Аннотация: The general aim of the study was to determine how timber truck transport business succeeds in the competition within a sector. Particular attention was paid to the structure of the sector, and the effect it has on profitability in the sector. Furthermore, atrategic groups were looked at in depth, as well as the competitive strategy was operationalized. A total of 53 timber truck transport entrepreneurs were interviewed. The average age of the etrepreneurs was 51 years. Of the businesses, 35% were partnership companies, 6% were open companies and 59% were self-employed. Cluster analysis, using Ward's method, was used for seeking out strategic groups. The length of the customer relationships proved a significant barrier to motality. The most successful businesses used the competitive strategy of cost weighted focussing. This was done through optimization of the capasity utilization rate and through choice of correct customers. The strategic position for the most successful businesses was judged to be good in the future. Success in the future will require above all activeness and innovation ability.

Аннотация: The profitability of fast-growing trees was investigated in the northeastern and eastern provinces of Thailand. The financial, economic, and tentative environmental-economic profitability was determined separately for three fast-growing plantation tree species and for three categories of plantation managers: the private industry, the state (The Royal Forest Department) and the farmers. Fast-growing tree crops were also compared with teak, a traditional medium or long rotation species, and Para rubber which presently is the most common cultivated tree in Thailand.

The theoretical foundations are examined on the basis of interest theory and by applying the results of accounting principles and practice. Problems encountered in the preparation final accounts, such as the treatment of inventories and fixed assets, are solved by assuming a forestry enterprise to be a business engaged in productive activities.

Аннотация: The aim of the present study was to make financially optimal thinning models for Scots pine and Norway spruce stands. The main objective of the forest management was assumed to be the net present value of the future revenues from a forest stand at three and five per cent interest rates. Calculations concerned solely thinnings from below. In order to distinguish regional differences, thinning models were made separately for four sub-regions in southern Finland.

Аннотация: The aim of this atudy is to analyze the profitability of thinnings at the forest holding level. Analysis is carried out using MELA-software with the following thinning treatments: 1) thinning models of Forestry Center Tapio, 2) no thinnings, 3) postponement of the first thinning to the mean height of 13 m (following thinnings according to Tapio's thinning models), 4) thinning models based on interest rates of three % and 5) five %.

Аннотация: A break-even technique based on the net present value is used to determine the stand characteristics of understocked pine and spruce stands profitable to grow. The Finnish Private Forests Act prohibits from leaving forest land idle after clear cutting, and so the problem of further growing of a understocked stand is similar to the optimal replacement of an old machine. Dynamic programming is applied to choose the best treatment alternatives for different initial stands.

Аннотация: Thinning models based on profitability calculations by three and five per cent proved to be economically better than the thinning models of Tapio when measured by the net incomes and logging cost. Also, just postponement of the first thinning due to the Tapio's models led to considerably better results than the Tapio's models. Results were parallel to those at the stand and forest holding level.

Аннотация: The purpose of the study was to determine the competitive strategies of the most successful forest machine contractors. Porter's strategy of focus was applied in the study. Forest contracting businesses were assumed to have three alternative focus strategies, of which two, customer focus and geographic focus were operationalized and measured. The success of the businesses was measured by financial results and strategic position.

The aim was to determine the private profitability of a single and repeated fertilization separately. The data (site and stand parameters) was collected from 8 fertilization experiments established during the 1960's and 1970's in northern Ostrobothnia.
