss integrated methods and concepts of plant protection and plant care, to answer open questions and to create new scientific questions in order to approach the aim of a sustainable development in urban green areas.

Аннотация: Total amounts of plant nutrients in biomass, humus and mineral soil were determined in two old Norway spruce ecosystems in central and northern Sweden. Measurements were repeated 1, 4, 10 and 16 years after clearfelling on plots on which slash was retained, removed or burnt. Different analytical methods for plant-available nutrients were used and the relationship between them was calculated.

Аннотация: Data from 29 experimental plots in oak plantations are reported and have been utilized in constructing yield tables. The development of top height in indivudual experimental plots has been made the basis for deriving height development curves. In constructing the yield tables the increment per cent in basal area has been calculated by means of a function obtained from regression analysis of the emperical data. It has assumed that the development of top height follows the derived curves. Special account has been taken of the effect of undergrowth on the oak stands. The content of the fine soil fraction is of great interest. This factor, in combination with site index, has been tested as a variable and in the regression analysis. In all functions it proved to be powerful variable and led to greater precisions in the determination of the increment per cent in basal area. The tables show the average stand development for given site quality, here defined in terms of top height at an age of 100 years and content of the fine soil fraction, initial stand and thinning programme.
