Аннотация: This book is the first comprehensive, integrated synthesis of available information on current and potential effects of acidic precipitation on lakes and streams in different geographic regions. The full range of low-alkalinity aquatic resources is represented, including high-elevation lakes in Maine and the Adirondacks, streams in the Catskills and Appalachian Mountains, a.o. The book examins the current status of water chemistry and characterizes the processes controlling water chemistry on a regional bases by using and comparing high-quality data sets. Methods for assessing long-term changes in water chemistry and their effects on fish and other biota are critically evaluated. The book demonstrates the substatial diversity among geographical regions with respect to the nature of surface waters and the complexity of their response to acidic deposition. This volume will be of great interest to researchers in limnology, equatic ecology, environmental chemistry, and hydrology. It will also serve as an important reference for environmental managers and policy makers.

Аннотация: Acid rain is a serious international environmental problem. Scandinavian forests are influenced by acidic precipitation and have been the focus of considerable research on the causes and impacts of atmospheric pollution. This book presents the results of long-term studies (1972-1990) on acid rain in Norwegian forests. This research examined soil chemistry and biology, the impacts of acid rain on tree growth and nutrition, and its influence on ground vegetation, fungi, soil animals, and germination and seeding development and it will be of interest to researchers, and advanced students in ecology, air pollution, forestry, and environmental chemistry as well as to decision makers on environmental issues.

Аннотация: The forest ecosystems of the southern United States are the region's predominant and use and comprise vital resources of economic and biological significance. These forests, covering 85 million hectares, or 40% of the land area, are subject to numerous physical and chemical strssors. Temperature, precipitation, and soil nutrients are three factors that currently limit forest ecosystem health and productivity in the region. In a changing global environment, these forest ecosystems face an unprecedented rate of change and will be directly and indirectly affected by additional stresses from air pollutants and climate change, including increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, other trace gases and atmospheric aerosols, and altered land use patterns.

Effect of rainfall on stream flow in Southeast Alaska

Аннотация: Waterflow patterns of Southeast Alaska salmon streams are characterized by marked fluctuation in flow and recurring fall floods. A low stage in the dead of winter while precipitation is stored as snow, a considerable spring run-off that is quite stable until the snow is dissipated, and summer and fall flows fluctuating with rainfall seems to be the typical pattern. Extreme low water follows rainless periods in summer. On streams having no lakes to exert a stabilizing influence, the sustained heavy rainfalls of autumn cause violent floods.

climatic data, precipitation

Аннотация: This paper provides a water-balance sheet for the University of Toronto forest in Haliburton County, Ontario, calculated from climatic data. It presents computations of the average monthly water balance of the area, the monthly values for the 1952-57 period, and daily values for a selected six-month period in 1957, based on a selected soil. Moisture conditions in a second, drier soil are considered in the daily computatiions, which required the development of a modified computation method. The methods and results are discussed and compared. Streamflow figers actually measured for the Black River, in which watershed part of the forest lies, and snow-pack figures from the Gull River watershed are compared with computed figures as a check on the validity of the water-balance computations.

methods, climate, results

Аннотация: The available observations upon the behavior of streams in USA and abroad have established the following facts: 1.The total discharge of large rivers depends upon climate, precipitation, and evaporation. 2. The regularity of flow of rivers and streams throughout the year depends upon the storage capacity of the watershed, which feeds the stored water to the streams during the summer through underground seepage and by springs. In winter the rivers are fed directly by precipitation, which reaches them chiefly as surface run-off. 3. The forests play an important part, especially on impermeable soils, of forest cover on the watersheds.4. Floods which are produced by exceptional meteorological conditions can not be prevented by forests, but without their mitigating influence the floods are more servere and destructive

Аннотация: A method is described for the precipitation of unhydrolyzed RNA after RNase digestion that avoids the use of strong acids and is extremely sensitive for enzyme assay. The dilution step usually required for spectrophotometric measurements of supernatant fractions after separation from unhydrolyzed RNA is eliminated. The precipitating reagent is buffered lanthanum-magnesium-ethanol added in 10-fold volume to enzyme incubation mixtures. In the macroassay, an increase in absorbancy of 0.41 is obtained with 1 m g bovine pancreatic RNase after 15 min incubation at 37 C. For micromethods, the ethanol can be replaced by Cellosolve (2-ethoxyethanol) and sensitivity increased 5- to 10-fold

Аннотация: The background of this study was the continuous depopulation of the Swedish countryside which has involved an increased number of closures of smallholdings and farms on inferior land. Surveys have shown that between 0.5 and one million hectares of land used for agricultural production may go out of use. At present each year sees the conversion of approx. 20,000 hectares of arable land into forest in Sweden. One can calculate that if approx. 0.5 million hectares of arable land is turned into productive forest land the value of the yield of Swedish forestry will increase by approx. ten per cent provided that such plantings yield the expected result

Аннотация: Inventories of the cone crop in the vicinity of meteorological stations in southern Sweden were made in the years 1973-1975. Correlations between cone crop and the following variables for the year of flower primordia initiation-cone crop, some temperature variables and precipitation- were studied briefly. The investigation revealed that high temperature during the middle or end of June provokes increased flowering, on the condition that the cone crop during year of flower primordia initiation is scanty. High precipitation during June may have a negative effect on the flowering.

Аннотация: The book deals with site characteristics and stand structure of a temperate rain forest in the mountain ranges on the Chilean coast. This rare forest type has a high percentantage of edemic species which are endangered by exploitation and expansion of forest plantations. The research was carried between 2000- and 2001 in the state protected area "Reserva National Valdivia" in the X Region of Chile "Los Lagos". The recording of vegetation and stand structure was carried out in two secondary forest stands each being made up of differernt species. So that the site could be characterised air temperature, precepitation in and outside the stand and fog precipitation were measured. Nutrient and water regimes in the soil were also recorded. Finally erosion was studied in the natural forest and on a clear cut area of pine plantations bordering the forest area.

rain and rainfall -- forest ecology -- climatic changes

Аннотация: This volume synthesizes mechanisms of forest ecosystem response to changing hydrologic budgets associated with climatic change drivers. The authors explain the implications of change at both the plant and stand levels and they extrapolate the data to ecosystem-level responses, such as changes in nutrient cycling, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. In analyzing data, they also discuss similarities and differences with other temperate deciduous forests.
